Maggie Cheung

Those films were received very badly because they were aimed at western audiences in the first place. They just don't relate. Asians have a different preference at what is generally accepted to be attractive, just as in any other culture. E.g. Lucy Liu is considered hideous. upward slanting eyes in asians are only considered attractive to westerners.

Cheung is probably the third most hated woman in Hong Kong next to Zhang Ziaohui (the ex model). Don't get me wrong, a lot of people used to like her, including me. But I find it hard to look past her recent behaviour.

Maggie Q is already considered very curvaceous in asia, since all the girls are stick-thin. I do admit that a 'good figure' is a matter of personal taste, so it cannot be argued, and perhaps it was bad judgement to compare a 20 year old to a woman over 40. Yet, on the streets of Hong Kong, you will see that nearly every 40+ woman has an comparably better if not equally 'good figure' as Cheung, especially in the Central or Admiralty areas.

Obviously i'm looking for trouble by posting in the "I love Maggie Cheung" thread, but I just thought I'd play the devil's advocate and let you girls know what Asia thinks of her.

I'm confused, are you addressing my post or Pinky's?

Maggie Q is beautiful, but IMO Cheung has that "it" factor. She has more presence in films (aside from being beautiful).

don't worry ukfashionista, all harsh comments should be directed at me right now

I don't think Maggie Q is a good actress, she's one of those Britney types, who sells her body rather than her craft. We can all stop talking about Q now.

err well hero is an action mainstream-ish film, clean is a french film that about 3 people saw, and your arguement according to which wong kar wai makes films for westerners is up for debate. if it were true, hed have cast a western actor i think.

what's an asian film FOR asian audiences according to you?!

who are the most beautiful asian actresses in your view

You're right. A lot of the Asian films that are popular here aren't well-received in Asia. "Crouching Tiger" was super well-received here, but the film is generally considered nothing special in Asia.

I'm not going to say to what audience Wong Kar Wai markets his films. I've never read anything where he has said specifically. But one does not have to cast western actors in order to market a film to a western audience.

I think Maggie looked absolutely stunning in "In The Mood For Love." I don't care if a lot of people in Asia look like her or better. She looks good on screen to me, and I'm a fan.

Dumplings, Seeing Ghosts, Golden Prostitute, Infernal Affairs, etc.

Actually, a lot of people saw Clean, the Toronto Film Festival is a very high profile event.

Why did Wong Kar Wai cast an asian actor that only western audiences find attractive? I think you just answered your own question. He made Chinese history seem novelty, also in order to niche his film as 'exotic' and 'different'. There are tons of Asian films set in the ancient periods, why asian audiences find his film Hero cliched and stale is no surprise.

I'm sorry I've seemed to offend and upset you in disagreeing with you on the attractiveness of your favourite actress. She is definately a hated woman in Asia, not for her looks but her low-class behaviour. But if you're situated in the west, and since the west finds her attractive, I don't see a problem.

Meggie Cheung has a fine body for a 40-something woman. Her style is chic and elegant i think. You're comparing her body to Mag Q, who's a model in her 20s (which, btw, isn't even great).

Totally agree. Meggie does have a good figure and beautiful skin. Btw, Mag Q is short (5'6-7') and thin like a stick. I don't see why she is a model??

wait a minute, are you talking about tony leung (WKW's fetish actor) or about maggie? either way, both are terrific actors and it shouldnt matter whether you think they are attractive or not.

clean was shown at cannes and at the toronto film fest, SO WHAT?! so were 300 other movies. still the fact remains, clean opened in very few theaters in select cities. she aint gonna conquer hollywood with these types of movies.

are you trying to say real asian films should never come out of asia and not be recognized internationally?!

Just one more thought on Maggie Q. She's scandalous, known more for the many men she dates than her acting/modelling. And i don't think she's known to be 'curvaceous'.
THIS is not curvy:

Oh, and back on topic, Maggie Cheung is great.

She must be having a midlife crisis... she's usually so classy and chic.

sorry to bash on maggie but she just wears what every 40+ woman on the streets of asia wears. She isn't considered beautiful there either. She was beautiful ages ago when she was younger, but no longer. All the girls there are insanely slim, so her 'figure' is nothing special, even for a 40+ woman. Want to see a good figure? Check out maggie Q.

Cheung is just trying to revive her dead career by going west.. It's not hard for me to imagine her as a waitress at a cheap tea diner :o

That was blasphemous. And I thought Maggie Cheung was universally loved.
