MacBook

chel - that service isn't available in many regions, including where I live. :(

Caitlin C - Honestly PCers will bash on mac like crazy and make them sound like a completely different species. I found it incredibly easy to adjust from PC to mac. Honestly I didn't even need time adjusting. It's not very different. I actually find it is easier to navigate through things using a mac though. Don't listen to the pc-freaks that say crap like "mac has no right click" ...etc.
There are no mac sales where I live, but if you wanted one for cheaper you could purchase a second-hand one... Personally I'd never do it, but a lot of my friends have!
I'll definitely have to check it out at an Apple Store.

I'm definitely going to need someone to help me with all the things I need and everything else that goes into it. lol

I'll only be using it for internet, music and dvds anyway.

I won't really need any graphic stuff.

I agree with michyed, it didn't take me any time to get used to mac. I even felt I got better at dealing a mac rather then a pc.

I bought a Macbook about 2 years ago and I love it, but the only thing is that my battery is completely dead. I have to have it in charge all the time or it blacks out. I also would like more space on it, since it's always full and I have just find anything to put in the trash to clear some space.

Even though, that hasn't turned me off Macs, and now I really want Macbook pro. Does anyone have any experience with that one? Because it's pretty pricey, so I would like to know if it's really worth it.

I guess it depends how much music/videos you have. I don't keep a lot of music and videos and I have 120GB and I'm using about 30 of that right now so I have loads of space. My best friend has an older white macbook with 60 GB and she has loads of TV/movies/music and has two extra external hardrives to store it all. So it depends really on your usage. I don't have a pro but I have an upgraded version of the new macbooks that came out (ie the ones that came out after the white/black macbooks, but before they all went pro).

As for transferring from mac to PC, if you are computer literate it should be no problem. I'm still not that great at fixing issues on my mac (like if it's acting funny it takes me ten years to get to the CPU page and even then I find it hard to read) but I have so few problems that it's not really an issue.

From what I've seen from the online apple store, looks pretty good.

Won't be getting anything for right now but will definitely research on that matter.

I'll probably go with Macbook Pro.

Aww! You can just get an external hard drive. I find them so convenient, because sometimes if you get a new laptop or something, you just transfer all your stuff through it. Haven't had experience with a Macbook pro, my friend uses one though... I don't find it that different

i have a little more that 7 GB of music files on my macbook(no vids though) and before upgrading my system to snow leopard i still had about 120 GB free so....it really depends on the model i suppose too. i think the newer models tend to be more tidy and compact when it comes to memory and space.

anybody with a new macbook(or any really)having trouble with their disc drive? after i updated my firmware in early december my drive suddenly doesn't want to work....it won't read any of my discs properly, often taking ages to even get loaded and when it does it will stop suddenly and pop out. and i've wasted about six or seven cd-r's because it just stops right in the middle of a burn.

I would call up customer service, there usually pretty helpful. I had some problems when I first got my Macbook Pro and they helped me get it all fixed. good luck:blush:

Wow, they offer student discounts in the US? I hope they have it here in Manila too. :-D

^Check out the Macbook website for the Philippines to see if they do! :)

Anybody have good tips for cleaning the Macbook?

I have the Macbook Pro, which is aluminum and I use a cloth to clean eye glasses to wipe down the outside. For the screen just turn the computer off and use a damp paper towel, and the keyboard i just wipe with a dry paper towel

yeah, i either use the wipes for glasses or any other cleaning wipes.

I got a student discount for a MacBook online -$100.

I asked this in the other thread on accident but has anyone tried the MacBook Air? It's really really thin which I'm not sure is a pro or con & I remember an associate telling me that it only has one USB port.

My brother has a macbook air (aluminum casing) and I think they are stupid b/c they aren't that powerful (not like my macbook pro) but if you are a commuter and size is the main issue for you then get one. that is their main advantage/selling point that they are so light and you can stick in an envelope literally so it doesn't look like you are even carrying a computer. Personally I don't mind carrying a few more inches and lbs. in exchange for all that extra Ram, extra graphics card, etc. THe battery doesn't last as long btw charges on his air (maybe 4 hrs instead of my 7, idk) and the adapter and actual computer don't get as hot but I don't know if you care about that.

Also I think the USB thing is dumb on airs. You can't even insert a disc i think. I think you have to plug in an external disc drive.

For cleaning, I also use eye glass cleaning clothes and eye glass lense spray cleaner on the screen and trackpad (which is made of glass) but off course only when the computer is off. Also I spray air at the keyboard to get rid of dust/other particles and just keep a silicon keyboard protector on the keyboard and wash that from time to time.

juicy, thanks for the recommendation. it seems i am not the only person with this specific problem. it really seems to have stemmed from their end and i hope they find a solution soon because i don't have the apple care at the moment so i can't call.

Thanks, pinksatin! Yeah size isn't an issue with me, the MacBook itself is pretty light anyway. I need multiple USB ports so having only one is a major con, but other than that it's nice.

i have to install windows now on my mac because i can't use certain programs for my job on a mac. i'm SO bummed.

does anyone else have experiences with parallels and windows? also windows XP is not available anymore. ugh!! windows 7 costs 200€. :(

i heard the air is not worth it. it costs a lot more and it's just a bit lighter but also VERY fragile. i would not buy/recommend it...

ETA: my macbook pro has two usb ports but i bought one of those things where you can attach more usb devices. no idea what's that called in english, maybe usb hub? looks like that:

i have one with 4 ports but there are also other sizes available. it was pretty cheap too, like 10 euros?
