Lanvin, Soup to Nuts
By Cathy Horyn
In between packing my party dresses for couture — isn’t that a hoot? — I stopped by to see Alber Elbaz’s early spring clothes for Lanvin. You can never be too early in fashion these days. Elbaz has been broadening Lanvin’s concept, thinking more along the lines of a supermarket spree, something here, something there, and has come out with pajamas (Carole Lombardish), prêt-à-porter wedding dresses (throw on and go to the alter or justice of the peace), T-shirts, travel clothes and mainstay looks that will remain in stock. I especially loved a creamy white shirtdress in double-layered silk inspired by a man’s dress shirt, with a triple-layer navy chiffon minicoat. A super-simple dress made from two asymmetrical squares of black silk showed how Elbaz is such a pragmatic innovator. His other accomplishment is to bring clear design integrity to shapes that appear simple, in fabrics like polyester (yes!), washed silk and organdy, so that the clothes are hard to copy.
