Marc Jacobs F/W 09.10 New York

fantastic clothes, fantastic make-up, fantastic hair!
i just can't wait to listen to the music in this!

YUCK.

Why anyone would consciously want to bring back the 80's is beyond me. It was full of hideous colour combinations, unflattering-unfeminine silhouettes and just general tackiness.

For me, this is probably THE worst Marc Jacobs collection ever.

And furthermore, I can't see how any woman would want to pay thousands of dollars for something like this. Especially given the economic climate this collection just seems a bit self-indulgent for Marc. I'd expect women to invest in more timeless, classic pieces. Seasonless clothes. This looks very trendy and very of-the-moment; so I can't see the immediate appeal.

Besides this is just messy and it seems disorganized. Theres no unity throughout and everything looks forced and pretentious.

:innocent:
Perhaps the fact that it isn't timeless, classic and safe is it's appeal. Anyone who wears any of these pieces is bound to feel good because they are fun and lighthearted.

Honestly I think that's the key to recession proof fashion, because fashion serves exactly the same purpose as movies and music do during times of crisis, it's an escape, a way to forget and a way to pick yourself up...even if it's only fleeting. I think that Marc was at least smart to remember that much.

And I definitely disagree with you about the 80's being a horrible time for fashion. It was anything but unflattering and unfeminine. Everyone remembers the huge shoulders, but really it was all about creating a tiny, insanely hourglass waist.

OK, so this is almost the entire collection. Some of the links on catwalking are still not working, but the majority of it is here! It's quite interesting!

oh so ugly and fun. Anyone who wore this stuff the first time is waaaaay too old to wear it again. It's very editorial, but I'm trying to imagine who will buy this?

i really like some of this, the tackiest things are really not my cup of tea but they sure are fun :D

it's interesting, it's creative,it's MJ's new women's wear statement.
the MJ girls are much more fierce than any season of before.
it's very 80's Disco and Punk.
It's not my cup of tea commonly, but this time MJ rocked me!

Wow, I like this! I love everything besides the second to last in #109. Edit: And the second and third in 112.

I can't wait to see the neon now.

indeed. but, in this economy, can they afford it?

Enough with the economy! Judge the clothing, not the recession we're in. I'm so tired of hearing about the economy.

Fashion can sometimes be an escape. And there are people out there who can still afford MJ.

Whilst I agree with your idea with fashion acting as an antidote to reality; I think you're forgetting a vital point. Films, music and art are accessible and relatively affordable. High Fashion is neither. Furthermore, the people who have the luxury of purchasing these pieces - I think its safe to say - aren't affected by the economic crisis and don't need an escape.

Besides, one of the things that separates Marc Jacobs from the rest, and what makes him such a brilliant designer is that he obscures his references in his collections.

This is the first time he has blatantly taken an inspiration "The 80's" and not bothered to elaborate on it. That is what is most disappointing to me. Theres nothing new here because its way too referential.

The words of Cathy Horyn

Just arrived at the Marc Jacobs show, with many fewer people. These times…No set or bleachers, just red carpet. Said hello to Andre Leon Talley, who was cloaked in his genuine matador cape.
“Is it a Snuggles?” I said.

First impression: NY dolls, small, squat, big candy floss hair, satin elf booties, satin in sick tarty jewel colors. Bad girls. Yaarrrgggh!

Juergen Teller is going to have fun shooting this collection. So New York in the old freewheeling, non-branded times sense. Jacobs said backstage he can’t fix the economy, so he might as well have a good time. The collection, in all its bad-girl, wet-dream vividness, recalls Jacobs’ early career. The models scarcely looked themselves tonight; more like dolls. All bubbly. The show started two minutes early. The Spinnerettes were on the sound system.
