Pharrell Williams - Designer, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear

It feels a bit late for Pharrell. It’s like Vuitton opening a MySpace account.

I feel that there will be a lot of overlap with the codes that virgil was working with.. so it may give consistency and hype short term but it also may feel passé quickly and as though culture is stuck

  1. Is February the new April´s Fool?
  2. You can tell the design team are the ones who are going to make all the dirty work here. Pharrell would act just as the "team mascot".
  3. Could it be worse? I think if Kanye wouldn´t have totally lost his mind late last year, he would be the new Vuitton creative director...
  4. I want Nicolas Ghesquière to have a "one hit wonder" in music and make a world tour of it!! Because if a musician can play fashion designer...then a fashion designer can play pop star too!!!

It feels like years late. I don’t think menswear is moving in a direction that necessitates hype—something that Pharrell doesn’t even have now. If Kanye wasn’t cancelled he probably could’ve gotten this job which sucks. I always thought someone more directional and design-oriented should follow Virgil. It made sense to me to go less street and go more haute to preserve image.

It’s Louis Vuitton so it will always sell but I doubt in the long term it’ll work out.

No one except Kanye, has auditioned as long and hard as Pharrell has, for a job like this.
I think he really wanted Chanel, but this will definitely soothe his ego.
He's no more of a designer, than Virgil was, but I wouldn't be surprised if his collections are a lot better, tbh.
All those design students toiling away in obscurity, will get to see their work on the runway, while he takes a bow, and all the flowers/money.:ermm:

... The news itself and what it represents is more annoying to me.
Same.
All the Designers behind the scenes will do the work and get no credit.
Madness!
I always feel like Pharrell is not as overexposed as others in the past several years. Yet somehow every time I see him, I get the impression he is way overexposed.

"long term' in the last 10 plus year is just like a 3-year cycle these days, so it kinda make sense that way. Once the novelty is no longer there, Pharrell goes back to music, and hire someone new, maybe they can try Cardi B by then...

Exactly.. he had that song with the Neptunes in like 2003 lol, and that really grating one that no one could escape in 2013 with Daft Punk, but he’s been in that odd area between post-overexposure and has-beenism for years now, just hanging by the thread that is the memory of the people who danced to his songs 10-20 years ago, who aren't really trying to find new music anymore and who, for the same reason, swear he is a 'visionary' ready to capture the spirit of the next generation and bring innovation of all things..

He'll probably find fashion more suitable than his daytime job in the long run.. unlike the lawsuits you can get from shamelessly borrowing others' work in the music industry, the dominant 'covers band' dynamic of fashion nowadays (never showing your own designs and always subjected to some deceased person's parameters and best hits on repeat) has normalised the shameless 'borrowing' ('everyone takes inspiration from everyone!') and some will even be more offended by the sole mention than the fact that it even took place. So.. in a way he's in the right industry and 100% in the right conglomerate that churns out expensive junk, not design.

I thought April Fool's had come early but apparently this is real?

As said on page 1 - fashion is entertainment now, screw design.

They must be fuming at WSJ for leaking it, had rush that press release out the door lol

Obviously they advanced the official announcement, the press office in Spain sent me the email with the news and they couldn't even translate the press release.

Its 2023 not 2003 , the Neptunes are not happening exactly. Pharell will do this for a season or two for cash and leave.

A wasted opportunity to appoint someone with real talent, like Grace Wales Bonner, Hed Mayner, etc.

You'd think LVMH would've learned after Rihanna x Fenty but no.

I would say Marc Jacobs did for Vuitton what Tom Ford did for Gucci. So imagine all those years of collections and campaigns to position the brand in high fashion only to wash it all away with this??? A second-rate music producer known mostly for his 'style'? what irks me most if the message it sends for formal education in fashion.

This will receive a lot of praise because everyone will want to stay on but behind closed doors, actual fashion people will say what we're posting here.

I'll say this - if LV wants to continue down the hypebeast road, I can see why (culture of constantly buying new stuff, never letting anything show marks of wear/use so corners can be quietly cut without everyone noticing, heavy emphasis on logos so not that much need for investment in design), it's the cheapest way to part fools from their cash.

Nicolas is still handling the womenswear so they have the burnishing that his reputation gives them, meanwhile the menswear side can just be a hollow cash grab and it won't make a difference. The clothes have always, always been secondary to the leather goods anyway (both menswear and womenswear).

louis vuittion x pharrel williams x adidas x nmd when?

i can imagine this would look a lot like adidas by jeremy scott but more overpriced. Why can't they just have nicholas do menswear too?

^I'll give Pharrell this, he's not quite as clown-like in his style or what I've seen of his designs, as some of the above. I'd be lying if I said I thought it'll be good though.
