Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcons for H&M Designer Collection

I was hoping this would be terrible because there is no H&M
near me for hundreds of miles..
but alas, it's fantastically done & so very Rei...
I'd love to see it in person...
& buy it, of course...
Damn it!

^i feel you :(

one last thing on this topic of comme and marketing...i still think it's incredibly hypocritical of you, bearbrick,to hold one in such a high regard and lambast the other when ultimately they do essentially the same thing. so your arguments have no basis. and as ms-nietzsche pointed out,the only difference i think is actually distinct here is that people who actually buy from the comme umbrella are those that are genuinely interested in what she does and not the label emblazoned on it. which is not to say these other designers are not without their genuine fans but you are more likely to see a larger following based on their status.

and btw, bearbrick, rei isn't the only person that designs, you do realise....have you forgotten junya and tao, particularly? would you say the same of them too or that they're merely puppets under the marketing schemes of rei? that of course would be rubbish.

I agree with bearbrick for the most part. CDG is extremely conscious of their image and they know it helps sell all their wallets, perfumes, play polos, etc. Yes, they do have their runway collection every season but to be honest I haven't found any to be that relevant in the past several years.

Certainly there's talent behind the label and this collaboration is a godsend to all of us that appreciate the CDG aesthetic but can't afford it.

so... wait... you guys think that the worse the fit, the better? that a badly fitting garment is desirable?

like

"omg, this fits like sh*t! i look dumpy in it. i need it!"

?

I think it is rather rude to say there is no substance behind
Rei's approach to marketing...
This H&M collaboration is a fine example of how serious she
takes these endeavors...
She may have her missteps when she starts to rely solely on hype & prestige
(cdg play anyone?), but for the most part, she is a woman of integrity
who rarely compromises her vision or point of view for the sake of $$$..
She may not be everyone's cup o' tea & that's fine -
it makes life all the more interesting, but to discredit her work
based purely off assumptions and a personal bias is ridiculous, imo..
I think she is an inspiration to anyone with an interest in design...
You can be successful and still maintain a sense of self...
It is a beautiful position to be in, I think...

You think a lot of your opinion and the value we will all gain from 'understanding' it. However, you've stated it enough times on this thread for everyone to make up their own mind so please refrain from trolling this thread with rude posts insulting the comprehension skills of other forum members until you have something new to say.

Perhaps people have been reading but simply don't agree? Understanding does not equate to agreeing.:innocent:
Now, about her enigma and aura, which you claim is a marketing tool; in able to convey that enigma and aura, she has to be able to consistently and creatively deliver collections that fit that aura. That requires much more than marketing. If you think her collections and aesthete behind them are overrated (which is what I got from reading your posts) is your opinion.

err............never mind.....what i needed to say has been said ....thats all . ;)

^Not everyone likes Alaia/Herve Leger style fit.

geez, i'm not talking about skin tight clothing. but i grew up understanding that clothes have to fit well in order to be deemed "good".

you do know that there's something between skintight and loose, right? which would be understandable as "well fitting".

and @ bearbrick: all your "....." render your posts beyond ANY level of readability.

^ I did not have the heart to say it.. :ninja:

Bearbrick, you are correct..
I did not read any of your posts because they resemble
something that a pouty, entitled 5 year old would conjure up...
I was merely replying to the poss of those who, I assume, managed to make
sense of what you had written and I was speaking in a very general manner...
So plz don't go around insulting ppl. about 'correctly comprehending' your posts, esp. if they are not comprehensive to begin with.

Anyhow, can we get back to discussing the topic at hand, plz??? :innocent:

CDG is a funny label. It's built itself up so conceptually and is so highly regarded. People are very defensive of it and any criticism has to be airtight. But really, it's one of those brands that people pride themselves in knowing despite that they never actually wear any of the clothes. They will of course go out and get that promotional t-shirt or Odeur 53, or a bright green wallet. And they'll feel happy because they own some "comme".

This is the success of her marketing. But personally, this H&M thing is the best thing she's done in awhile. Really sick of her bandaged, ruffly, victorian, cut up mess look she's been beating to death.

Junya on the other hand is a totally different story, he's a MASTER.

^ Mutterlein, you bring up a great pt...
I think all major brands have those die-hard
fans who will buy anything the brand puts out...
There are victims in every spectrum...
I think Rei knows this, and like most designers of large houses,
capitalizes off these ppl.. as terrible as that sounds..

I would've loved to see Junya for H&M (Tao too ),
but for some reason I don't think it would've gone as
smoothly as this has...

Who's to say Rei's clothing don't fit well. They just have a fit that concentrates more on a certain aesthete than a bodytype. To me, clothes that don't "fit" well are those poorly cut that don't fit as the designer had in mind.
