The Most Overrated Designers...

Marc Jacobs and John Galliano are seriously overrated ... just like Madonna and Britney Spears

Not a Madonna fan but Neither Britney nor Madonna are overrated. That's why they haven't been replaced...:p

TOM FORD: personality aside (dont get me started), his looks arent innovative and all they do is further the typical mainstream idea of 'feminine beauty'

and his sunglasses collection? if you take a look at it youll see all of his designs are rip offs of wayfarers, persol 714, clubmasters, ted lapidus, vintage diors, etc etc etc.

i think stella McCartney is overrated and i think Alber Elbaz is underrated imo....
John Galliano and Marc Jacobs are geniuses and deserve that recognition, the couture at Dior last january was out of this world..
I agree Marc Jacobs is a great designer and I like Stella her collections are simple but overall she's not that bad.:)

raf, miuccia, marc, ann, nicolas.

just cause it's "fashion forward" and "intellectual" =/= good.

Roberto Cavalli IS insanely tacky. I hate it when people praise him (I'm glad he isn't liked on this site, however). I also wish celebrities would stop wearing his clothes.

Valentino and Versace (though I love Atelier Versace) have been boring me recently. Diane von Furstenberg....ZzZzZ....

Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss are way past their time. Not relevant anymore.

best comment of all thread !!!

Don't agree AT ALL !! Costa is doing one of the most amazing work those days! and manages to stay in the label's mind ...

Galliano is irrevelant ! Hasn't done something good for a long long time !
:ninja: He maybe needs to leave History of Fashion behind him ...

Oh so true!

Christophe Decarnin
Marc Jacobs
Miuccia Prada
Rodarte
DSquared
Rick Owens
Nicolas Ghesquière and Oliver Theyskens have had their bad moments too

i just hate when any designer moves into "messiah mode" where it seems like no matter what, their collections are never criticized very seriously. to me thats where marc jacobs is right now. like last years spring collection. i mean hadnt other designers been doing the whole backwards thing for years and now all of a sudden he does it and its genius? didnt make sense to me.

I don't think Donatella is overrated. Her collections are always criticized even when they are great.... Fashion critics just always happen to say something negative about her collections, even if it's the most minute and they exaggerate it.

Anna Sui is beyond overrated in the mainstream media. Her collections even back in the 90's were a mess.

John Galliano in a sense is overrated, based on the fact that he has done nothing new in the past few years.

I don't see how anyone could see Ghesquiere and Theysken as overrated. Their collections, even if it's the most outrageous, are never compromised.

People seem to be getting "Overrated" mixed up with "Least Favourite"

I am really surprised to see named like Tom Fordm Lagerfeld and Galliano mentioned.

Am I the only person who thinks Zac Posen? I mean, he's practically a household name, and he has never floored me. His designs are just so traditional and commercial to me. Nobody in the mainstream knows who Nicolas Ghesquiere, Riccardo Tisci, or the Rodarte sisters are for that matter, yet everyone has heard of Zac Posen. Also, of course Christophe Decarnin's work for Balmain Spring 2009 was genius - but, it's getting old. There is just way too much fuss over Balmain at the moment.

But it's not just what you do., it's also how you do it. That wasn't my favorite collection of his, but using the deconstruction as a device for portraying sex and undress combined with the surrealism was very much his own recipe even if the ingrideints weren't.

I think that's why he gets so much praise. He takes things that are in the fashion vocabulary and twists them, mixes them with other elements, and uses them in a way that's exciting.

Miuccia Prada is exactly the same kind of designer.

Jeremy Scott was never overrated to begin with. Everyone kinda hated him from the start.

Marc Jacobs however...

Everybody hated JScott from the beginning ??
Where were you in the 90s ? One of his supporter was Karl Lagerfeld ... another one was Björk .... And he was scouted for some french houses back in the 90s ...
In short, he was the Gareth Pugh of the mid 90s ...

Moving to LA just changed his 'state of mind' ....
