Model's Age - How Young Is Too Young?

this i said in tanya's thread before it was moved here

i think even 14 is too young, because i do not believe that the age should not be determined by when a girl becomes interested in fashion. on the contrary, i think models should start after/when they hit puberty, so they have some sexual maturity, and are somewhat able to decide on what they would like to do in life, and can make larger decisions for themselves. at this age, models are also old enough to speak up for themselves and not allow others to take advantage of them

I would prefer not to see models doing certain types of gigs until they are eighteen or older. If they do "adult" modeling then they should be subject to the same guidelines and regulations as child actors.

Even successful models have been traumatized by their experiences in a harsh industry that is not known for taking good care of girls. I'm not sure if being 16 would make much of a difference. This is why French parents, who see the industry close up, think that modeling is no different than prostitution.

former supermodel Karen Mulder

When she quit modeling, Mulder alleged that executives at Elite had used her and other models as sex slaves offered to politicians, influential media figures, and other officials. Mulder then was admitted into a psychiatric facility; Gerald Marie, the head of Elite Paris and one of the men she accused of abusing her, paid for her treatment. Marie was earlier the focus of a BBC sting operation that filmed him offering a woman posing as a 15-year-old model 300 pounds for sex, and talking of his desire to seduce as many of the teenaged contestants in the Elite Model Look competition, which was how Mulder originally shot to fame, as he could. Marie remains the head of Elite Paris.

this i don't understand a bit: so the industry hires only older models - what might change? they are still going to do whatever agents, designers, and photographers tell them to do. if modeling is indeed a dehumanizing, exploitative business, i very much prefer that only teenagers are used because it is more appealing to my moral sense of human dignity that only immature kids and not grown persons would willfully enter this degrading relationship with clients and employers; if modeling is not a dehumanizing, exploitative business, then it makes no difference whether one starts modeling at 12 or 22. so no matter how we view modeling as a vocation, hiring teens is at least as seemly as hiring adults, if not hugely more progressive so. it is obvious that we in fact have a moral duty to recruit models at a young age

they should start at 17, start working at 18.

You cant say 14, 15 oder 18..

You have to look at each person. Some are with 13 very far und some are with 18 like kids.
Thats the point. But generally i have to say. That 13 till 16 years old a girl should meet with friends and so not enter the runways of Milan, NY or Paris.

You can say whatever you want about Tanya starting at 14, but at least she did not shoot editorials in panties and a small top at 13.
While I think Tanya looks great on the Versace runway I can't help but wonder if Gianni would have used her. Or Jac. Sorry to Jac fans, but she looked so out of place in the FW 09 Versace runway.

^I agree the nudity and oversexual shootings are one of the worst things. 16 year olds doing a shooting without bras, only their arms covering some parts of their body because it's high fashion, Toni Garrn topless in Italian Vogue when she was 16 years and two months old or Supreme Management taking polaroids of an underage newcomer also topless that were removed later because the parents didn't know of those and stuff like that are wrong.

Things like that don't always damage the girls mentally but if the agency push her to do such things to have an extraordinary portfolio then it's more than wrong and would you want your 14 year old daughter or sister or relative to be naked in public? I wouldn't and that's why it's not okay to just say that it is how it is.

Very good post and very true!

I doubt any user here would like to see his/her underaged sister or relative in picture which contain nudity. There should be stricter rules and it's absolutely not ok/acceptable to present any underaged girl like this.

Exactly. I think also parents should be blamed, because at 13 you believe everything. Even when you think you're mature, you're not really. I know my mother would have never let me take those shots when I was 13. And shouldn't the womenswear collection in February and September show clothes for women? Sometimes when I see on WFC old shows, I can recognize real women (curves or not). I understand that lpeople at Calvin Klein, Prada and Jil Sander prefer bland and fragile girls, but I'm sure there are 18 year olds who can fill that description. Ah, the times they really are a-changin'. :ninja:

i actually remember hearing that tanya did a hugo boss underwear campaign when she was 14 i think...

to me. i believe that the model should be 15-17 to be doing editorials and campaigns but nothing to racy... and that a parent should always be there to have consent over the material that is being shot. and for models to runways when they turn 18. and then, they can do whatever kinds of things they want to do in their career. but this is my opinion. but i know i can not say anything bad since i love these young girls as well. i have always supporter tanya dziahileva and ali michaels since they both started. and karlie kloss is so succesful and so young still! but i'm 18, and if i were scouted, i would of course jump up and say yes to a scout that "discovered" me. people want fame at a young age now a days... i feel like i just scrambbled on about nothingness... lmao

^^^^^I have a set of 11 pics of Tanya that I have had since 2007 and she's definately nude..... She's doing the hands across the chest thing, the hair combed in front thing..... there pretty risque'......

  are you Gerard marie? you cannot be serious
the fact that they will be making decisions based more on their moral standards and logical frame of thought will change
i just assumed that most people would be familiar with the fact that young girls (i.e. me) make most decisions based on money/what will get them more popular..

can you post them?

^^^ ok the only reason to post is cuz there pertinent the discussion cuz one of our posters on this thread stated "You can say whatever you want about Tanya starting at 14, but at least she did not shoot editorials in panties and a small top at 13" I'm not attacking anyone but I have had these pics since 2007 so I don't know how old she was but I know she was pretty young..........source..........bwgreyscale.com
