Naomi wanted at war crime court

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF7S1SrJZag

What ever happened two decades ago, I'm sure she didn't knowingly "ask", "cajole", or "initiate" a request for diamonds from someone she didn't know. Whether or not she received something and knew where/how/whom they came from are two separate things. Her detractors include Carol White who is suing her for lost money because Naomi backed out of a modeling assignment, and Naomi claiming that Carol betrayed her trust by sending her to any assignment to make money.

even though she's under oath, i'm sure she's lying.

i dunno if she's lying, but i wouldn't blame her IF she was... this is rather scary situation.

people may think whatever they want, but for me she is more than just a supermodel. her success is amazing, she opened the door for so many non white models....

her boyfriend is a russian oligarch and she lives in moscow now. so i think that she is well protected.

i also think that she doesnt want to look bad in front of nelson mandela. she's always emphasizing in the press how they are "friends".

does she have on an illuminati eye?

anyway, I hope she's okay. I know that people who testify in cases like these(war crimes) have to be very careful after. I was watching parts of her testifying, and towards the beginning, she seemed very nervous.

even though she's under oath, i'm sure she's lying.

Those evil eye necklaces are everywhere ...

What I don't get was what this guy was doing at Nelson Mandela's.

That's EXACTLY what I don't get either. Why has no one brought up the fact that Nelson Mandela had this man over as a guest at his house? The focus has been on Naomi and Charles Taylor's relationship, but what about the relationship between Mandela and Taylor?

Also, the man in charge of the charity foundation that Naomi gave the "dirty pebbles" to admitted that he received them and has done nothing with them, so Naomi was in fact telling the truth.

BRUSSELS—The then-head of Nelson Mandela's children's charity said he received "three small uncut diamonds" from supermodel Naomi Campbell on board a luxury train after a September 1997 dinner, but held on to them without discussing the matter with anyone else.

The diamonds are an intriguing thread in the trial of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor, who is being prosecuted at a special international court for war crimes related to the brutal fighting in Sierra Leone from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s.

Ms. Campbell testified Thursday that after the charity dinner, where she met Mr. Taylor, she was awakened out of her hotel bed by two men who handed her a pouch. She testified that inside were "small dirty-looking stones." Other guests, she said, suggested to her that they were diamonds, and from Mr. Taylor.

Prosecutors are interested in the episode because they allege Mr. Taylor funded the fighting through trade in blood diamonds. He has denied that.

What happened to Ms. Campbell's diamonds had been a mystery. She testified Thursday that she gave them to Jeremy Ractliffe, the director of Mr. Mandela's children's charity, and suggested they be put to good use.

In an emailed statement Friday morning, Mr. Ractliffe said he told Ms. Campbell that he would "not involve the [Nelson Mandela Children's Fund] in anything that could possibly be illegal." He said he decided to keep the diamonds, and tell no one, to "protect the reputation of the NMCF, Mr. Mandela himself and Naomi Campbell, none of whom were benefitting in any way."

Mr. Ractliffe said he has turned the diamonds over to South African authorities and is willing to testify before the war-crimes court.

Excellent point. Mandela has many wonderful qualities and I have much respect for him but at times he keeps very poor company such as Mugabe.

The press and Naomi hate each other so it is no surprise they are trying to create the worst possible impression of her. The prosecutors were trying to gain publicity and glamour to gloss over the fact they have done very little for spending vast amounts of money. I loved her retort that she is used to shiny diamonds.

Yeah to me the Mandela thing is key, whatever Naomi knew or should have known applies to him and his staff 1000x over. Of course she can be lying through and through, but I kinda understand the circumstances under which she accepted the diamonds and can believe that at the time she accepted them she was unaware of their sordid history. But even if she knew, what could she do when someone shows up in the middle of the night bearing a gift from one of her dinner companions - I think this was before she figured out how to weaponize cell phones. Again, the fundamental issue was him being there in the first place... see this is exactly why I don't invite Tony Soprano to my house, because what am I to do if he sends a big box of meat to my house as a thank you gift or even worse offers to re-cement my driveway, and in this case Naomi did not even do the inviting.

Now I do think that Naomi can be fairly criticized for not fully and readily cooperating with the prosecution, which according to her she feared for her family which may be true but I doubt is the sole reason for her lack of cooperation. I can understand her reluctance to cooperate, but when it comes to the point where the prosecutors are actually knocking on her door (metaphorically) for an interview or testimony, then she should have cooperated immediately. Although I will throw in the caveat that it is not unheard of for celebs, influential and / or wealthy people (usually through their lawyers) to try to "obstruct" things in order to set up the most favorable circumstances for their client.

Hideous woman.

The all circus around her and the way they accepted her demands is an embarrassment.

apparently there were audible gasps in the courtroom when she testified that showing up in court was an "inconvenience".

she has previously said she didnt receive any diamonds at all before testifying.

i think its time for magazines/publishers/photographers to do stop doing business with Naomi. this case is about the deaths/injuries of tens of thousands of people and children. she needs to take this seriously.

I totally agree.

Um, ok.... why should they stop working with her if she is never a problem for them? I think she is taking this VERY seriously. I can understand why she was hesitant to testify. The guy did some hideous/inhumane stuff!

Charles Taylor 'gave Naomi Campbell diamonds'

Ex-Liberian President Charles Taylor gave Naomi Campbell diamonds after a 1997 dinner in South Africa, the supermodel's former agent Carole White has told Mr Taylor's war-crimes trial.

She said Mr Taylor had promised the model the diamonds during the meal.

The account contradicts evidence given by Ms Campbell, who said she did not know who had given her the gems.

Prosecutors say Mr Taylor traded with rebels in Sierra Leone, giving them weapons in return for diamonds.

Tens of thousands of people died in interlinked conflicts in Sierra Leone and Liberia in the 1980s and 1990s.

Mr Taylor denies 11 charges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, sitting in The Hague, and he has denied having anything to do with the trade in so-called blood diamonds.

According to Ms White, Mr Taylor and Ms Campbell had been "mildly flirtatious" with each other at the 1997 dinner in South Africa, hosted by Nelson Mandela who was the country's president at the time.

Mr Taylor told the supermodel during dinner that he would send some men to give her diamonds, Ms White told the hearing.

"We were sitting around this lounge area at about 10 o'clock at night and we were waiting for these men to arrive," Ms White said.

"She was in communication with them by phone - most likely by text. Someone was informing her that the car was nearly there."

'Surprise gift'

Ms White said Ms Campbell was "very excited" about the diamonds.

"The guys came in and they sat down in the lounge and we sat opposite them... they then took out a quite scruffy paper and they handed it to Miss Campbell and said 'these are the diamonds'," she said.

"She opened them and showed them to me. They were quite disappointing because they weren't shiny."

Earlier on Monday, US actress Mia Farrow, who was at the dinner, had also testified that Ms Campbell had been excited by the gift.

Last week, Ms Campbell told the hearing that two men had come into her room in the middle of the night and given her a pouch of stones, and that she did not know who had given her the gift.

She told the court she had given the stones to Jeremy Ractliffe of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund the next morning because she wanted them to go to charity.

Mr Ractliffe has now handed the gems to police, and on Sunday they confirmed that the stones were real diamonds.

Mr Taylor, 62, was arrested in 2006 and his trial in opened in 2007.

The former warlord is accused of arming Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels during the 1991-2002 civil war - a charge he denies.

Prosecutors say that from his seat of power in Liberia, Mr Taylor also trained and commanded the rebels who murdered, raped and maimed Sierra Leone civilians, frequently hacking off their hands and legs.

The Sierra Leone war became notorious for the widespread use of child soldiers.

sorry but deeming something an "inconvenience" for her is not what i call taking something seriously. just like all the crap she tried to pull to keep from having to testify in the first place.

come on,it's not the like the silly woman is the one being prosecuted....she should open up more than she is. she's obviously hiding details about it because she refuses to ever speak about it and in-court refuses to elaborate. the hague is doing everything in its power to put this horrible tyrant away and they need all the evidence they can garner. yet there she is in all her self-importance not giving a bloody hell about what he did. trust me,if the woman can remember a fashion story or a fashion show she did 13 years ago i think she can remember being given a big diamond....especially in the way it was given to her. she's full of it.

Everything seems a bit shady IMO. First Mia Farrow says repeatedly, on and off the stand, that Naomi received a "huge" diamond, and then she recants that. Plus, she is very adamant in stating that she received one stone, while Naomi and Carole recall several stones. That may be the least of the prosecutor's worries, but that does not add up.

If it were me, I will be as frightened as well. It doesn't matter how the court/police promises they have enough forces to protect her and her family, the insecure and fear is still there; and when it's about your family, most of us gets ridiculous protective, so I can see her point of not testifying I guess.

I think there is more behind it, at least much more than just Naomi receiving diamonds, no one has question about all the other attendants in the party? Even Mia or Carole? The previous few posts of Mandela being one of the possible key factor towards the case might be possible as well.

I saw on Anderson Cooper last night that with the court system at the Hague, it doesn't matter if someone commits perjury because prosecutors don't waste time on that. So these cases are just really shaky in that regard...people can lie and that's the end of it.

i have a feeling that all these celebs involved were invited just cos the Hague became laughing place of european justice....

i think its time for magazines/publishers/photographers to do stop doing business with Naomi. this case is about the deaths/injuries of tens of thousands of people and children. she needs to take this seriously.

but naomi didn't hurt anyone.... its not like she ordered to some poor kids to dig up those stones or she will kill them all....

we all buy clothes made by kids from poor countries.... i hope u get the point...
also, which one of you would refuse diamonds? would u ask where are they from?

I'm keeping Naomi in my prayers.....But honestly nobody story is convincing nobody story really makes much sense and bringing the three women in, only complicated the case IMHO...because even if Naomi said Charles gave me diamonds the details that each woman provided dosent match the others story...
And if any of you seen Carole's testimony you noticed that she's not credible at all....She stated that Naomi and Charles was flirting with eachother but when the prosecution asked her to clarify her statement or provide examples of what she mean by flirting she couldnt even give specific examples of what she meant which seem to baffle the prosecution...furthermore on last Thur/Fri nite she had a Blood Diamond party in her offices so her whole motive is spite....Now Mia stated that she cannot recall much from that event besides Naomi saying that Charles gave her a BIG FAT diamond.....But it was confirmed that it wasnt a big fat diamond it was Dirty Little pebbles in a pouch....
So IMHO Naomi story is the only one that seems to be concrete b/c Mia cant remember much besides pointing the finger at Naomi and Carole is just trying to serve revenge on a COLD Platter....But I'm confident she'll pull through this....

And before the Naomi haters prosecute me for my opinion remember ITS just MY OPINION!!!!!!

I actually agree.. while I don't believe Naomi 100%, I don't quite believe Mia's account as well and I definitely can't trust what Carole White has to say. And plus, she gave the diamonds to charity, that is undisputable right? So its not like she turned the diamonds into a 1,000,000 VS bra or anything.. its time to move on..
