Lupita Nyong'o

I am not suggesting that she doesn't have the right to do whatever she wants with her own hair, which of course she does. I am saying that IMO straightening her hair would not be a good style strategy for a variety of reasons. And also that I'm irked by the many suggestions I see here on tFS that seem to want to press celebrities toward the norm, most particularly when their whole claim to fame is existing beautifully outside the norm.

Exactly. And while I'm sure it was meant without malice, there are a lot of cultural and societal implications to take into consideration when suggesting a black girl straighten her hair. She's proven that her natural hair is versatile already...not to mention, straightening black hair often comes with unhealthy consequences so I think it's just good to be conscious.

As much as I love Kerry Washington I actually wish she wouldn't sraightne her hair. I remember how stunning she looked in Django in that lake scene with her curls.
I hope Lupita will never , ever wear weaves, straihgten her hair or wear wigs like Beyoncé, Rihanna or the majority of black celebrities. Her hair is so precious and beautiful. Besides she constantly proves that she can be so much more creative with her hairstyles even by keeping it natural.

It's such a beautiful annd healthy message for black girls to see a famous figure like her with natural hair. That's why she's so loved I think.
I loved that Viola Davis Instyle cover featured her with her beautiful natural or that she decided to stop wearing wigs during her award season for The Help. I love to see Lineisy Montero and Imaan Hamam everywhere with their natural hair. And I will always remember Lupita first big redcarpet with her short hair. It was such a breath of fresh hair. We're finally heading towards the right direction. People are finally deciding to stop conforming to this idea that every black female celebrity need to have straight hair, just like every male celebrity should have a buzz cut. We need more of this and less Beyoncé and her 50 shades of skin color and blond wigs.

I don't recall that Lupita has/had done anything to her hair, during her awards circuit to date, in the manner of adding chemicals to her hair - rather that it's been texturised (check Vernon Francois's IG her official hairstylist; or either Larry Sims or Redway or Ted Gibson).

Found it! Cannot post a link (on holiday with a very basic Android set), but if you Google 'Lupita CFDA Awards', you'll find that her hair indeed looks straightened at that event.

Anyway, it was merely a suggestion. There shouldnt be this much red tape attached to black hair to begin with as it will serve only to attract more scrutiny to it (case in point: the disdain of Rihanna and Beyoncé's straight hair vs the fawning of Lupita and Viola). I personally don't find Lupita's hair as distinct and terribly important to her image as many on here. If it was Whoopi Goldberg or Fran Lebovitz, then yes, to suggest a change would be preposterous. Doesnt mean I'm reducing them to their hair, just that it forms an integral part of their image, perhaps even more than their dress sense. Mind you, even Whoopi tried something different at some stage in her career.

As I stated in my previous posting, Lupita has indeed never relaxed/straightened her hair to date.

Perhaps, you might like to take a very close look at this picture of her at the CFDA Awards - you will clearly see that she is wearing an attachment/hair piece for her attendance at the CFDA Awards, in 2014.

A bit too blatantly monochrome for my taste, and her skin looks too shiny. That couldn't be an ideal, surely.

Great darting! Any ID on the dress?

She's wearing Roland Mouret; and I agree with Tiffany, I'm also, not keen on the silver pumps that Lupita seems to like. I need to see her in shoes like the stilettos she wore to the MTV Movie Awards
