Gosh....all this talk about mumbo jumbo asian/caucasian is really riling me up.......but I don't really wanna respond for fear of leading this thread off-topic. (which it already has!)
So let's discuss those hideous hair extensions that I've seen her sporting. Not a good look.
Some of the stuff she wears is cute...nothing ground breaking but better than the average joe.

I think in Asia, most people want to emulate caucasians. That's why everyone wants to have white milky skin and that's why brands like Anna Sui have a whitening cream range that is only available in Asia and not abroad. Same with L'oreal. Basically, there is a general consensus in Asia that Asian girls are not as pretty as their caucasian counterparts which is why you may hear people say "So so is pretty....... for an Asian". Based on this, to criticize an Asian actress in comparison to caucasian actresses means that even a pretty Asian actress would be deemed hideous.

That's why I think people tend to compare Asians to their own race. Another thing is, with most Asian actresses who make it "big" in Hollywood like Gong Li, Bai Ling, Michelle Yeo, Zhang Ziyi, they develop this horrible attitude where they think they're really hot sh*t because they're Asian and from China or wherever and still made it big. You have to remember Hollywood may seem like a big deal in America/Europe but it's an even bigger deal in Asia. A lot of people look up to caucasians in HK. So many local girls here want to go out with expat boyfriends. I'm not really sure why either but my cousin is local here and she absolutely dotes on Caucasian males. For some reason, she thinks ALL caucasian males are attractive even though some are really quite hideous. I think it's a cultural thing. I don't think Lucy Liu is like that though. Maybe cause she grew up in America. But I read an interview with Katie Leung somewhere and she already sounded a bit stuck up. I know she grew up in Scotland.. but still.

Anyway the point is, causians and asians have different standards of beauty and like I said, it's probably a cultural thing which may be sad, but it's the truth!

just to let you know, whitening cosmetic line is not to whiten your skin or make you look "white" like the caucasian skin. what you are saying about whitening cosmetic lines is a misconception. my friend is a dermatologist and she explained to me that asian skin is prone to sun spots, or brown spots, as you approach your 30s. whitening cream is to help prevent those sun/brown spots from getting bigger or preventing them altogether, not to change the color or your skin.

Yes beauty does come in all shapes and sizes and forms but you also have to remember that this is a form where people talk about how ugly people are all the time. Fashion and modeling and celebrities are all about shallowness and judging people from their appearence. In fact, I remember reading someone post somewhere that "skinny is always better" which technically can be prejudice against those who are bigger. Yet no one brought her/him up on that comment despite the fact that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Also, someone's race is just appearence. It doesn't make who they are as a person so if I don't find Asians physically attractive, what's wrong with that? Isn't that the same as how some men don't find women who are a size 20 attractive? I agree that beauty comes within different races and cultures but I don't really understand why what I said in the first place is so controversial. Also for the record, I am very proud of my race. I'm proud of being Chinese but I'm not proud of being Chinese cause of the way we look. That's just silly. I'm proud to be Chinese for other reasons.

okay I better understand what you were trying to say. I didnt say you had to solely like your races appearance it just seemed like you completely wrote off your race as unattractive which seems... odd (for lack of a better word) to me. But, the ladies are right we should stay on topic so back to katie's fashion.

I really like this girl's sense of style. And I'm feeling her NYC premiere outfit, I just wish she would've worn heels... Anyway, I think she's gorg and I cannot wait to see HP! One more day baby, one more day.

I think that the reason why people, especially fellow asians, are so critical of other asians is because of the limited roles for asians. With so little roles out there, it seems that only the "cream of the crop" should fill them. Therefore, there is this feeling that the prettiest, skinniest, etc. etc. female asian actresses should be the ones who succeed.

Good point. But this also has the effect of keeping roles limited. I think if there were more support, more "let's go support this movie because an Asian has a prominent role in it," Hollywood would be more open to opening the door a little wider.

it's not a common fact. i don't know a single asian girl who does that.
can you provide proof or an article regarding your claim? would love to read up on it.

Skin bleaching is found in Asia where there is still a preference for pale skin, but definitely not among Asian-Americans. Tanning is super common in the USA, after all...in fact, a lot of Asian-Americans get tan and don't avoid the sun, especially since going to the beach/pool and lying out is a social thing in the US, same thing with outdoor sports.

Also, even if there are limited roles why should the prettiest girls win them? Are we really that shallow? Call me crazy, but I still like to see movies where the best actors or the most charismatic actors act! Anyway, how the heck do we define who the prettiest is? People disagree hugely on standards of beauty, as we've seen here. Just because you think someone is unattractive doesn't mean that other people don't find them attractive and deserving of the role.

Also, as someone else said, maybe people should be more supportive and make it so that there's more roles.

Anyway...Those blonde hair extensions are awful!! If I was katie, i wouldnt have allowed them to put them in for me! The Dior look a like dress is not flattering either...maybe the real Dior jumper dress would have been miles better!

I have to admit when I saw that first pic of her in the denim, I didnt think she looked that pretty but shes cuter with beautiful hair and make up.

Yeah, I really think this thread should go back to Katie but I can't help it cause people keep quoting me and I really feel I should respond! So for the person who wanted to know more about bleaching... there is an article here. It also talks about how surgery is often done to "correct certain characteristics which stray from the European-based ideal of a small, straight nose, straight soft hair, big eyes (preferably blue) and fair-skin." which reiterates what I said earlier about how most Asians want to emulate Western features. Again, this is a cultural thing which I think no matter how hard Westerners try, they will never understand because they just weren't brought up that way. The Guardian also wrote an article here about how this one girl who wanted lighter skin almost died from using toxic skin bleach. So yes, it is quite a common fact within Asian communities that Asians bleach their skin.

Also I never said other people couldn't find Katie pretty. I was just stating my opinion about her being unattractive to me. I really think people should re-read the post I made earlier about how saying she's unattractive to me because she has really chinese features is no different to someone saying someone is unattractive cause she's fat.

Okay that's all I have to say. I suggest if people have other issues with my comments, they should just PM me and leave this thread to talk about Katie herself and not my opinions.
