MET Costume Institue Gala 2025 : Superfine: Tailoring Black Style (The 2025 Met Gala)

Fei Fei Sun, Gigi Hadid, Imaan Hammam and Jasmine Tookes were definitely the best dressed models. Miranda Kerr was good. The others just looked like their regular tired selves or street walkers who need to step away from the clearance racks.

Who approved Amelia Gray's look? I feel so bad for her.

I think Liu Wen, Jasmine Tookes, Imaan Hammam and Adut Akech were the best dressed models.

If I were president of this gala, I would ban women from wearing theme-less gowns. They probably were the ones at Halloween parties dressed as sexynurse/sexykitten etc.

As it stands I'm not sure that I can recall any memorable looks from this year's MET but I will say that I think this year's show was one of the strongest in a long time. Less of a circus than usual and a nice range of looks from what could've been a quite restrictive theme. Off the top of my head I thought Madonna, Riri, ASAP, Zendaya, Jennie and Anok stood out.

More than anything it was just so wonderful to see the spectrum of black icons from last and present so well represented, from Dapper Dan to Spike Lee to Coco Jones. So glad they took the spotlight or at least shared it with the usual vapid white stars.

I guess we were all expecting Kering to go missing in actions and get no tables / celebs due to the Current restructuring, :
- Gucci: waiting for Demna to take over, 0 celebs (flop era for more than 2 years now...good luck with the -25% revenues)
- Balenciaga: waiting for Demna to move to Gucci, only Nicole Kidman
- YSL: only Miss Bieber (snoozefest) and Rose (typical gen Z kpop idol)
- Bottega Veneta: Blazy out and Trotter in, 0 celebs

The real surprise and shock was the total absence of Versace from the radar, not even a single celeb in sight apart from Donatella herself. They could have pulled a David Koma x Blumarine stunt with some looks previews made from iconic Gianni looks reinterpreted by Sabato Ancora 2.0 (Dario Vitale), but nothing. If there's one brand Who built a legacy over Red carpet dressing and could have benefitted from the MET coverage, that was indeed Versace...missed opportnity? Anyway, maybe it's better Vitale skipped cause this years theme was absolutely abysmal and hideous.
Well Dario has been there since like a month… he has to completely reinvent a brand, so I think it was clever to not participate. By the way I think that the work on the looks, the choice of the celebrities to invite starts months before so he couldn’t do anything anyway

The standouts for me overall were Coco Jones, Chance the Rapper, Christian Latchman, Colman Domingo, Diana Ross, Dwyane Wade, Imaan, Keke Palmer, Stefon Diggs, and Sora Choi. It really felt like the theme led into people being more playful with suiting on the men's side, with a lot of bright colors/patterns and loud overcoats.

Also a bit saddened nobody spent a little to sponsor and give exposure to Xuli Bet, a true veteran of African then African-American fashion and a precursor in upcycling....

I just saw this on YouTube and got to thinking...are these types of promotional videos now contractually obligated when stars sign up to be dressed by certain designers?

I know it's meant to be fun and quirky, but I also find it a slightly cringeworthy step up from merely having to praise the designer who lent you an outfit during red carpet interviews - now they're literally singing (/acting) for their supper.

Tangentially, I had always assumed that those "Get ready with me for the Met / Oscars" type videos that Vogue and others do were initiated by the magazine, but now I'm wondering if the brands dressing the stars are requesting / paying for them in exchange for even more publicity....?

Thoughts?

It's just advertising. I don't know if there's really much of a thing anymore where one artist befriends another to dress them. Yeah there are some relationships that exist that are more honest like Cate Blanchett and Nicolas Ghesquiere etc but marketing comes number 1 for the most part, especially for "The MET Gala". It's just Super Bowl stuff.
