Minimalism is back to make 2010 a fussless year for the chicest of recessionistas - sharpness and clean lines appeal to many and nobody knows this quite as well as the Swiss house of Akris who, due to creative director Albert Kriemler's keen eye for detail and couture-like qualities, have revelled in profits surmounting those of even Chanel.

But New Minimalism doesn't always inspire the multiple personalities of designers to return to the basic white Jil Sander shirt; Hussein Chalayan presented a strikingly beautiful collection of simplicity and concrete-like creases in fabrics.

Also, New Minimalism isn't about basic clothing - it's about simplicity to intrigue the viewer, to lure them in as so they look at the intricate details and don't just look up for a wow-factor. These are the basic ideas of any haute couture house.

"Bling is dead." Karl Lagerfeld said, and after experiencing his astounding white and black summer collection for Chanel Haute Couture in 2009 you couldn't really doubt his word. For Spring 2010 Lagerfeld continued his train of "new modesty" in his namesake collection with extraordinary effect.

One of the most anticipated collections of the season was Celine by ex-Chloe goddess Phoebe Philo. The collection was literally fashion for the modern woman, bringing together immaculately minimal and ultra-wearable pieces with summer trends including leather and the mini-skirt.

Bruno Pieters could really have excelled with his trademark minimal-architect look but he opted for draping instead, leaving only a few looks appropriate for this thread.

Love this but when is minimalism not in? I know it never feels out of style for me.

    I've always been a minimalist...I don't think of it as a trend.

    i love anything minimalist.
i feel there is no point embracing this style if your home is one big cluttered mess though, there is more to minimalism than fashion imho

I like this a lot - particularly some of the architectural details in the Chanel collection. It's refreshing after some of the 80s retread decadence.

i think a lot of this also goes along with recent focus on geometry, architecture, + draping rather than on detail/extreme colour... though of course there's still Rodarte et al in contrast, but I love so much of this too. The minimal colours also make anything that is coloured -- like that awesome chartreuse below, or a pop of cobalt blue shoes or whatever -- so much more of a statement.

feel the need to add in Yigal Azrouel too, just because:

i know! i really adore him and i'm always baffled as to why he's not a bigger deal than he is, i think his stuff is spot-on and wearable as well and fits really well into both minimalistic and detail-oriented concepts... and bears so much resemblance to much 'trendier' things, yet nobody really seems to talk about him that much. weird. maybe it's a deliberate PR choice?
