New York or London?

sleazie ninja said:
I prefer neither New York nor London, but rather an imaginary place called New London...where fashionistas, circus folk, elves, ******** and unicorns all co-exist together, harmoniously, without racism, classism or any -isms to speak of. New London will also have excellent dim sum. Who's coming with me?

:ninja:

meeeeeee:heart:

just because i love you paul.

anyway, i think i'd like to live in new york. cant say ive been to london, but if i want to live in an outrageously expensive city i choose tokyo.

London because I live here, I know my way around, my family are here, and I think it offers a greater variety of activities than NYC! ^_^

What kind of activities  ? One of the few things I don't like about London is the customer service; it's quite dreadful, actually. I'm also bothered by the rigid class/ethnic divisions and the escalating crime rate.

I just moved from London, so New York

Reasons:

1) Weather - For 10 months a year, London is not sunny and in the winter, it gets dark at 4pm!!! If you are planning to go, I suggest August & September.
2) I find that New York has more to offer, plus I love how they are melodramatic(sp?) on holidays e.g. Xmas is absolutely beautiful espec. central park, London doesn't really decorate.
3) I love the New York scenary, espec. at night with the lights of the skyscrapers.....
4) The bars are soo much trendier in New York than in London even though the bars in London are pretty good, but the people have more pride in New York trendy bars than in London. E.g. They aren't as arogant and stupid as some of the ones I met in London clubs 'The Mayfair Club' 'China White'. The only bar in London I like is 'Milk & Honey'.
5) I have the same posh London accent so I'm not bothered by british accents.
6) I have been living in London since I was 6 so fed up.

okay not going to go on....

I completely agree!

I've never been to London, but it better be pretty awesome if so many people prefer it over NYC. I just love American cities, and the more I look into going to UCLA, the more I get interested in West Coast cities.

In short, New York. But London would be up there with Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles in my tops.

My name is no longer Paul, I have legally changed it to:
pauliefoofoo (I have an excellent lawyer).

btw, I love you too, with frosted frakes sugar sprinkled on top.

:ninja:

london...because you can go for a quick walk and always take ages and find some new places...

Well well, I wish I could say I've been to NYC. :(
I somehow feel it will be a very 'me' city..yeah, I've especially been lusting to go there since my favourite book is set in NY. :p

Anyhow, I adore London. I was having the worst time last month and my mum and I took a 5 day trip to London, we do this pretty much every year (we've friends who live there), and wow, it's such a great cure for stress. The whole aura/atmosphere and..well, it's just so lovely.
In two and a half year's time I will be attending uni in London! I cannot wait. :buzz:

And I am definitely visiting NY for Christmas in the nearest future..yess again, I've had this dream ever since I saw Home Alone II as a kid.

New York!!! all the way.
London is fantastic but there absolutely no city in the world that could compare to new york.

I know New York well and I don't love it. Everything is so... new. It is nice in the summer when the kids are hanging on the steps of browstone houses in Greenwich Village but the kids aren't nearly as hip as London kids.

I have two categories when it comes to cities:

1) HOW ACCEPTING THEY ARE/UNIQUENESS OF STYLE London and New York (and maybe also Tokyo to an extent) are the only cities in the world which accept all people. In, places like Rome and Paris, you conform to the overall aesthetic and even though that is a fine aesthetic, conforming is no fun for the misfits. In NY and London all the freaks arrive and they change the city just a little bit rather than the city changing them. I love that.

2) HISTORY In terms of interest and history, the only cities that rise up to my standards are London, Rome, Cairo (and I am sure Istambul will when I get there). There is nothing like looking over the Nile along its sandy banks and just being able to see for a second, the Pharoes coming down the banks, or Elizabeth and Leicester coming down the Thames. Being in the Forum Romanum and for a second it transforming from a ghost town to a bustling metropolis at the heart of the greatest empire in the world.

London is the only city that falls into both categories. It is so organic and unique.

That thing about the racial divide in London is bullsh*t AshtonK. Every time I'm in New York, I am shocked how black kids only hang with black kids and white kids with white kids. That is not even an issue in London.

Agreed! There is just no getting round the weather. However, it doesn't get nearly as cold as New York EVER, or as stifling as New York EVER in the summer. Why would you take extremes of temperature over constant mildness?

I am not big on the melodrama. It is a (slightly annoying) American trait but the Brits are starting to get on the bandwagon too. I think London is still a bit too cool for school for this. But then I am of the Christmas-is-a-crap-and-fake-event-which-is-best-ignored school. I understand that people (slaves to consumerism :p) may not agree.

Skyscrapers -pretty from a distance, slightly inhuman from the ground. Don't like them. Apparently in some religions, skyscrapers are the sign of the coming apocalypse. Figures.

Painfully trendy bars anywhere are going to be obnoxious. Trust me! I have come across them in New York and London. However the clients are cooler in London. That whole seedy/indie North London scene, just doesn't exist in New York. It is so squeaky clean there. You just need to compare the clientele of Mis-shapes in London and in New York to see. However we don't have the gangster, ghetto culture here but as it is not my thing, I don't really mind.

Oh last point, the greatest British music (think the Pistols, the Libertines, The Jam) came out of London.

The greatest American music (think Springsteen, Johnny Cash) were a rural sound, steeped in the history of the land.

The New York sound is more fluffy, more ya know Blondie and the Ramones. Put the Ramones next to the Pistols, and they look like the Spice Girls.

If it weren't for the persistant rain I'd say london, there's nothing like a beautiful English morning to set your day off right. I know NYC has rain too but nowhere near as much as London. Last time I went I was praying for some sun and had maybe 15 minutes of no rain time max:blink: .

I'm used to living in my good ol city of new york. It gets a bit overwhelming at times but it's nice.

Edited to say: Not to rag on british boys, one of my ex's is british, but they are just so..... cold? It's very hard to read them. I know someone mentioned how new yorkers are very melodramatic but kids from London are so "Oh. I just found a million pounds. Superb." Yes the drama in NY gets annoying but sometimes it's fun.
