Philadelphia Shopping

Take Amtrak to NYC...nah just joking :)
I spent tons of time in Philly for work and get a chance to explore. Downtown Philly has 2 gems for men..... Boyds on Chestnut is probably one of the best stores. Barneys it is not, but they carry Ferragamo, Varvatos, Paul Smith, Brioni AND Kiton, Versace...blah blah.....they have excellent tailors on site and the staff is fairly knowledgeable.....Wayne Edwards is another top store carrying many of the same labels as Boyds but also Prada, RL Purple Label.....Joan Shepp is a womens boutique that many love although me and the Mrs. weren't too impressed....Vagabond was a boutique my wife really loved..very unique......One thing with shopping in Philly is that its fairly concentrated within a few prime blocks and self contained.....

Walnut St is Phillys poor attempt at being Fifth Ave. You will find chains like BR, Ken Cole and then spots like Paris Europa which carries higher end items....The downtown area does not have a good dept store...Lord and Taylor being pretty much it....

There's a huge mall called King of Prussia which many love, but besides the Neimans there I would stick to exploring the shops in center and old city......if you are in Philly for awhile then you will likely make your way out to King of Prussia. Its not bad...Neimans, Nordstrom, Macys, Bloomies, Lord & Taylor....but its just a mall......albeit a big one...

Thanks for the info..

I have been to king of prussia couple of times but never bought anything from like nordstorm, neimans, and those other pretty expensive stores because they never have anything on sale. I saw hermes, versace, LV and others but never went in. I think its one of the biggest mall in the east?

we already have a thread on philly shopping with a lot of info in it. you can search for it.

Philadelphia?

I'm moving to Philadelphia and need suggestions for chic shops apart from the department stores. store names and neighborhood or address appreciated, i'm really not familiar with the city or surroundings. thanks to anyone who can help!

Joan Shepp on Walnut St carries lots (for Philly) of designerwear such as Dries Van Noten and selected Prada sneakers and lots of Euro designers. It's no Kirna Zabete but it has an OK selection. Chain stores line Walnut St (Phillys 5th Avenue) and there's an excellent, well stocked Banana Republic flagship stores which always has deep discounts. I bought my wife a raincoat there for $39 marked down from $200. Vagabond on N Third St is another store which carries a mixture of harder to find less expensive brands. Charles Porter in Old City is another stop. Old City has lots of funky shopping and good eats. Stop by Petunias Folly as well. Boyds (a well stock store knowns for menswear) has a floor for womenswear and they carry Bottega Veneta, Stella, Lamberston Truex, Marc Jacobs, etc...google them for a complete listing.

I know many can't stand malls, but no visit to Philly is complete without a trip to the mega sized King of Prussia, which has Neimans, Nordstrom, Bloomies, Macys and a few upscale designer boutiques as well.

Remember, no tax on clothes in PA and it's only an hour and change from NYC.

Ubiq on Walnut is a nice little urban/hip store (Jeans&Limited edition shoes), my favorite. Charles Porter in old city has your standard brands (sevens, true religion) as does another shop on the same side like 7 stores down from it, but nothing really special. South Street has alot of stores, most are not quality though.

If you come to King of Prussia, its great- I work at the Abercrombie there.
Does Joan Shepp carry mensware?

ok, more philly questions--- any good designer resale or discount shopping? i've been a consignment addict and filenes basement junkie, and it will be very difficult for me to break the habit . . .

I've been to Ubiq a couple of times and left due to the "I'm to good to even notice you let alone help you" attitude of the salespeople...I've been told that the markdowns are good though.

I was in there Sat. (Live 8 Day), not talked to once, not looked at directly once, alittle awkward, but nice not to be annoyed. The markdowns were great (PRPS denim, like 2xx, now 137, too bad I am not a 34" waist).

I dunno if its me or what, but Franklin Mills has become so run down and borderline sketchy (as far as characters) in my opinion. I remember years ago, before Woodbury became all the hoopla, people would take buses down there from NYC and shop. It's dark and besides the NM Last Call and Saks Off Fifth (bothof which are iffy) I think Franklin Mills is washed up....I'd skip it

ok, wanted to report to everyone that i just got a job at knitwit, so if you ever plan on shopping in rittenhouse square, come in and ask for jen. pm me if you'd like to know what we carry, i worry that listing the stuff here would seem like advertising.

Congrats on the job Jen! :woot: I hope you enjoy it and the city of Brotherly Love :)

thanks theory! so far i am . . . bored. i don't know anyone here so it's hard to find out about fun stuff to do! having to work on the weekends doesn't help . . . any suggestions are welcome!
