Matthieu Blazy - Designer, Creative Director of Bottega Veneta

Do we think it’s a coincidence that his apparent departure to Chanel has been announced today, 15/11 aka the day he was announced the new CD at BV in 2021? But then again, can we trust Ms Tweed with her “exclusive” reports? The person who was aggressively pushing the fact that JG is leaving MM whilst his contract at MM has actually been renewed for months LOL.

I honestly don’t think MissTweet’s all that people make her out to be, she’s just another semi-insider with a few connections here and there. Except unlike most others, she’s not attached to a publication or some sort of bigger entity so she can fling everything she hears onto the web with little consequences. A couple of good scoops out of the kitchen sink she throws at us is enough to get her credibility.

than she been right on many other things ...also if one don't trust a news source why read into it ....i don't think she aggressively pushed or confirmed she JG was out at LV its always written in context of sources and insiders notions and ideas and thing can look strongly like its headed into that direction while few days later change for other reasons we wont ever know.

i know people at mm and they were also left in the dark for a while because JG expressed himself to the team his unhappiness with the owner of MM and also did not continue to work as extensive while negotiation where taking place before summer

A hot take, fashion has nothing to gain from Chanel right now, maybe in 10 years when tacky reality tv stars and influencers hold no power over media. Anyone with actual talent will just go into early retirement with a Chanel appointment.

Of all the contenders that were mentioned this almost seems very random.. His work at BV isn’t even that great, and we are already tired of it and him… so just scratching my head trying to figure out this choice…

I don’t know who are “we”, but he’s only been gaining momentum in the wider media. Not that I think it would be a good appointment but the big houses will always look to general public rather than fashion-y people.

I should rephrase that, “I” am tired and bored… But nonetheless I agree in disdain!! :/ the bar is low, which comes as no surprise and fitting of these big houses!

I actually think that fashion has a lot to gain from the next appointment at Chanel.
Chanel defined the current economic landscape of fashion, the way brands show fashion and from a pure fashion stand point, it’s also a base, a « repère » un curseur!

Chanel is still the biggest fashion brand in the world and so, no matter what, people will look at the brand and it moves to see where the direction of fashion should be.

They went so much into commercialism in the past 4 years that everybody followed.

The designer of Chanel will have some kind of authority. We saw it with Virginie. No matter whatever crap she designed, it sold well.

And it’s a bit what I see in the desire of some people to have Hedi Slimane there. He is an authority and so having an authority at the biggest fashion brand in the world is a statement!

And I think it will be good to attach some kind of fashion forward-oriented talent to one of the big fashion house. Schiaparelli being the most anticipated Couture show during the Couture week is not good!

BVs biggest problem is they are followers. This is highlighted by this perfume which will likely be discontinued. DIdn't BV have a perfume under Maier that met a similar fate.

Ianother reason Blazy can't do Chanel is bc BV copies Hermes, Chanel, LV... many inspirations are in their bags. I was just looking at this new BV Pouch that has the same chain that LV has been doing for seasons upon seasons... If I notice it, other customers notice it.

@style_expert explains why I think that Blazy would be a good fit for Chanel.
Considering his still relatively young age, Blazy has the experience (even in couture), the fashion credibility, he speaks French... His BV has been very diverse in terms of casting, image and trying to exude global appeal.
But I think most of all he seems like a nice guy, a total team player and someone without an enormous ego or diva behavior. His BV is still doing financially well in a more challenging market than before. And maybe he doesn't insist on a $10million (or more!) annual paycheck.
In short, I can see Leena Nair and co liking him. Their plan is Chanel the brand first and foremost and the CD should play second fiddle.
His team-focused, "evolution, not revolution" approach to Bottega Veneta (evolution, not revolution) would work as a good way to gradually pull Chanel out of the Lagerfeld canon, without causing a hard whiplash amongst the clientele.

Looking at his collections for BV, I'll argue that his Chanel wi]ll be liked very well with Chanel's more mature, ladylike customers. I do think that the girlier, more coquette side of the clientele will be a learning curve for him, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I think the strategy for BV is to focus on very important clients....

Someone buys a bag and the sales assistant can offer some small leather goods connected to already the purchased bag... then maybe a fragrance....then maybe some gold-plated jewelery..... then maybe a second bag or a little leather jacket and so forth.

I think the main goal is to make the consumer experience more deep and build consumer histories.

At Hermes they offer some fragrances, jewelery, clothes, even TABLEWARE, even if the client wants a bag.

On the other hand there are many fragrance collectors having hundreds of fragrances and thirsty for new stuff...

I think the crucial phase for Bottega Veneta (and Kering Beauty) is more developing a BV or Balenciaga skincare line in future (maybe in a some years...). But at the moment Kering has other difficulties......

At the moment noone can foresee how successfull BV fragrances will be.
In the past there was Bottega Veneta casa line with furniture... and it failed
Balenciaga skincare sounds frightening

Oh he should ask 10 millions and more for the job.
They pay much more for their horses.
