John Galliano - Designer

Please tell me that the Carhartt piece(s) also say "Sacai" on the inside label.

Anyways, back to Galliano.

People online really seem to hate this venture w/ Zara, and I can't help but ask, "Why?" (Not like I bothered to read much into this.) To me, this sounds like a temp-job....just something to keep him occupied for the time being, and still bring in some cash. So I say "More power to him" if this if what he's doing next. This isn't the end of his world, I hope.
No unfortunately. It’s regular Carhartt WIP from the men’s side.
I only have 1 item from the Sacai collection from the very 1st one, a knitted ice blue chore jacket.

I think sometimes, with the reactions, there’s a kind of reverse classicism.
You would see that most people criticizing it online are wearing fast fashion too.
And the reactions are always so dramatic: RIP GALLIANO! Fashion is dead!

They actually don’t realize how much it’s almost surreal that such a big brand actually offers the center stage to Galliano after everything that happened.

I mean three years ago, the idea of a Met Gala about him was met with a bit of caution.

Now his work will be available everywhere and he is back in the mainstream conversation. It’s a miracle in itself.

And I’m sure people will buy it. 2 years contract with 2 collections a year? Come on! They won’t pass that!

just cannot wait to see how he translates his vision for a brand like zara. or if he will even change it for the massess or do his usual offerings.

Yikes. Seeing Billy Caravan get signed to Zara is a sign that John’s career is beyond over.

I mean it makes sense. The only people into Galliano are like 20 something’s buying it second hand. They wear the worst stuff too like I saw one in this hideous embroidered denim bag that I remember when it came out 20 years out it was considered hideous and didnt sell at all. That’s probably why that person I saw with it was able to find a mint one. Nobody ever carried it at full price be bc it wasn’t worth it. It just bounced around clearance centers wrapped in plastic until ended up on Mercado.

Overall the Galliano customer has no money and no taste since they buy whatever Dior with no concern for if it’s attractive or important. Very fashion victim which ironically has always been John’s problem.

When you see what his work in the early 00’s and what he did at his own brand at a certain time, he can do Zara with eyes closed.

The surprise will be which elements of his aesthetic he will tap into. He can go from trash to chic, from very grown up to juvenile or in the vain of his last collection for Margiela (which they never capitalized from).

Seeing Glenn Martens at MMM now makes sense why OTB moved on from John. Martens is doing next generation John.

Between Blazy and Martens: John should be proud his children - who are clearly influenced by him - are at the top of fashion.

if margiela was smart they should have hurriedly made a formula for that glass skin make up.

Unfortunately i dont see whats new gen about the new margiela. Its very dusty, unwearable and doesn't know if its gonna be avant-garde or rtw. its like project runway version of collections by mcqueen, galliano, muglier etc. Im more excited about galliano's Zara.

I mean I just saw a rapper in a Dior Golf collection piece which was John’s biggest flop at Dior and probably is what drove the brand to switch looks to his final look at Dior.

Dior Golf had Dior's first women’s sneaker and it was a huge flop because it was hideous.

The golf collection was in 2004 for the pre-summer season.
What prompted the changes was actually the FW2004 collection and later the cannibalisation of the J’adore Dior stuff in stores. Too much fakes, too much accessibility.
Galliano switching was more a creative/legacy decision than a commercial one.

If one thing, Dior was in constant growth during Galliano’s era. Even during the crisis in 2008.

i'm almost certain there will be a bias flou slip dress component, very strong tailoring and knitwear sections, newspaper print pieces, maybe some y2k denim and jersey stuff and some cool shoes; all the signature components of jg's style that are most likely to sell well.

it would be nice to see all those categories really fleshed out with thoughtful merchandising and not too much "filler".

I am looking forward to getting fashion from him in almost any capacity. I have no issue with it being from Zara at this point. I'm of the mind that in this current era of fashion - what real difference is there between Zara and any of the big "luxury" brands anyway? If there is any difference, it's really only lingering perception. In regard to quality of product, integrity of design, process of sourcing and manufacturing, etc. it's all basically the same. You can't tell me the $2000 t-shirt is "better" than the $40 one. Go John!
