Model Casting S/S 10

^ I pretty much agree with the last part, and with below comments on theimagist.

Obviously, the runways are a little sloppy this season. I think their just choosing whoever.. I doubt that getting into the big shows this season will hold much weight, because its not going to lead to anything for these girls...

and

That's true. Shows have been reduced to a low level of importance for a model's career. For once it depends on the model's natural talent how far she gets instead of booking such and such show and "thus she must be interesting". There is no point anymore in following all those new faces. There is no pattern, there is no trend because there is no importance.

It's an interesting season concerning new faces and their carried over succes across the Atlantic and the European continent, that's for sure. The absence of so many experienced top girls these past few weeks might have forced designers and casting directors to use more new girls. And when you use more new girls than usual, it's obvious to only take the best of the best. Apparantly, there are only a few that are the best of the best and it's those girls that we see all around (Bregje, Mirte, Jacquelyn, Ginta even). Or maybe it's just that with the absence of the big girls, the sea of new girls seems even larger, which makes the casting directors filter and filter their showpackages untill only those who seem good and befitting for the show that stay swimming in the pool of succesful bookings. This sounds logical to me, but still confusing casts exist with to0 many new girls, that pop up here in there again, but not at anything big.

Agreed with what was posted, especially this paragraph:

All this is not rocket science but for model watchers it is our peculiar amusement. The cynical anticipation in all this is that this rush of 15 and 16 year olds stand little chance of swiping campaigns from those long-distance runners firmly entrenched in the business. But the truly formidable one or two just might and those are the girls who make the game worth playing. Stay tuned.
The dynamics in the next few months will be particularly interesting - even though the big names skip out on shows, it is unlikely that it will affect their potential to be cast in major campaign roles/their relationships with the designers & brands. What can the newer girls - no matter how many shows they walked - do about that, really? Inheriting the torch is a rough process...

But oh Wayne, at least try to spell all of the names right!

Nothing new under the sun, really. Show season is just a launching pad, the real deal breaker is who catches the attention of top campaign clients and photographers - and actually delivers when given the chance. Very few will manage to shake up the establishment, as usual. I think that goes without saying, though I agree that the correlation between runway success and taking that next step has become even weaker. But it's not a drastic change and not a big one in the long-term perspective.

Meisel will use a lot of the new girls for sure, as he always does, but all of this talk about new faces happens every season in my mind, it was just shocking to see the new girls be in shows usually dominated by more-seasoned models to me...

did anyone else go HUH?!?!? when they saw Miranda Kerr walking at Balenciaga???
i don't totally get that...

^ some info regarding the casting :)

by Ana Almeida

Miranda took a break from enjoying the sights of Paris with Orlando thanks to the one man: Nikola Koke, casting director extraordinaire for Balenciaga and Portmans (which Miranda was the face of) of late. Word is that she might even do a few more shows. Nothing's going to stop her now!

Ashley Brokaw casts Balenciaga. From Women's Blog:

Balenciaga Spring 2010 Show
Time: October 1, 2009 at 10:00 am
Designer: Nicolas Ghesquière
Stylist: Marie Amelie Sauve
Casting Director: Ashley Brokaw

From a different article on Grazia, regarding Portmans, they say that Nikola Koke is 'Balenciaga’s movement coach'.

Dior brought them out, people! Natasha, Anna S, Toni, Anja, Trentini, Maryna, Tanya D, Sasha!

To me, honestly, many of the more seasoned girls don't have as much incentive to do the runways. They can do a few big shows, and then haute couture, and still make an impact. Also many of the girls are probably taking a season off-they may be going back to school, they may be taking care of personal business, they may be shooting other things, or they may just want a breather. Come casting time for the campaigns, though, they're going to be at the top of the lists-they've established themselves, and the designers and photographers know them, and it definitely has a bit of an air of safety to me, which in these economic times is important-you have to play it safe.

And this season, with more and more new girls walking the runways, it's going to be absolute pandemonium come casting time, because you have more girls for the same number of spots, or perhaps even less. You're always going to see "the supers", but I think the main thing is that in the time period between 2003 and 2005 (you could go 2006, too), there was an even larger influx of new faces, or so it seemed. It's just become more and more intense as the years go on. Undoubtedly, there's at least a few girls who will probably get a little bit of traction, but how long that lasts? That remains to be seen.

Also, as Wayne said, Paris is a city that very much has the "cabines". I would say for a good 70% of the big shows, you're only going to see one or two newcomers, with the rest of the models being either totally established names, this generation's "one-namers" (Anja, Raquel, Natasha, Freja, Karlie) or semi-fresh faces, meaning models who have a couple seasons under their belt. It will be very interesting to see some of the castings as the week rolls on-Chanel, JPG, Hermes, Givenchy, and so forth.

I think this season is a game changer and that we are seeing more new faces and even breakout stars because designers want to go in a different direction. I think an interesting point in the Imagist article is that many of the girls who did well in NY carried that momentum into Milan rather than Milan anointing its own set of new faces. Of course once a girl reaches a certain level, she does not have to walk in 40+ shows anymore, but if they are high fashion girls they need to be a presence on the runway, and also do their fair share of opening and closing shows, the only real exception I can see to this is Raquel and perhaps a couple of others. I don't think that the current crop of top models are magnanimously clearing the decks so that Abbey, Constance, Jacquelyn, Jac, Karlie, Liu and Tao can get their piece of the pie, a model's career is too short and the economy is too bad for these girls to be so picky. I would think that in this economy runway would be more important not less since it involves exposure to the editors for editorials, and more importantly, to the designers for campaigns.
