Pizza Hut Waitress Gets $10,000 Tip

did i say i would throw it back in her face?
its the way one has been brought up. being invited to a meal is one thing or getting a gift for an occasion but to receive such an amount (which is clearly not a tip) while you are waiting is not right IMO. its not to do with pride but with principles and decency i would say.
i understand she lost 2 dear people and that is very very sad... but with all due respect, that doesnt mean someone has to accept money from her... or does it?

But why wouldn't one accept the money? It's pride isn't it? It's understandable not to take money for sex. But taking a gift from a sponsor to go to college, so you can get better jobs and a better education? I'm sorry but I don't understand why you'd turn the money down. And it would be like throwing it back in her face. Because, afterall, you're saying that you're too good for the money, ne?

I don't understand why it's "Decent" and "Principled" to turn down a gift like that...sorry if I've been brought up so terribly :ninja:

P.s. My reaction to this is specifically for this story, it would vary case to case, here it's clear that the amount was a gift, not a loan etc.

i would never take it. too dodgy. Who knowns what she might ask for me later. Especially with all the publicity, I'd have to be grateful for life and 10'000 is not even that much money.

its not necesseraliy just pride if you dont take it i.e. do not accept it. its purely that its not right. and yeah in some ways not decent.
i understand in this case the waitress and the customer had a friendlier relationship where the waitress knew about her customers sad story and the customer knew about her waitress not being able to pay for her school.. so it worked out for the waitress.
i do have children in the third world that i sponsor but they literally need the education to hopefully get out of the misery they live in. And on a different scale i know people where their parents couldnt afford their education and their extended family jumped in to help (i.e. uncles, grandparents, etc).
so i am totally understanding how the waitress must have felt.

i dont feel too good for the money or that specific amount.. but i do feel too good for someone else giving me the money... specially coming from a settlement:shock:... thats why i said its not decent. i was always tought NEVER to accept anything for free.(and that in fact nothing in life is free)

but good on her if it makes her happy. i know that it wouldnt make me happy:ninja:. however i second what the members before me said. i would have to be greatful all my life or as an alternative i would for sure ONLY take it if i give her in writing that i will pay her the amount back once i start working:flower:

This story warms my heart. I too hope that she does something good with the money to help others.

i think after reading this, i'll begin crying over adverts for wholesome brown bread.

Unfortunately, $10,000 is only enough for about a year in college, depending on where she decides to go. While it is an extraordinary thing for a family to do, she's not completely worry-free.

I hope I didn't just bring the mood in this thread down.

 That would pay for 4 years at my local university!

Wow, that sucks! LOL, at UNLV, a resident taking 16 credits in one year will have to pay about $2,000 (but that's not including books and stuff)! Where do you guys live that it costs over $10,000 for resident tuition, I've never heard of that before

What a generous woman. But unfortunately, 10 grand won't get her very far in terms of college tuition.

I understand where both of you are coming from, layla m. and misssakura. But it sounds like that woman lost a very big part of her life, and she wanted something positive to come out of it. So if Jessica had turned down the money, it probably would have upset Becky, who was happy about doing such a nice thing. So even though it may not have been morally right to accept it, under the circumstances I think it was ok to do so.
