Olivia Palermo

Olivia likes to give the impression she comes from a rich family, but she's got an average background by NYC standards. She grew up in Connecticut, yes, but went to public schools.

She's just a striver. Aspirational. I'm not saying this as an insult, as NYC is full of them and many of them make their mark as Olivia has.

Olivia definitely has honed a socialite's look even if she doesn't have a socialite's bank account. She wears Topshop as if it's Oscar.

I despise the 'designer dumpster' look, and much prefer the mix of high end/low end.

Anybody who has alot of money to spend on clothes can buy designer; this doesn't mean someone is fashionable... it shows a REAL sense of fashion to be able to buy off the rack, with a smattering of investment pieces, and create fab style. This is what gets my attention about her look!

She's obviously also very proud of this since she mentions the mix of high/low in every interview!

There are more signs that verify she doesn't live in wealth: #1 she's part of the cast in a show like The City, something unthinkable and, in some way, dishonorable to high society; #2 apparently, she doesn't select the events where she goes but she accepts all the invitations...

Anyway, I think she has known take advantage of opportunities and achieved her position through their own effort and talent, a very meritorious fact.

I didn't know her father filed for bankrupcy! People always refer to her as a "socialite" and I automatically associate "socialite" with "filthy rich." No wonder why she mixes high and low pieces so often. She definitely is great at looking like she comes from a wealthy family. A lot of celebrities who all the sudden get rich wear head-to-toe designer but ultimately you can tell they have little sense of "style." Olivia looks classy.

Love her shoes in the street chic look, ID anyone?

I have to agree with everyone about her legs, they are perfect and they look long although she's not that tall. I miss her hair a little lighter though :( Always loved it the way it was when she first started on The City.

She looks great in shorts + tights

I happen to see this pic today. It's a pic from 2006 I think so the shoes are from an old collection, apparantly Chloe.

Wow this is so weird. I just came back to the thread and realized that the comment I initially replied to had moved back a few pages... And a bunch of new comments appeared before the one I posted. Now I look silly :lol: TFS bug?

And btw, I think we are completely ignoring the numbers here. It's been about a year since The City premiered - and there have been 23 episodes of The City. 12,000 x 23 = $276,000. She makes the annual salary of a Dermatologist! Now I know this is nothing compared to what some celebrities make, but can you really gonna that Dermatologists "aren't that rich" and "can't afford designer items"? (Where I live, it's the best paying job in the country)

thanks missyjg! i should've known... chloe 2006 was a good season for shoes. sigh. i love those black ones she has.

Do you remember the Armani Exchange dress donated to Topshop "Dress Me Up" initiative (#3977)? I've just found a (tiny) picture of Olivia wearing it :woot::

yea that's one of the very few things i love about olivia --- that she is able to mix the low with the high and create a truly personalized outfit. i respect her for this. i get a great kick out of it every time people ask if i'm wearing chanel when i'm actually in zara :P i bet olivia does too! :flower:

oh I wish I could see these rex pictures enlarged :P

and I also think she is not so clueless as she seems on that elle job, I mean it takes some brains to dress well - at least I think so

I can't believe this has never been posted  Love the first line of the article!

Umm- public schools? Wiki says- The daughter of Douglas Palermo and Lynn Hutchings,Palermo grew up between the Upper East Side, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut, where she attended Nightingale-Bamford School, Windward School, then finally St. Luke's School, where she was on the field hockey team. She attended university in Paris, France for a year and studied media at The New School in New York.

And an article from last year, but this sounds like the apartment we saw on The City... I can not deal with the idea of her living in Brooklyn, that sounds almost like moving to a homeless shelter for someone like her...

And, the final stake in the heart for poor Olivia!! :o You can almost hear the invitations being torn up!!

We knew that Olivia Palermo, best known for her role as the Upper East Side Stereotype on MTV's The City, had given up Manhattan to move to Brooklyn, we never thought it would be for DUMBO. Ew.
On TV, we see her living the glamorous life working at Elle, going to hip parties, attending fashion shows, and being hated by her co-workers. She's supposed to be the real-life Gossip Girl. Which is why our ears perked up when we heard someone casually mentioned the other night that she's now living in this stroller-strewn neighborhood. Not hipsters with trustfunds Williamsburg or hipsters with real jobs Greenpoint, where she might still retain some of her cool cred, but boring, closes-after-7-pm DUMBO. No wonder we always see Whitney Port's apartment in the West Village, but never see where Palermo lives, because she's in a neighborhood that dare not speak its name to the MTV set.
She firstmoved out of her parent's place on the Upper East Side to a $4,150 a month pad on Leonard St in TriBeCa. But it was always framed as a youthful rebellion act. Page Six Magazine even did a spread about just how fabulous it was. Where are all the articles about just how great is to live in the outer boroughs?
