Oversized bags - yay or nay? Discussion

*overheard at the marc jacobs design studio...
ok- so they want big bags???...we'll GIVE 'em BIG bags...

mwahhahahaa...$$$$ in their eyes...

  That bag is insane! The big bag is officially a caricature of its formal self.

Yep, at 6' barefoot and a size 16 I am loving ths trend and plan to stock up while I can! Just bought the Chanel Coco Cabas in leather vs. vinyl...can't wait til it gets here.

I'm carrying one of my Hero bags today and my co-worker (a male) who shares an office with me walks in, stops in his tracks, and goes:

"woooah, that's the smallest bag I've ever seen you with, it doesn't even need it's own chair like all the others"

anyhow, I found it hillarious, it's kinda ironic that my small bag is the one getting noticed in my sea of big bags

I'm loving the oversized Chanel tote featured on the cover of Elle Accessories

There seems to be a backlash against large expensive totes. I see lots of girls carrying canvas shopping bag totes from trader joes, whole foods, or random totes that you can get at conferences, etc. Interesting...

its a bit funny though, because i think the big bag trend was going on a few seasons ago, alah partial inspiration from MK and Ashley olsen.....noted that most bags look big on them anyways, because they are so peitite. (Im not saying they are the sole starters of this trend, i just cant name any more right off the top of my head right now because i just woke up)....it kinda started after people started immitating that...only this fall it has been official announced as the trend, and while i see some women trying to work it, others like myself try to be anti-trendy because we did it before the magazines had the spreads on oversized bags, and are kinda trying to be onto the next thing before it hits the masses and becomes diffused...

Anyway i have one question to the big bag lovers: do you find everything in the bag right when you need or you have to climb and search in it sometimes? Really, i'm not joking. This is my biggest problem with huge bags.

war rations perhaps? (picturing a rosie the riveter ad with a trader joes bag on her arm:rolleyes: ) thank you al gore for making a movie of things that needed to be discussed YEARS ago....( no but seriously...i think perhaps there's a larger amount of people who are realizing the state of the world and the environment and are thinking twice before they do things. so more people are recycling, for the meantime that is, as this could just be trendy environmentalism.)

well, many interior pockets or small make-up bags and such do help in categorizing and locating things.....of course there's always submarine sonar too. i have the same problem!

The purseket comes in really useful for me here. And definitely cheaper than a sonar :p

i think for men, big bags are here to stay

yea in most bags, stuff gets lots easily, but thats why i love the big balenciaga bags, like the voyager

i use the front outer pocket for stuff i know ill be using a lot thru out the day (cell phone and cigs mainly)

then i use the inside pocket for circumstancial items (wallet, keys, ipod, etc)

the rest of the bag is used for lap top, magazines, sunglasses, and anything else that fits in there, and with this organization i never have problems finding anything :flower:

i really want a coco cabas though :innocent:

I like this trend because I always have alot of stuff in my bags. But some bags are just extreme especially on petite people.

But I think it looks ridiculous when people have a huge bag with barely nothing in it. Not only because bags often look bad empty, it feels like you just want to show of a expensive bag.

I love big bags. There is nothing worse than having a bag that is overflowing with stuff and you cant close properly........just too small! My big bags must bo organized though with lots of pockets and pouches so I know where everything is. I agree you can go too big so you feel like you are carrying a suitcase!

I keep my cell and keys and stuff in separate pockets... the rest of the stuff I kind of "organize" into small pouches... that way if I want to look for my mini tweezers, I know it's in my zippy pouch with the shoes on it....

 It's an organization that only I could understand....

The Michael Kors bags have a little keyring leash you hook your keys onto for quick retrieval.. perhaps those having trouble finding items in their oversized bags could employ a similar strategy.. many leashes! There could be the leather one for the keys, a pouch on a leash for the lippy or compact. A bright red leash for the wallet (red for danger, especially in my case!).

Otherwise bags with external pockets make life easier. :D

An oversized bag paired with a petite owner may be geometrically odd, but whether that oddity is poetic or passe is up to each individual's interpretation. I am not impressed when a small girl uses an oversized bag--most frequently a Balenciaga weekender in a bubble-gumy color--to announce her presence, especially when she cannot maneuver around her bag without constantly shoving it into someone else's face, but I blame that on her lack of physical grace; the bag is innocent. Generally, I think oversized bags are the best thing to have come along in a long long time. To me, a bag the size of a Balenciaga classic or YSL Muse confers an aura of confidence. Famous small bags a la the Fendi Baguette or the Dior Saddle always telegraphed discomfort or even awkwardness to me, because the women who carried them always seemed constricted by the short straps. I am no body language expert, but it is my observation that women move more freely when they grab their bags by the handles than swinging them around their shoulders. I hate the Olsen look with a passion, but oversized bags are the least offensive style element in their school of dressing. Oversized sunglasses probably are.

Plus, at the peak of ladylike fashion where cropped jackets, pencil skirts, and vertiginous heels are definitive building blocks, rounding out the look with a proper, chic bag would just be too much. It feels like a costume play. That delicate look needs to be balanced out by something weightier, and a large bag is a much smarter option than chunky jewelry or thick heels. Practicality is just the icing on the cake.

i am finding that i like bigger and bigger bags as i get older (should i be alarmed?!) but at the same time, the amount of stuff i cram in the bags get less and less - i realized that just because the bag is big doesn't me you can put whatever you can fit because it might ruin the shape. so now i basically carry the same amount of stuff as before but just in a bigger bag haha. talk to me again in a few yrs maybe i'll be back to clutches?
