Raf Simons Leaving Christian Dior; Maria Chiuri Rumored In

They're doing an excellent job of going from relatively obscure to even more obscure ...

I knew something like this was up for him when it was announced out of nowhere that he will quit his label. I mean why would he do something like that?

Though I'm not thrilled at all.... His work isn't very interesting, or at least hasn't been for some time now.

No T no shade, but I've never seen a memorable collection from him. His aesthetic has nothing to do with Dior, but I can see similarities to Raf's work. So maybe they want to continue in that same vein.

Jonathan Saunders at Dior?

ETA: Seen a few post on instagram where people are congratulating him on the Dior CD position, news should be breaking soon!

Didn' find any posting? , i didn't find. Under Saundersstudio ?

If it's right than we will have very boring Dior.
Maybe tomorrow- Monday, they announce it official?

So the goal of all these changes is to erase every original aesthetic and bring something really different? (i.e. Gucci, Balenciaga).
It's very risky to me but I can't wait to see how it will turn out (if it's true indeed).

If it's true, i have to say that i'm happy for him. First of all, it's a kind of revenge considering how he was ignored by the fashion community in the past few years and then, he is talented enough to pull this off.

Sure, he doesn't have a distinctive aesthetic but that's the case of many designers today and it doesn't matter because Dior has it defined aesthetic: conservative, chic and all the codes of Mr Dior.

I agree with Masquerade and StoneSkipper. It makes totally sense... With a talented but lesser known designer like him they will not have crazy demands, diva's behaviour...etc.
Jonathan (or someone like him) knows the struggle of doing many collections/year. In a way, he is similar to John in his first years at Givenchy/dior...

I honestly don't believe it yet. I doubt Dior will go for someone like Jonathan (nothing against him). It is so, so, so weird and quite unexciting. Dior has to do six collections a year... I don't know. It sounds too far-fetched to me.

I hope this means Alber will take over Chanel in the future or start his own label...

This doesn't make sense to me at all but I'm still waiting for official word because we all know how these things go with the rumors and whatnot.

His designs are like wallpaper, literally. And that’s what Dior will be with him: Wallpaper. And musaz.

@jonathantsaunders - I see a few congratulations on the newest post.

I guess we'll see. I just really hope who ever they get a Dior will bring them some place good and new *crosses everything that can be crossed*

Whoa, i hope its true, he is such a talent, and i thought it sucked he closed his brand.

Oh this is tremendous news! Saunders is quite the dark horse. Who saw this coming? I just hope Dior isn't betting on a Raf Simons V2 because Saunders is much, much more than that. And if that was the case it must mean Raf's tenure at Dior has been rather financially successful - they clearly don't really want to disturb the newly established aesthetic.

I guess zac posen will continue waiting by the phone...

I dunno, I'm excited about this. Raf was just sooo clinical for Dior. And I hated that people dismissed that criticism as some kind of longing for JG to return. He had maybe a 5 dresses under his tenure that I absolutely adored. All the other things he did for the house left me cold.

But isn't LVMH the sort of conglomerate that always go for hyped/star designers? They didn't even go for an unknown one, but for someone whose heyday is looong gone. He had his success in 2008-2009 (more or less), then he fell into oblivion. Nobody really cares about him anymore. He didn't build a cult around his clothes. It's like any other designer, there is nothing really special about him.

And, in a way, this time Dior can't "test". They can't fail with their decision again. It's very risky. After Galliano glory days, the image of Dior was sort of intact (the prestige of the brand I mean). Then Gaytten came, then Raf, then some collections by the team... It is loosing its prestige so fast. And with someone like Saunders, I don't think they can recover it. Dior should be in fashion Olympus, and Saunders doesn't belong there. He doesn't have the it factor that even Demna or JW have.

Maybe I have to eat my words (I hope so), but I don't think he will be a good fit. He doesn't have a strong voice in fashion. He is not a trend-setter. He is very average. I imagine something in the vein of what Raf has been doing. Something very marketable, impersonal...

I agree with Creative. When i heard Jonathan Saunders i had to google the name to check who was he and then i think his works were so forgettable. This is unlike the Lanvin case with Bouchra Jarrar when they came up with a totally unexpected choice, even Lanvin and Dior are on the different levels.

That makes me think of Bruno Pieters or something. Fashion media sure paid a lot of attention for someone that clearly had nothing to say... always a day 2 of NYFW kind of act.

I think masquerade nailed it, he's struggled a lot and will now score the job of a lifetime, he's good at producing industrial amounts of useless cocktail dresses in cute-ish colors so they all win, but mostly him.

Maybe Raf is a better human than I am, but seeing a former employer/lover/etc downgrade is one of those small, underrated pleasures in life. Happy Sunday, Raf. :bunny:

I'm not thrilled by the idea. He wouldn't have been my first choice.

That also means Katie Grand will be winging her way to Dior, since she styled his previous shows and is close friends with Jonathan... What a joyous idea.. not!

Well this sounds unexpected but it also sounds really boring. I remember reading his name every season but he never made an impression on me.

I hope it's not true and I wish they would go for a French or Belgian designer. I feel like Dior needs someone with a sensitive touch.
