Behind the Seams: Kate Moss for TopShop for Barneys
As you've been reminded, the Kate Moss for TopShop collection hit Barneys New York this morning. Accordingly, our intrepid fashion novice, Bess Levin, made an early morning stop at the store to see about the fuss...
Though I’m not a fan of getting out of bed in the morning, when there’s a promise of the Kate Moss for Top Shop (for Barneys), I can be known to make sacrifices. The early rising thing was also helped by the fact that my apartment much closer to the flagship store than the office, which has always been more of a curse—“look at it, there it is, just stop by, you have time”—but today served me well.
I arrived around quarter to ten, thinking I’d be one of the first few people online, but I’d underestimated Ms. Moss’s star power in America (and several coordinates above Houston and Lafayette). While I waited for the doors to open with 90 of my newest friends, I noticed the window displays:
Each had a model in an outfit from the line, wearing Kate Moss masks. Cool or creepy?
Inside—on 7, for those of you making the trip today— Kate’s picture was plastered all over the walls.
There was a dash for dresses—the black one in particular, because it’s the best made—and the gold studded tee (literally, every girl had one in her hand). I’d considered the basic tank, but couldn’t justify it at $55. Hello, Forever 21. The black vests were grabbed immediately; a huge hit. But the big question of the day was the floral dress—cute or wrong?
One girl said she was underwhelmed by the offering, but "I saw the line in
English Bazaar," she said. "They made it look so good!"
When I left at 11, there were tons of girls and the pile was dwindling. Several staffers told me the morning was a definite success, and we agree.
But what about the other Barney's? Could you get the line in Chelsea, in Florida, in Los Angeles? Let us know!

when i saw the photos from today of the models in the window with the Kate masks on, my first reaction was that it was a little bit bizarre.
