ablogcuratedbyThe pages of Olivier Theyskens printed issue of NºD carry an unusual addition in the top corner – a small rectangular frame that extends from the cover through to the very last page. When ‘flipped’ from the back to the front, the frame comes alive as an animated love story by Belgian animator Nicolas Dufranne.
Nicolas’ story begins with the birds and ends with the birds, but in between tells the tragic story of two young lovers and their demise, as one feeds off the other. A girl appears from behind a tree to find her lover dead on the ground, and as the birds pass by, kisses him to revive his energy. As their lips touch he wakes, and she falls white to the ground – having surrendered her last breath to save him.
For our online release, Nicholas has produced an exclusive digital version of his story, recreating the ‘flipbook’ feeling to recapture the original effect of his work. Watch below as the lovers exchange their dying breaths, in this calamitous tale of fateful mortality.
hintmag.comAnother Fashion Week, Another Olivier Theyskens Rumor
This time the rumor involves Theyskens taking over for Stefano Pilati at YSL. Here's the problem with that scenario. Pilati, despite persistent murmurs of executive misgivings, recently signed a contract for another three years at YSL. So there.
However, we've also heard that others have been approached about the job, including Christophe Decarnin, Hedi Slimane and Raf Simons. Apparently they've all declined, most likely because Pierre Bergé has no interest in seeing the YSL brand continue. He'd rather see it killed and the legacy remain untouchable, observed only from afar through exhibitions, films, auctions, etc. As his foundation still controls the YSL archives, he can and does make life difficult for whomever wants a closer look at the house's DNA. Furthermore, while the CEO of YSL is an excellent businesswoman, she is, as they say, a ball-breaker. So the job isn't a walk in the park, to say the least.
Now back to Theyskens. We don't know if he's also been approached about YSL. It's plausible. Either way, we think he's waiting for that much-publicized theoretical moment in 2012 when Karl Lagerfeld, upon his 30th anniversary, retires from Chanel and Alber Elbaz moves in, leaving the top spot at Lanvin open for the still-young Belgian designer. Of course, Lagerfeld has stated he'll never retire, but it has to happen sometime. As a distraction, it's thought he'll stage a massive, never-before-seen, no-expense-spared farewell. And certainly he'll never stop being an opinionated, larger-than-life presence in fashion.
Olivier Theyskens Named Artistic Director of Theory
NEW YORK — It’s Theory times two for Olivier Theyskens.
In addition to designing the Theyskens’ Theory label, which is launching for spring 2011, Theyskens will now take over design responsibility for the entire Theory brand as its new artistic director.
The move will bring Theyskens’ design sensibility to a whole new audience. Since bursting onto the fashion scene in 1997, the Belgian designer has made a name for himself with ethereal, romantic and sometimes dark fashion aesthetic. An industry darling, Theyskens garnered critical acclaim designing for iconic French fashion houses Rochas and Nina Ricci.
By partnering with Theory for Theyskens’ Theory, Theyskens became the latest in a string of high fashion designers to embrace more accessible price points. In this newly-created role, Theyskens is expected to give the purist label, which was instrumental in creating the contemporary field when it launched 13 years ago, a fashion jolt while still appealing to the existing Theory customer.
The first Theory collection designed by Theyskens will be unveiled for the fall 2011 season.
