The Most Overrated Designers...

I think in general most American designers are overrated. None of them actually do anything terribly original, which is ok since no one is fully original these days. But they're also just really uninspired. Im thinking Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Carolina Herrerra.

I think Michael Kors is rather boring honestly.
Tommy Hilfiger... *yawn*
Karl Lagerfeld is pretty overrated... I miss Coco!!
Marc Jacobs on his LV bunny ears... those were horrible. Im sorry, they were gross!
Balenciaga and Oscar De La Renta are also really overrated. They are great, but not THAT astonishing.

I think the UNDERRATED designers who dont get ENOUGH attention are:
Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Nina Ricci (Oliver Theyskens) and Victor and Rolf.
Beautiful creations everytime.Period.
Dont need a introduction, dont need a reason.. they are just gorgeous art!!!

^^FashionablyVivid- Olivier Theyskens doesn't seem to be able to actually sell clothing though so I would actually say that he is horrible overrated.

I agree with all the people saying Michael Kors. He's terribly boring and if anyone has seen Project Runway, I'm sure it's safe to say that you agree with me when I say that he has the audacity to criticise novice fashion designers when he isn't so good himself!

Completely agree with this. They are so boring.

And completely different, but for me Luella is overrated.

i just hate when any designer moves into "messiah mode" where it seems like no matter what, their collections are never criticized very seriously. to me thats where marc jacobs is right now. like last years spring collection. i mean hadnt other designers been doing the whole backwards thing for years and now all of a sudden he does it and its genius? didnt make sense to me.

yes.
YES.

with marc jacobs it seems to be a "cult of personality" above all else while the clothes come secondary. BORING.

I agree with most people here, Marc Jacobs-designed clothing wouldn't look all that genius without his name. Also, maybe it's just because I haven't seen enough, but I can't think of anything special about Alexander Wang. If anyone can enlighten me, please try. :flower:

^Like I said American designers just seem to be reallyuninspired. Nothing decent has come out of New York Fashion Week in years. It's like they keep repeating and churning over the same trends season after seasons for a decade.

I'm gonna disagree with the people dropping Marc Jacobs' name in here. I really don't think that when people praise any designer as a genius they're referring only to the clothing that the designer makes. Fashion isn't just about clothing. It's the vision, the way in which a designer presents those clothes on a runway, the way in which they mix up their references to create something individual to them. That's what people are really praising, and in that area I think Marc definitely deserves most of the praise he gets. Regardless of whether or not you like his collection, you can't say that there isn't an amazing attention to detail and a truly creative mind at work.

Besides, it's not his fault that most "reviews" aren't very critical.

His craftsmanship is not the issue, it's his really outdated ideas, he seems to refer too much to past decades without actually adding anything new, although this in itself is still opinion.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.
Don't curse me, but I think that it is always kinda same and when you carefully look into the details of clothes everything is monotonious. No fresh air.

It's not so much Marc Jacobs is overrated as that I just don't really like his clothes very often.

I agree with people like Alexander Wang. I just don't see much creativity.
New York fashion week is never that inspiring.
Ralph Lauren is hyped with standing ovations and such but I never get that want spark from his clothes.

miuccia prada. blah. nothing but a copy-cat,imo. that sad lacey boudicca looking collection a/w 08,the men's blaak collection from this a/w....i find much of her work pretty pathetic.

Roberto Cavalli always designs such tacky clothes:yuk: Michael Kors is so boring that I do not even bother looking at anything he designs.
