The lowdown on Lohan
Teen star says it's time to get serious
By LOUIS B. HOBSON
HOLLYWOOD -- What a difference a year makes.
Last year Lindsay Lohan hit the press circuit to promote her comedy Mean Girls.
She was a bubbly, full-figured beauty with flaming red hair who was looking forward to turning 18.
She was prompt, wide-eyed and enthusiastic.
This year when Lohan arrived two hours late for her interviews for Herbie: Fully Loaded she was noticeably thinner, blond and exhausted, having played host at one of her famous celebrity parties the night before.
It was in honor of being named best female performer for Mean Girls at this years MTV Movie Awards.
In the 12 months between Mean Girls and Herbie: Fully Loaded, Lohan has graced the covers of more magazines than any of her contemporaries.
The gossip magazines have scrutinized her weight loss, image change, her string of boyfriends and her regular appearances at nightclubs in New York and Los Angeles.
"It's been a learning experience. That's for sure. I call that period of my life my club year but I've put that behind me. I'm ready to pour all my energies into my career instead of my social life," says Lohan.
"I don't want to be known as a diva who is late to the set and parties all the time.
"I want people in the industry to know I am a serious actress."
As far as her image overhaul is concerned, Lohan hints she is trying to channel '50s sexpot Marilyn Monroe.
"I have pictures of Marilyn everywhere. I used to study her by watching her films. I think she is one of the most incredible actresses.
"Hilary Clinton told me I looked like Marilyn."
Lohan recently attended an auction for Monroe memorabilia, where she was approached by a woman who had known the silver-screen siren.
"I had dressed in an outfit I thought Marilyn would have worn to such an event.
"Marilyn's friend told me when I walked in the room she got goosebumps. It was like seeing Marilyn."
Lohan insists she hasn't discarded her adoration for her other screen icon, Ann-Margret.
"I still worship Ann-Margret. She is so sexy. It's my dream to be able to remake her movie Kitten With a Whip. If I could remake some of Marilyn's movies, I'd start with Niagara."
Lohan is something of the queen of remakes at Disney.
In 1998, she played identical twins in Disney's remake of its 1961 family classic that had starred Hayley Mills.
Made for less than $20 million US, Lohan's Parent Trap grossed $93 million worldwide and an additional $60 million on DVD.
It was enough of a profit for Disney to offer Lohan the remake of its 1976 Jodie Foster body-switching comedy Freaky Friday.
With this one, Lohan and Disney hit gold.
The $20-million investment yielded $160 million worldwide and more than $100 million on DVD.
Now the House of Mouse and Lohan have teamed up for a modern version of Disney's Love Bug movies.
"Disney gave me my opportunity to go from TV to feature films," says Lohan, who started out playing Ali Fowler on Another World.
"They've been good to me, and I feel safe with them. If they have another project they think I'm good for, of course I'll consider it."
That won't likely be any time soon.
Lohan has just completed the romantic comedy Just My Luck, in which her wealthy socialite changes fortunes with a homeless man played by Chris Pine.
She is playing Meryl Streep's daughter in the Robert Altman ensemble comedy A Prairie Home Companion and is in negotiations to headline the revenge comedy Fashionistas and plans to team with singer/actor Nick Cannon for a romantic comedy.
NOT IN MI-3
The one project she isn't attached to is Tom Cruise's MI-3.
"I read I was in training for Mission Impossible and injured my ankle but I've never even talked to anyone about the film.
'There is so much nonsense written about me that I have to keep a sense of humour about it."
In 2002, Lohan signed a five-album production deal with Estefan Enterprises.
She released her debut album, Rumors, last year.
"I'm so excited about my debut album that I want to record a second one as soon as possible."
Lohan readily admits her life "is overwhelming right now. I don't know how to relax. Career-wise I want to do it all."
In the fall of 2004 when she was filming Herbie: Fully Loaded, Lohan was rushed to the hospital suffering from exhaustion.
"I didn't pace myself properly. I was filming all day long and then working on my album at night. I won't ever do that again.
Since she broke up with That 70's Show star Wilmer Valderrama, Lohan has not been in a serious relationship.
"My work comes first. It would be unfair to a guy."
She adds being a swinging single "is not as devastating for me as it seems to be for other people who are determined to create a serious relationship for me with every man I'm seen talking to."
It only seems there's nothing left for Lohan to do, but she points out she'd like to "start a charity for children and begin my own production company.
"First, though, I have to get my wisdom teeth out."
