Meisel and Vogue Italia parting ways?

Mert & Marcus never done anything elegant & classy. Those 2 should stick to VP. They fit that VP image.

+ VI would feel like VP and thats not what we want as reader.

Precisely! He even managed to turn Kate Upton into a star with only one VI cover. I'm most gutted for Ine and Julia. They wouldve gotten their covers sometime this year, I'm sure. The build up in campaigns and edits was certainly there. I can see Julia and Maartjie still getting VI under different photographers, but I fear for the unconventional looking girls like Natalie. They will have an even harder time breaking through because I know of no other high profile photographer who support new girls like Meisel.

I do wonder how this move will affect not only the rising stars of today's industry, but the popularity in model aesthetics from here on out. It's so interesting how such a petty little argument could change the face of fashion as we know it... I'm curious to see what will come next.

I welcome the change. I also hope that VI would change art direction, it´s become stalled imo.
Here´s hoping that Meisel would start working with US Vogue more often or even with other more edgy publications :)

I think Michael Thompson and Mikkael Jansson come very close to Meisel. Like him, they can mimic many different photography styles and classic photographers like Avedon and Newton.

Michael Thompson is GOAT. As you say, he's incredibly versatile and terribly underrated. I'd love to see him somewhere like Vogue Italia, but not in a permanent manner a la Meisel.

If the rumors are true, Steven will of course be missed, but I think VI needs to 'breath' and I will welcome a change in guard. Perhaps even a change in editorship. :innocent:

I'm sorry but that's not true. They have done beautiful, creative work and homages (like Meisel), especially at the beginning of their career.

I have not posted a comment to any of the threads here for a while cause some of the latest in the fashion world recently kind of bores me and makes me not want to post a feedback about them but this has definitely got my attention and I think I should share my sentiments.

This is truly a sad news to begin with. Vogue Italia is nothing without Meisel. They rose to prominence and has become what they are today because of him. I mean, come on, let's face it. With all those photographs that have become controversial, iconic and remarkable, VI has become the magazine that people would always get excited about. Although recently the past few issues were not that as glorious and groundbreaking as they used to be in the past, still, people look forward to what Meisel has to offer in a new VI issue. Especially the cover since the magazine is like the higher form of art in the world of fashion publication. It's like the queen and other Vogue editions are the princesses. It's really sad to see Meisel go and how things have ended up between him and Franca. There isn't a proper closure between them. There's bad blood. I grew up with Meisel shooting Vogue Italia month after month and I think it'll be a little struggle for me to move on and seeing a thread "Vogue Italia June 2015: x by M&M/McDean/I&V/Klein/Lindbergh/Roversi" etc. :(

Well, here's to hoping that wherever Meisel will be, I just hope that he still produces the same quality of photographs and that he never runs out of ideas. Crossing my fingers for Anna to give Meisel his regular stint at US Vogue like shooting the cover from time to time. With that, we'll get to see him work often with Grace and Tonne.

I'll definitely miss Meisel at Vogue Italia. :(

Let's hope Vogue Italia June issue coming out sooner than usual, I'm dying to see how the cover will be

Ugh, Im gonna miss him for Vogue Italia. One of the few Vogue magazines that actually produced amazing, intriguingly beautiful editorials/covers.

Ughhhhh. No!! At least Meisel places models on the cover who are actually great models.

I'm sad for this actually. :( I might not have been loving his work lately, but I fear Vogue Italia might turn into Vogue US without him.

Crazy, but perhaps for the best, if true. Disappointment and apathy are the only things that clearly come to mind when thinking of Meisel's work from the past 5 years, and that is only because I know he can do so much better. So hopefully this will spark a new burst of creativity.

And honestly, I sort of feel the same way about M&M if they are indeed moving to VI. I used to be in love with every photo they took, but it's become redundant and crappy tbh. Maybe this will give them a chance to really focus their ideas and create something timeless.

Franca needs to go, though. She's tired.

If he is being replaced by M&M then I'd rather he stayed...

I hope this is true. Meisel has been stale for years, and a change may do him some good. Everyone is replaceable, and so is he. Vogue Italia will do just fine without him. Franca should give other photographers a chance to play.

My first reaction to this would be sadness. I don't know if it'd be for the best or not but I certainly hope he stays.

I totally agree with that... I think Lindbergh and Roversi could have done a fine job too but not exclusively...I think if Meisel, Roversi, Lindbergh shot covers that would have been better rather than just Meisel... There were so many iconic editorials in VI that had the cover material... Meisel's his works started looking tired and repetitive 10 years ago... I don't think one photographer should do their covers... and I dread the thought of M&M getting this job... In my opinion, they are copycats and have not got a unique artistic vision... I would love Yemchuk to do some covers for VI... her editorials have right VI aesthetics and they are beautiful... I'd love to see some B&W Lindbergh covers too...I'd love Guy Aroch to work for them too... he has this cinematic take which I love...

A very sad news.
MEISEL X VOGUE ITALIA was one of the best collaboration in fashion. But maybe he had too much power...
It reminds me a little bit of what Vogue Paris was during the 70's-80's. Guy Bourdin and Newton were literally the bosses of the mag.

I don't want M&M for Vogue Italia because i'm tired of them but the change can be good. Franca can make the good choices and use new photographers or lesser known photographers.

And What about PRADA? I mean Miuccia is a friend of both Franca and Meisel and we all know that most (if not all) models featured on the cover of VI made it to Prada. I wonder if this will have an impact on his relationship with M.Prada.

I think I mentioned this as well, Lola. There's a chain-like link between the three; Miu Miu/Prada + Meisel + VI. This change will without a doubt affect that understanding to some extent. I also wonder about Templer. He worked with Meisel on Coach and they've done great work for that brand so far. And now Meisel will be working for a rival publication?

While I'm incredibly sad and disheartened by this news it'll be interesting to see how Franca fares without Meisel. I've always assumed she pretty much let him call the shots in terms of the covers/cover stories so I guess now we'll see what she's really got. That being said I don't think there's another photographer working now who can compete with Meisel so locking one down another in a contract like his would be a massive mistake on her part.

^ Agree! She should test the waters first before locking someone immediately. Give it a year of changing photographers and see how they deliver.

I'm still really unsure of M&M. Every work they produced reminds me of Vogue Paris. I don't know, but maybe it's because I'm so used to seeing them in VP that almost every work they produce quickly gives the VP recall. Add Edward to the picture and you have a classic Carine x M&M.. so I don't know how that will turn out. Even when they're doing W, I still see French Vogue. The only time I don't see VP is when they're doing an editorial for US Vogue and that's because of Anna's strict and thorough control to which I don't see Franca having such. If she gave Meisel the freedom, then obviously she'll hand it out to M&M and alas, hello VP in VI. That's the thing about Meisel, he gave VI the distinction it now enjoys and I don't see M&M doing that for them. I'm not saying that their work is low quality, truth be told, I adore M&M, but I just don't see them working for VI.
