Keira Knightley takes the plunge for WaterAid

Hollywood star Keira Knightley literally took the plunge for WaterAid just before Christmas to pose underwater for WaterAid and fashion photographer Candice. "Everyone deserves to have clean water and not worry about catching a disease every time they drink it," Keira explained. "It's a basic human requirement and if you can do anything to help with that aim, then you should."
The pictures of Keira are the first in a series of celebrities that will be used to promote and raise money for WaterAid. This first shoot resulted in a spread in the UK newspaper the Sun which generated around £20,000 for our work.
Keira, who gave up hours of her weekend in between trips to the Caribbean where she is starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean parts II and III, also took the time to model the Wright and Teague jewellery set that will be raising money for WaterAid in March. She also committed herself both to visiting our projects and persuading fellow actor Orlando Bloom to pose for a similar picture.
The photograph was taken at the Pinewood studios in a huge tank containing around a million gallons of water (used in the James Bond and Harry Potter movies). The photos were taken four metres down and while oxygen tanks were required to work continuously at this depth, Keira had to spend around a minute at a time without air as the shots were taken. The whole process has also been captured on film by Andy Mathews of Sanctuary Post who are producing a documentary about the photography project.
The final pictures were stunning and the Sun journalist, who has a London marathon place, has now agreed to run for WaterAid as well. Plans are already afoot for the next pictures and a celebrity field visit for the documentary, hopefully including Keira. But all in all it was a splashing success.
