McQueen Comments on Celebrity Designers

one of my pet peeves, "people that state the obvious". I know that people dont expect that Jlo,or jessica simpson, or P diddy or any celebrity will come up with the detail or workmanship that McQueen demands, there are many famous designers that can't hold a flame to him, i think he may be just at a loss of words...

Yes, he stated the obvious, but sometimes even the obvious needs someone to rally in his/her corner. B)

I think the world of "art" needs more quotation marks. The way it seems models are now actors, actors are now singers, singers are now designers, etc and so on -- and everyone is whining (myself included). :innocent:

models turned actors can be expected since models are based off of their looks, no their mind so model turned anything is inevitable, I think that gets lost intranslation for alot of people even though it is sooo obvious, but actors/singers turned designers are doing it completely for commercial gain without really think about anything past the $...

I don't care if a celebrity has actual talent or interest in the area of design.. but that hasn't really been the case, has it? Props to McQueen.

But the arguement is still valid since so much of the fashion press and the ultimate consumers are treating them all as if they are "designer". The lines have blurred and I really think it's the fault of the people supposedly bringing fashion to us in their pages or on telly. And with Americans generally so disillusioned-or rather ignorant-with the mere term of design....people need assurance of what's so and nobody is doing that. I mean,Anna Wintour is supposed to high priestess of fashion but there she is always going on about Sean Jean and the like and featuring their clothes and their celebrity persona's constantly in the pages of Vogue. I mean, one cannot compare McQueen with Sean Jean...but she's doing it time and again.

what about his mediocre diffusion line?

I agree.

Fashion is trying its hardest to modernize its elitist image and is failing terribly. Celebrity design is a hoax...but these so called super talents are not far behind in being delusional, in overcharging for fantasies made of fabric that fail to transport people out of the muck and mire of what it actually is to be alive today.

Is he even on point to turn a profit by the deadline? Perhaps another useless, overpriced sneaker collab is in the works. The thing is, no matter how much smoke we like to blow up McQueen's behind, even he is not immune to the numbers game.

I think it's cool to hear an actual well-known designer comment on celebrity designers. I do not think P.Diddy is real designer as his head designers are. Designers need to make money too, and I wouldn't bash Mcqueen completely for his outrageous prices because that's what he can do, he is a well extablished haute couture designer, and is extremely talented more so than you can say for P.Diddy.

Yeah, he's stating the obvious, but he's the only one to actually come out and say it...
....oh, how I love McQueen...

THANK YOU ALEXANDER MCQUEEN!!!!

To many tacky celebrity turnerd fashiondesginers lines are out ther Sean Jean,Chick Nicky Hilton,JLo,Shady an Countless other crap brands. If the celebrity cant dress themselves half the time(excluding jlo) How the hell am I suppose to trust them to dress me.

Whatever background I think that a designer “trained or not” having a great vision or the balls to go for it is courage’s ….

I believe it’s a huge risk for a celebrity should it all will go very very wrong …..

^But the reality is that most celebrity fashion lines aren't born out of a real fashion for passion but rather they're just another way of expanding their branding empire. How big of a risk is it for J-Lo to produce a line of Juicy-esque velour tracksuits and stick her J-Lo name on it and sell it in-stores, with a full-on adveritisng strategy backed by millions of dollars? With full knowledge of their fanbase size and demographics, there is in fact minimal risk. The same goes for Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, P.Diddy etc. They are all cashing in on their celebrity status and raking it in simply because they know their worth. There is a high degree of business acumen involved in these celebrity lines and they don't just appear because a celebrity whimsically wants to be a fashion designer (or in fact that they even have a true interest in fashion....). Gwen Stefani may very well have a true passion for fashion but I'm pretty sure there is no way L.A.M.B. would have happened without first being 90% sure it would be a success (that is what brand agencies and market research companies are there for....).

Fashion as a commodity may be happening all over, not just with celebrity lines but I think we still need to differentiate between those who have a true passion for the art of fashion and those that are simply there to make bucks.

yah he creates good one
but i think he is missing some where

I have more admiration for actors and musicians who don't use their "celebrity" to make a living. IMO, "they lose all of their integrity as soon as they cross over into that sort of crass commercialism."

So, I suppose the next time to wait for is: when an 'important' person says to support the growing and local (and relatively unknown because of big names) designers .

Is anyone else annoyed at how celebrities these days are always being called "fashion icons"??? UUgggghhh! We all know they have a personal stylist! And it not's like some of these celebs don't have enough time to go shopping on their own....they have stylist because they simply are all clueless, yet there goes the press calling them all "fashionista's "
I can't stand the whole link between actresses and musician's with fashion anymore !!!!!!!! :yuk: Stop this madness!

there was a tv interview on fashion television
not sure when it will show again..i wanna hear and watch him say it in person

I dont think fashion is trying to modernise its elitist image! I think that that just has happened socially. I mean we live in a world where the middle classes are the majority, where the lower classes and the upper classes all try and appear as 'ordinary' as possible and genuinely are getting there. We all can afford shops like H&M and Topshop who move with the runway and the trends more synchronously that high street shops used to even a decade ago. The stigma of second hand clothing has been removed in one fell swoop by the word 'vintage' and the movement associated with it. Couture places houses firmly in the red. Style is no longer about money. It is certainly dissimilar to fashion historically where the nobility and the peasants were clearly distinghishable from the attire.

That is all well and good but it is ok for fashion to be elitist in terms of intellectualism in my eyes because if people arent interested or up to scratch, it is their loss. I dont know about you, but I am so fortunate to exist in a time where it is not about muck and mire and fashion isnt meant to be a fantasy. I dont think McQueen thinks it is either. Mild escapism perhaps. Why are 'super talents' as you call them delusional for the prices they charge? A phenomenal amount of effort goes into these pieces and often they are so avant garde that they move they entire direction of the fashion world to tell us about the world we live in. It is fashion so intellectualised it has become art and many many collectors pay exhorbitant amounts for bits of paint and canvass by people like Picasso or Rubens which hold the secrets to the time in which they were painted.

No McQueen and Helmut Lang and The Antwerp Six and Rifat Ozbek aren't immune to the numbers game and I am sorry for that. In a perfect world, they would be the money spinners and D&G would be reduced to designing skirts for Miss Sixty or whatever. But that is the nature of intellectualism. It is an elitist thing and not because people dont have the opportunity to take that path, but because they choose not to. It is far easier to be part of the Labour voting, Sun reading masses and just live and die. It is a question of the garden of Eden or the apple of truth. Give me the apple anyday.
