^They are not all rich... People will often save their money for maybe months to just buy one piece from a luxury label.

And yes, Japan has SOOOO many shops and many which sell a particular style of clothing. There are many different kinds of fashion in Japan, like gothic lolita, decora, cyber, etc. and shops cater to these styles. There is a lot of variety.
And like in any other country, there are still people who like to make their own things. Of course

damn, I can't understand where do they get all these clothes.
I was in NY city and only stores that had wearable but still affordable clothes were H&M, Abercrombie&Fitch... I mean I coulnd't even find TopShop, so how come do Japanese have so many shops and different clothes? .. are they all so rich that they can afford designer clothes, or do they all make their own clothes?

Oh I know..they have so much layering/details..I'd never be able to 'afford' having such style!

Another thing to remember is that the younger kids who are still in school wear uniforms everyday, so it's not like their entire wardrobe is designer.

Personally, I think that's what motivates some of the more creatively dressed people there - years of uniforms! Weekends are amazing for people watching in Tokyo for the same reason, the freedom of not having to wear work or school clothes.

Probably you might get a better response on the shopping section of this forum. As for japanese style clothes, there are alot of stores in Chinatown that stock them. They're cute but sometimes not too interesting, the interesting shops cost too much. Like $200 for a print tee.

You can try high fashion stores in paddington or double bay. They stock japanese designers, but prepare to pay alot. All in all, it might be better off to buy stuff from Yahoo Auctions JP or various online shopping malls there.

Tokyobaby what kind of Japanese style are you looking for? There are many kinds. You don't have to go to Japan to get them. In fact, I've seen a lot of photos of people in Finland that dress this same way (it's Japanese-inspired). It's all about mixing and matching different pieces together.
You can get interesting clothing on Ebay sometimes. Handcraft is also big in Japan. A lot of these girls make their own clothing or accessories. There are tons of really good Japanese books on crafts on Ebay (like on pendants, dresses, kanzashi, etc.). You just have to know what you want.

I can list some Japanese brands if you want. But they are mostly for "gothic" and "lolita" fashion. I think you can order from online sometimes. Some, of course, are expensive, like $300 for a dress (although it's good-quality and there's quite a lot of work on it. It's funny; I've had Japanese students tell me how awful the fabric quality is in the clothing over here, and they let me feel their clothing. Yes, big difference!! Very comfortable and soft. But at the I was then, I didn't bother to check what the clothing was made of... ). My friend sometimes buys these through auction.yahoo.co.jp. She can read/speak Japanese...

I was not too keen on gothic or lolita, but more OL style...whatever they call it. they have really neat but trendy styles . Something classy, and not
the typical t-shirt and beach sandal style.
Also never know finland fashion was similar either. better check there fashion too!

Oh I'd love to see this style! I hope you post some pictures.
I think it might look like "school" style, which many Japanese women to whom I've spoken with tell me that they like to wear. It's usually nice white collared shirts, skirts... and the colours are often brown and white, black and white, etc. It looks pretty formal.
