Racial Diversity In Modeling

We all know about racism in the fashion industry but will this woman ever stf up. She wants to be pleased she has had a career that has lasted so long and remember that she has had a Vogue UK cover almost every year since she started.......which most other models haven't.
Are we meant to feel sorry for her when she bullied Tyra Banks at the beginning of her career, because of jealousy and her own insecurities.
Instead of showing solidarity and support to other young black models she decided she actually wanted to be the 'only black model' around.
She makes me want to puke with her constant whingeing.
She has abused her position regularly throughout her long career and been pampered long enough and now we should sympathise with her because I'm not sure she saying all this to help the cause, I believe it is all for selfish reasons.

Very few of us are pure enough not to have mixed motives. It's hard not to see the self-serving aspect of this, don't think she even tried to hide it. But she also has a point, which is what we're discussing here ;)

Precisely. Ad hominem attacks don't disprove her argument.

I agree, but the truth is that Naomi is jealous of Kate Moss
Oh,please:lol::yuk:! They're friends why would she be jealous?! She never speaks ill of Kate even when people have tried to get her to over the years(same with Kate, who even said there is a bais in the business). Please get the facts first before making comments like that, your hating is so obvious.

^Ah, now you're going to get me arguing whether being beautiful in the modelesque perfection way qualifies as being a talent. I don't want to insult the models, though, it is hard work, but both Larry Bird and Michael Jordan have a bit more that a catwalk to master.:flower:
I have to agree:lol:,jokes:flower:!

Black magazines in America exist because of racism against blacks in America. It is that simple. Do you know the history of racism? Slavery? Lynching? Black magazines need to exist because supposed Mainstream Fashion magazines like Vogue don't like to put non-white models into their magazines. It is so elementary and simple. Nobody needs White Essence or Ivory Magazine. All mainstream media in the U.S. is already geared to white people. This is why you need black-focused media: black channels, black television shows, black magazines, black movies. Black people are an integral part of America and need to assert their own culture and project their own voice because nobody else is going to do that for them. If these things didn't exist, we might as well go back to the time when black people had no civil rights.

Ehm...well, thanks for taking this conversation to the next level and so nicely removed out of its context. Yes, it is as you have suspected and known all along, dear mintcondish, I am an ignoramus. Hey, leyla, where's that drink

Is it me, or why does Naomi 'competing with' Tyra an issue in the original point which is the declining numbers of black or 'minority' representation in magazine covers?

I have a hard time understanding how all the 'black focused media' is any different than the vogues of the US. If it's okay for there to be black channels, tv shows, magazines, movies, why isnt it okay for there to be the white equivalent? I'm all for both

Because the mainstream wasn't representing the black audiences. i don't know as to how enthusiastic the companies are into segregating the media, but it kinda had to happen. And there's a lot of stigma when calling an outlet a 'white' one. And it's not like 'black' channels are purely black anyway.

no 'white' magazine or media is purley black either... The mainstream not represtening african american audiences explains why those magazines where created, which is important so everyone is represented, but I dont see how it explains why the rules apply to one but not the other.

wow, with $1500 I can buy like 15 jeans, 15 t-shirts, 10 shoes, 5 sweaters, 4 sunglasses and 4 hats. I hope to be included in your Christmas list for gifts

why are you choosing to comment on this?
i can spend my money how i want to, as can you...
my point was that i'm not looking at vogue purely for the models...
i might actually want to buy something...

and to your second point, that's doubtful...

I'm just tired of not seeing pretty girls of color in the mags or in ads. It's almost a slap in the face. vogue and other are seen as bastians of whats percieved as beautiful. What messages are they sending, by having the same skin pale skin toned girls; over and over. Why not try and be diverse, why not try and push the boundaries of comercial beauty.

And for those who say there should be white essence or an ivory. There allready is. Vogue and every other mag has been geared towards a white reader or show is geared towards a white viewer. The diversity on tv and mags is something new compared to our nation. But vogue now a suposed symbol of diversity. Rarely ever puts a black girl in its mag or has black writers.

naomi should be glad to get any covers at all with her attitude & rep. she is a black hole, energy sucker. her look doesnt appeal to me at all. quit already, please. so bored of her.

more diversity would be awesome in vogue, but considering how crappy vogue (american) is now anyway... who cares? they are riding on their reputation of 20 yrs ago. I quit giving money to that mag years ago. got myself a subscription to other zines that appeal to my fashion sense as well as my ethical and intellectual requirements. bottom line if you dont like how someone does business, then dont support them by giving them any of your time or money.

I agree. there are so many beautiful black girls out there I dont understand why I never see any. and good point about the magazines. so true. vogue is a "white essence". I dont understand how some people can't see that or maybe they dont want to see that.

I agree that Vogue sucks now.

Too true. And I never buy it.

Maybe Naomi just hates Tyra and has something against her personally? I know I do.
