i know a lot of people have toned down that *kawaii*desu look in japan nowadays. more girls are following american trends. and i think that the ganguro (black face, white lips & eyes, 5inch platforms etc..) era has died out.

That's so true, the majority of young girls are following the mainstream American celebrity style now.

I find that girls often make more things on their own.

I think so too, aizawa. Most of my Japanese friends that are visiting here follow western trends. A lot of them seem to be influenced by the music scene, especially hip hop... Hip Hop seems to be so big everywhere these days.

it's not sad and it's not new...
Japan, and most of the east, and most of the world, is following american fashion.
But As we see, they all put their very personal touch on what ever trend they are following.
I'd also like to say. French 60's psychedelic is Very big in Japan. Or has been for the last 6 years. As well as many other trends. Not all directly from America. I'm always so suprised with what they come up with. And I've got to tell you. The bend that they have on current American fashion, is actualy really fun. strange, cute, sexy.. etc. Imagine that.

I'm not so keen on the hiphop look. It's sort of boring.

I must say, going to the Harajuku area armed with a camera would be heavenly to me. I love the over the top, colorful, piled on accessory look. Creative and unique, and nothing like what we have here in the states. You'd probably be arrested for indecent accessorizing if you wore some of things they do!

They have been doing this long before Mary-Kate set the trend in the States(though MK did that really well XD)
