The Most Overrated Designers...

Am I the only person who thinks Zac Posen? I mean, he's practically a household name, and he has never floored me. His designs are just so traditional and commercial to me. Nobody in the mainstream knows who Nicolas Ghesquiere, Riccardo Tisci, or the Rodarte sisters are for that matter, yet everyone has heard of Zac Posen. Also, of course Christophe Decarnin's work for Balmain Spring 2009 was genius - but, it's getting old. There is just way too much fuss over Balmain at the moment.

I agree about Zac Posen, but i think Balmain is overrated too. (and overpriced..)

Where were you in the 90s ? One of his supporter was Karl Lagerfeld ... another one was Björk .... And he was scouted for some french houses back in the 90s ...
In short, he was the Gareth Pugh of the mid 90s ...

Oh sorry by "beginning" I mean in recent years. Ive heard a little of his early years.

I think the most overrated designer is OSCAR DE LA RENTA... literally hes everywhere.... every time theres a major occasion hes always there... even magazines cant publish anything without any dress on their pages...

I am really surprised to see named like Tom Fordm Lagerfeld and Galliano mentioned.

Tom Ford, isn't really overrated since all his clothes are always impeccable in terms of quality and style, especially when he was in Gucci.

Lagerfeld and Galliano are overrated because even the most well known designers should receive harsh reviews from critics from time to tme. Even the great designers of the past like Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel had to make sure their collections were perfection to prevent critics from saying anything bad. What fashion reviewers did back then was make or break a/all designer's career. Unlike now, Galliano and Lagerfeld practically "buy" their reviews. Seriously, there's no need for fashion critics anymore, fashion journalism is dead, they simply favor those big names up there.

Marc Jacobs is also overrated. He is and will always be a genius, but some of recent collections, especially for Louis Vuitton, are nothing short of kitsch. Don't get me started on those rabbit ears.... Practically everyone in the fashion industry praised it, and so celebrities follow suit.

Lagerfeld does still design, he just doesn't make the clothes himself (many successful designers do this now). I think the only reason why people still praise his designs and his lack of originality is the fact that the quality of Chanel clothes are never compromised. And unlike Balmain, it isn't overpriced.

I agree with you about the whole praising of money.... Look at Galliano for example, for Christian Dior Haute Couture, he will receive high praises for collections that include overlty expensive poofy dresses that only women back in the 1800's (or before) would even think about of wearing and then when Tisci presents a Givenchy collection that's nothing short of marvelous, it receives unfavorable reviews.

I dont think wearability is really an issue. Pierre Cardin always said "Fashion is nothing without context" but aesthetically fashion should not always be created purely for wearbility, it is also an artform and although Galliano hasnt really changed his aesthetic as a whole as of lately he still manages to capture fashion as an artform and as a way to tell a story.

I don't think it's actually necessary for a designer to change their aesthetic though. I think that their designs should evolve and in some cases push fashion forward but Lagerfeld wouldn't be "Lagerfeld" if he changed. Valentino wouldn't be "the Valentino" if he changed his aesthetic throughout his career.

REI KAWAKUBO: no doubtly her stuffs are tooooooo popular that it lowers the level of her label and makes their customers to be tastelss, especially those PLAY tees...and people who wear CDG in my city are all disgusting.
MARC JACOBS: he lost his control few years ago... appointing MADONNA to be the face of LV ad campaigns is the most obvious evidence.

I can't speak for Lagerfeld, but Galliano, at least in my time following fashion, has received some pretty scathing reviews both at Dior and for his own label, as well as receiving some pretty lackluster ones as well. I mean, if Style.com is the only review you read, then obviously you wouldn't see that. But I don't think it's at all fair to say that he just always receives unbiased praise from critics.

Christophe Dercanin for Balmain. What he does for the House of Balmain is absolute kitsch. I cannot believe women think his clothes look appealing! The 80's was one massive faux-pas, I don't know why people think the second time around, its chic. Besides, Dercanin is a designer that designs solely for commercial gain - his pieces are ludicrously priced for what they are.

Also, Ralph Lauren. He's been designing the same collection for the past 10 years, yet is consistently praised and revered for his classicism and simplicity. His collections are hardly worth the praise they deserve.

Dior: Can We Tease More?

It's amusing how articulately the review about Galliano was created and then abruptly turned to the review of Margiela's collection that started with "Martin Margiela’s show tonight was a let-down." Even when critics say something bad, they always find the deepest reason for the bad criticisms, but when it comes down to other designers, they don't mind just stating their feelings in a few words the collection sucked.

You know when a designer has become overrated? When they feel the need to ban a journalist from their shows because of a bad review and get away with it.
