Matthieu Blazy - Designer, Creative Director of Chanel

Just from a bloated ego after being the Chosen One to lead the most prestigious name in fashion. Perhaps I'm just being cynical.

I just don’t think that tracks with what we know about her? Unless I missed something? Is she supposed to be a terror personality-wise? There’s no way she would have worked with Karl for like 30 years or whatever if she had aspirations to be THE designer of the century. I simply think she failed at the brief, but I really want to know why there wasn’t a better contingency plan after Karl… I mean, come on. Why did they let her design for so long? Maybe 2 years max.

I know it won't be worse than THIS

This is not that bad though? Much more tasteful and Chanel in essence than this monstrosity for example:

Yeah, many couture clients were not thrilled about Viard's designs, this is what one of the male chinese couture clients posted on ig after she presented her couture collection:

This puritan collection haunts me still...

Its beyond bad. The tweed looks like papier macher, the bottom of the dress (?) is like made out of a mosquito net. The cut is like she never saw the female or human body in her life. Insulting to present that in a Chanel runway.

If Viard only made boring collections like Maria Grazia, I wouldn't say anything. But what she made at certain seasons was just offensive. Bad design on top of cheap looking fabrics. And hey, those fabrics are not cheap at all, it takes a certain (lack) of talent to make them look that way.

Chanel is a couture house in essence. They can't get away with showing bad fashion season after season.

All I see in the dress you posted is quality of materials, craftsmanship and a understanding of the female shape - Its not a simple dress but its not a cheap dress either. Not to mention Karl understood that the Chanel silhouette was more about the hip area, even if he deviated from that several times with belts, pseudo corsets, etc.

I’d say it’s not tweed but sequins.

Im excited for Matthieu.
After all, he is French. He won’t have to « learn » Chanel that much.
The challenge will be to envision Chanel beyond what has influenced his vision of Chanel and what was potentially his favorite era of Chanel.
And I’m talking more for RTW.

I think the 20s are much more easier to tackle in Couture.

I think this is giving Karl too much credit. I truly think he made ugly sh!t just to tell the audience. And I'm not even mad at that. At least it's self aware. VV made ugly crap, fully believing it was 'artistic '.
But it’s not even about Karl.
Galliano has put out monstruosity at Dior on the runway that MGC would never design. I’ve seen ugly designs from YSL.
Some designers are on the spectrum between tacky and ugly.

Karl may have been intentional about an ugly design but that doesn’t mean that he is intentional about it ugliness. Sometimes, you try and you see if it works.

I don’t believe in this hyper intellectualization we like to push for designers. Not everybody is Miuccia Prada. But Miuccia herself has never pushed fashion in terms of shapes.

I really don’t believe that classically trained designers are that cynical when they are expressing themselves…Karl included.

And I wouldn’t be sure that Virginie designed with that mindset. I sense that Couture is about attitude or feeling rather than creativity or exercise de style. There’s something very relaxed in her shows but also a kind of desire to be down to earth. Her work was never really « culturally informed ».

Bit late to the game, but I’d be interested to see where he takes Chanel. But I’m not really excited for it, in fact I’m far from it. Not that I think it’ll be bad, just right right now it feels like yet another designer move so all I can really say is good luck Blazy.

Is he still with Pieter? Curious as it’s a little funny that they’re now both at what were houses that were helmed by pretty much archenemies. Alaia and Lagerfeld… Mulier and Blazy…

That being said, if they are I genuinely hope they don’t share any design ideas with each other. Also with Raf. The trio need to distance themselves from each other. Especially between Mulier and Blazy as there were instances where their Bottega and Alaia shared WAAAAAAY too much with each other.

20 Sept 2023 Mulier, now the creative director of Alaïa, and Mr. Blazy split up earlier this year; they are friends and share custody of the dog, though .. noo worries lol

^ Interesting, as it felt for a while their design ethos for their respective helms at the time were fairly reliant on each other in some capacity. Especially with certain pant and jacket cuts, even if Bottega and Alaia seem so far from each other bar the focus on artisanal craft/skills.
