Gossip Girl sweetheart Leighton Meester was born in jail, reports Star.

Leighton, now 22, was born while her mother was serving a federal prison sentence in Texas. The mom was allowed to stay in a halfway house for the birth, but had to return to prison on the day Leighton turned three months. The future star was raised by a relative while mom served out her sentence for her role in a major drug-running ring.

According to the mag, Leighton’s father, grandfather and aunt all did hard time in federal prisons for drug dealing.

I just read this a couple of minutes ago too. I wonder if it's true. It's hard to say, but as Star Magazine is reporting it I have some doubt.

It's not hard to verify, those records are public so...I'm sure it just opened the door to more tabs to hunt for juice on the Meesters. Leighton must be thrilled...

I read an article that said it was false. Anyway, Star Magazine has crappy writers/editors - they say she was born in jail, but then state her mom went to a halfway house to give birth. They need to proofread next time.

this doesn't change my opinion of Leighton in any way- i mean how can one help the situation they were born into? The mistakes of her family have nothing to do with her- and it's even more admirable that she made a success of herself and has gotten so far given her difficult surroundings...

honestly those reporters have got no class- Leighton's never drawn attention to her private live and has always remained low key...she certainly doesn't deserve to have her past and her mother's mistakes -not hers; to be scrutinised in this way...

i just feel abit sad that the media is so intrusive and so hungry for a good story they'll quite happily try to destroy a fledgling career and (from the tone of that article) feel so self congratulatory about it... :(

Excellent post ponytrot, I couldnt have said it better!!

For one, it is Star Magazine. But to follow that, Leighton turned out pretty damn well whatever problems her family had. She is still a great actress, and has never drawn attention to her private life.

Where you give birth has nothing to do with your character lol.

It's an interesting bit to include in a story I guess..just because it's a bit unusual or at least not common...

As we all know and has already been said, It's not where you start, It's where you end up that matters.

We don't get gossip girl :( so I don't know her.
But when I saw the story on Perez I was kinda impressed. You always read interviews where stars waffle on about their family troubles, being 'working class' etc. (even though many are just talking trash so people will go "wow they really had it tough and had to overcome such adversity")
Then here's is a girl who really could use that sympathy card up but chooses not to.

I don't care if it's true or not. If it is then it's still not the public's business. And if not, then it's just another rumour like Chace and Ed being lovers.

It really just adds to the intrigue around her and insures that Blake's mug won't be the only one gracing a variety of magazine covers promoting GG. Cause she's so interesting...:innocent:

It´s so vulgar and vile to publish this kind of things. What if she was born in prison? It is still something that has nothing to do with her career and the kind of thing a decent editor would refrain from publishing. But it´s The Star, they would sell their mothers if they could...

Oh Snap...

Doesn't matter if she was born in prison. It's not her fault. Past is past. What's important is that she's doing so well now.

I hope this won't bother Leighton. Tabloids suck.

I don't think it's meant to offend or suggest there is something wrong with her. Rather it's a great story for "journalists" to get audiences to pity her and sell copy. Even if someone were to think less of her it's pretty obvious no-one would pay attention since she has become a huge success.

I have no problem with these kinds of stories becoming mainstream about celebs/public figures just b/c I think it shows that they are just like everyone else and it gives hope (i.e. just because you weren't born into a certain socioeconomic bracket doesn't mean you're not capable)
