MET Costume Institue Gala 2025 : Superfine: Tailoring Black Style (The 2025 Met Gala)

It's kind of crazy that Gucci and Balenciaga had no presence at all this year.
Gucci had no coverage either last year, they are in cutting cost mode and don't wanna spend 75k+ for media coverage at the MET.
Also they don't have at the moment any decent VIP / celebs design director who could come up with something relevant to generate media buzz.

Ridicolous for C-list brands like Ferragamo and Moncler, who had no business in participating to these events, to pay so much to get MET media coverage with table + custom made looks for celebs...everyone trying to replicate Swarovski boom from last year without realizing Swarovski got lucky with the virality (even though I must admit previous years' looks were amazing, especially Karlie and Anok). No one will remember about these Moncler and Ferragamo looks in 2 days, the only one who got advantage of this was Kylie who got her big check for wearing that ugly gown.
Imagine Ferragamo execs paying 75k+ for the table + at least 50k for custom looks, travelling expenses and everything just to dress Kylie, who never wore Ferragamo in her life...

^^
Being at the MET for those brands and those executives (Remo Ruffini of Moncler is one of the richest man of Italy, he support a lot of designers, he is an asset and sees Vogue and the connections to Vogue as an asset) is about Anna but also a competitive thing.

Being able to be in conversations with brands like Vuitton, being able to dress very exposed celebrities sends a message to customer and to the industry.

So of course Ferragamo will take the opportunity! They organized a dinner, participated at The MET and maybe increased the brand awareness to some people.

Giving the year Kering had, it’s probably best for them, even more considering that they already sponsor the Lacma and they will probably have a presence at Cannes and Vogue world.

And I think Saint Laurent does it because their ambassadors like being there but they do the bare minimum too.

The reality is that when LVMH sponsor, they usually have a huge representation. Vuitton dressed a lot of people. Marc Jacobs can afford to dress a lot of people (they don’t spend a lot on marketing anyway).

You have to make a point if you really to exist at the MET now.

It’s maybe an unpopular opinion but I think it’s maybe for Thom Browne to calm down on the people he is dressing.
The TB magic is not working anymore and for me, the impact MET after MET is decreasing.
It sometimes feels like his work is « one style fits all theme »…

And about the MET, maybe the problem with it is that it has become very big as an entertainment but it’s a fundraiser. People who attends or want to be at The MET understand that it gives status more than any other Redcarpet event. It probably help them meet people they wouldn’t meet in others circumstances (that’s where Anna’s power come into play) but the comments Mary J Blige made got me thinking.
Would celebrities who really wants to be invited at those events, pay the 50K?
Lewis Hamilton bought a table. He loves fashion, he is supporting it, he attends events, doesn’t force himself to wear things because he is under contract….And he was one of the best dressed men.

Best dressed:
Lewis Hamilton
Imaan Hammam
Bryan Tyree Henry
Honourable mentions: Khaby Lame, Ugbad Abdi & Gigi Hadid

Worst dressed:
Halle Berry
Pamela Anderson
Ronaldo's girlfriend
Shakira

I think you'll overestimate the relevance and importance of the Met Gala, it's a celebrity event, the last thing Anna Wintour has full power and control over it, and it's a facade to hide the decaying Vogue/Condé Nast fashion mags business and Anna's lost of power over fashion hirings and consultancy.
It's important for US independant brands and designers but many can do without, especially if they have to concede some image control to Vogue's people.
And conglomerate are control freaks too.

A look that I missed last night that I really love... Justice Smith in Valentino.

Valentino had a pretty good night overall also with Colman Domingo. Guillaume Diop is pulling this look off nicely too:

I don’t like the majority of these looks. For an exhibition about tailoring and the black dandy, most of the attendees look awful in their outfits. Everything looks so over stuffed, over padded and strained.

It’s all so predictable. At least they’re on theme I guess, but who cares really? I’m just happy the MET stays funded.

True her power decreased because magazines have decreased as a whole but Vogue is the last one that still has a cultural impact.
After all, she was kind of clever going Hollywood. I was never a fan of the decision as I have always believed that fashion needed gatekeepers to not loose it essence…
But as brands have totally become dependent on celebrities and celebrities are still looking for Anna’s validation, she is still winning.

And we see it. She doesn’t even have to be popular among all the designers anymore. Pharrell was approached for the Met Gala and Nicolas for Vogue World. And with JWA at Dior, considering that Loewe was already a sponsor of the MET, Dior could be the sponsor for the MET next year.

Her move to entertainment is probably one of her best decision because now CN is totally dependent on her in a way.

It’s a bit sad for Vogue though because ultimately, it’s a brand that is holding to it last breath.

I found it an enjoyable MET Gala and, while it does not compare to the religious themed one where everyone was really on theme due to its easy interpretation, this was very good. After going through every look, my favourites were :
- Gigi Hadid
- Lewis Hamilton
- Imaan Hammam
- Raul Domingo
- Jenna Ortega
- LaQuan Smith
- Monica Barbaro
- Tom Ford
- Raul Avila
- Brian Tyree Henry
- Jasmine Tookes
- Will Welch
- Kaytranada
- Madonna
- Jalen Hurts
- Angela Bassett
- Liu Wen
- Russell Wilson
- Jodie Turner Smith
- Melody Lucas
- Barry Keoghan
- Joey King
- Keith Powers

i agree with your Fei Fei Sun choice - she looked wonderful  (@shadedgaze)

Agree. It feels like the event has eclipsed the magazine itself. Watching the livestream, I was thinking that Vogue will eventually become primarily a branded events business.
