I completely agree. I could not wait to say Balenciaga, but you said what I wnated and you said it very well. Let's also not forget his cage boots for $4, 175. Just ridiculously over priced. And what is Ghesquiere's
point with this rip off? Is it because he can? Or does he think their will be so many knock offs that he needs to price things so high?

I think that Versace is overpriced for what it offers :smile:innocent:smile: but the MOST ridiculously expensive designer is Balenciaga :cry::(. I mean the jackets from the fall/winter (07/08) collection look like a rip off of the Chanel tweed jacket - and get this - its more expensive!!!

I mean COME ON! Since when is the knock-off cheaper than the original?!

* AND the dress from fall/winter 06, the one that Sasha P. is wearing, I read was something like $130,000 !!!!!!!!!!!! OH. MY. GOD. That is just ABSURD! Who is going to pay that much money - I mean - not even a freaking museum could justify buying ONE dress for $130,000 :ninja::innocent: - so how could one woman justify paying that much?

It's all about the Pretenders for me, and Chrissie Hynde... But whatever floats your boat, right?

wikipedia.org
i'm all for chrissie hynde...the pretenders i'm somewhat indifferent about.
chrissie hynde vs. joan jett???

ann demeulster-somethingsomething-(how do you spell her name?) is NUTS! I take back what I said about Chanel,. At least I know I'm getting fantabulous quality with Coco.

Balenciaga and Ann.

Ummm.....this jacket from Chloe is $8,665 US dollars!!! Making the collection this expensive is just alienating its customers. With the new designer and all, they should make things a little more accessible (ie. cheaper) to draw customers in, and then when they fall in love with the 'new Chloe', next season they should raise the prices.

Either way, this jacket is over priced (even though its beautiful imo)

that's a gorgeous jacket, but i agree its completely overpriced
i really want to know how much it actually costs to make this stuff and how they determine prices...

i'd say mastermind japan is somewhere close to the top of this list?

yeah, i agree mastermind japan is expensive, but it hasnt even come close to lucien pallet finet. like someone mentioned above, i dont know why casual pieces from him with marijuana flower motifs and skulls can sell for so much, albeit made of cashmere. can someone seriously tell me why, as a matter of fact, i mean, i really want to know, is his cashmere say, the best grade on earth or is it just sheer marketing tactic?

i dont know what could his cost be coming from, since he doesnt advertise alot on prints/ tv?

i recently saw a (ok, so it's cashmere) vest from him costing more than a nina ricci by olivier theyskens sweater, placed next to each other in a select shop in tokyo :flower:

fashion pricing is actually quite complex, because there's lots of things involved that most people would never think of (me included, until i read a couple of books on the subject)

first, the "indirect costs" of a collection or a line are calculated. Basically this is all the costs the designers paid for while designing and developing the clothes, and what it costs to sell the collection (e.g. the cost of the catwalk show and the cost to fly their clothes all over the world to sell), to advertise, etc. At this point the designers also have to figure out how much it is probably going to cost them in markdowns when sale time comes around, how much returns will cost them, etc.

Next is pretty easy in comparison. The direct costs are calculated, which is basically the materials for the clothes and what it cost to have them sewn together.

Then they have to figure out a way to spread all the indirect costs out across all the clothes in the collection/line. So that way, each garment contributes a little to the running of the house.

Mary Gehlhar's book "The fashion designer survival guide" offers some insight into the markups involved, using the most common method of adding a markup to the cost of goods sold that will also cover the indirect costs:

When selling to stores, the designer will first double the cost of goods sold, then add an extra twenty to eighty percent, depending on what type of garment it is. For example, a t-shirt would see a markup of 220%, but shoes and bags will almost always be at the top end around 280%. Imported goods will probably have a multiple of 300% plus, to cover extra shipping, import duties, etc.

By adding markups in this way, young brands tend to end up making about a 15% profit (before tax), although more established brands might push up the multiple a little.

Finally, the shop adds their own markup before they sell the clothes to you. It will, in most cases, be identical to the designers markup, between 220% and 280%

So, for a t-shirt that cost $50 to make
cost of goods: $50
designers markup (220%:( $110 ($50x2.2)
Retail price: $242 ($110x2.2)

OR for a bag
Cost of goods: $50
designers mark-up (280%:( $140 ($50x2.8)
retail price: $392 ($140x2.8)

and obviously higher again for imported goods. so you can see how those cost get so skyhigh. somebody mentioned dior being overpriced earlier. well, next time you see one of their bags or jackets, that's not the only thing you're buying. make sure you watch their haute couture show on the internet, because in that bag or jacket you're paying towards the cost of their haute couture collection (which almost always loses money), the cost to dress a-list stars in said couture frocks, and even the cost to put the collection on the internet.

hope all this helps, baroque rockstar

I say chanel definitely. Most of their bags start at $2000+ after their multiple price increases and you can expect to pay $1000 for a simple t shirt. Someone said that the balenciaga tweed jacket are more than chanel but those are $2800 while a chanel tweed can easily cost at least double.

Balenciaga does have many ridiculously priced items but I dont think those are actually meant to sell. Apart from those couple crazy pieces the rest of their prices seem to be pretty in line with most designer today.

LV could be my pick foreve, since that big name print appears everywhere, and i had to promise never to touch them.

I was going through the Barney's men's F/W lookbook, and noticed a Lanvin bomber in some sort of fur... $35,000. And a Gucci Astrakhan coat for $28,000. Both were gorgeous but I can't see the modern man ever spending that much on fur!

Balenciaga has one of the most overpriced pieces. I'm always stunned by their prices

As much as I love her, I'm going to have to add Stella McCartney. I understand that she's appealing to perhaps more of a niche market (vegetarians) but...2000 pounds for a dress coat? You have to be kidding me. And her shoes run for over 400 pounds too.
