I want to get started on making my own line of denim and I have designed a bunch of prototypes (mostly for men). Unfortunately I'm an sketch artist and know nothing about sewing. I would like to concentrate on making designs while someone else puts them together. Here are my questions, keeping in mind that I'm on a limited budget:

1) It is possible for me to get custom jeans designs manufactured on a small scale? And if not, where can I find good cuts and styles (wholesale) that I can get altered on my own? I'm guessing it wouldn't be legal to work with brand names...?

2) Say I find a wholesaler/manufacturer that can get me nice jeans, what type of local shop should I go to get custom work done to them? (from custom stitches to embroidery and such). Is it expansive or even possible?

I'm at a lost.. any help would be greatly appreciated! :(

when you say you've designed them how do you mean? have you worked out the patterns, cut and stuff?

i'm made sketches of different patterns that i would like to see embroidered on the pants and I would also like to get custom stitches done on the jeans to create patterns that run on the leg. in terms of the jeans themselves, i'm not sure where to start or where I can find jeans to modify or get manufactured...

it's going to be a huge pain to machine-embroider pant legs once the pants are already assembled.

generally better embroidery machine setups involve a hookup to a computer or a means to read from a disk or something so that you can take digital images and create patterns from them.

less of a pain than getting than manufactured? I'm just starting so its low budget

yeah, just because of the logistics of it. pant legs aren't wide enough to accomodate the machine easily, ya know (unless you find someone who has a machine with a looong free arm)? if you did the embroidery by hand, that would be another story. unless you just want the embroidery around the ankles.

to make allover custom machine-embroidered jeans you'll probably have to embroider the cut pattern pieces and then assemble. finishing depends on how fancy you want to get.

ditto crepe..

very hard to place a small order in jeans
minimums could easily reach 100+ per size/style

Is starting a denim jeans co. the same as doing a regular design company with all types of clothing or is there more that goes into it? What is the process is beginning a denim company like Guess, Levis Jordache? I am doing some self studying on the business of fashion and I began to wonder if a Jean company operates the same way.

Thanks very much.
