Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcons for H&M Designer Collection

i have a funny feeling this might be the last designer collaboration H&M does.

Having gained awareness about this collection just recently in the October GQ issue, I can't say I'm very phased. This must be the final nail in the coffin for designer collaborations with high street shops. It just doesn't embody the excitement and the hype that surrounded K.Largerfeld and V&R's collaboration with HM.

fashion people's clocks don't tick at the same speed as the normal consumer. like me, i'm already halfway through planning for S/S 09. what we might consider to be "NOW!" will probably only be perceived as "NOW" for normal consumer in a year or so.

fact is, as long as normal consumers still have an interest and those collabos bring in lots of money, the high street shops will continue doing those collabos.

i have a funny feeling this might be the last designer collaboration H&M does.

seriously ? why ?
if you want my deepest hope, i always thought it would be amazing if they could do collaborations with any young designers .... instead of high fashion goes low fashion marketing plans ...
but that is just my opinion ...
wait ... aren't they already doing this ? i think i've spotted some tshirts whose graphism is made by young starters, non ? or maybe that was a wrong feeling ....
anyway that could be good to do a sort of worldwide "project runway" h&m thing ...

but tbh, the end of X for H&M won't happen imo ... who's gonna be the next ? they went from king card KL to japanese avant-garde card CDG ... next will be ... let's say MJ !!!!

oh and please, guys, stop saying "collabos" instead of collaboration ! this has another meaning in France ....

I haven't bought anything from these collaborations before. I'm hungry for the trench coat. What can I expect in terms of materials and quality cause I don't want it to be just an average HM trench coat but with a fancy label. Can anyone comment?

Good God.
There's no way I'm going to sit in line on a cold November day in NYC to get a $200 cardigan. I'm excited for this collaboration, but I won't hazard a retail warzone just to add it to my closet.

Any New Yorkers with past h&m collaboration release exp. recommend which store may have the highest success rate? And what time should you be there? This is the frst high street+designer collaboration I plan on seeing and I'm not sure what to expect..

If you go to the H&M website, it tells you which pieces will be available at which store. For example, the $349 Show Piece Dress will only be at the 5th Ave/51st St and Lex/59th St stores. For previous collections, I have had pretty good luck at the 34th St store but I didn't wait in line to be there first thing. I just don't have that kind of patience!

Has anyone heard anything about sizing? Will it be the same H&M size range?

Also, I noticed this on the site:
H&M online shopping is currently available in the following countries:
  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Sweden
Online clothes shopping is not available in any other countries and we are unable to send clothes to countries other than those listed above.

I think you have a good chance of getting what you want at the Helsinki stores and the other stores in Finland if you arrive on time..

Can anyone comment on the quality (those who were at the Tokyo opening)?

Hmm..
Does anyone know how to tie the polkadot scarf so you could get the same look as Missy or the mannequin on the website?

actually a lot of the item are more expensive in japan than the rest of the world......

according to wwd

"The collection's tuxedo jacket for example, retails for 15,990 yen, or $162.85 at current exchange. The same item will retail for $99.00 in the U.S. and 79.90 euros ($101.66) in much of the Eurozone."

that's more than 63% more expensive!!!

that may be another reason why the collection is only in 3 states in the USA. the weak dollar means that H&M is making less of a profit. they can make more money selling the collection in japan and hong kong. :innocent:

well,as usual that's always people's ultimate direction. contrary to what some may think, the asian market has become such a reliable source of profit for fashion the last 7 years. i say that because the american market has become incredibly unpredictable since 9/11 and two wars and our playing it safe nature since then. it's really no surprise that would be a major focus, even for h&m. as you said lucy,it really is the reason they played it safe with only a few locations in only 3 states. contradictory to this endeavour with rei, they somehow didn't seem to want to take a risk.

btw,i was on yahoo japan auctions yesterday and there was already something up from this(twas admiring some tao pieces)! and their store had only been open a day!

actually things in Japan have a tendency to be more expensive, with Hong Kong prices being pretty much the same as the European ones.

That's why Japanese tourists do so much luxury shopping abroad. They save a lot, and they spend a lot. It's a win/win.

i really want the trenchcoat! hopefully it won't sell out immediately like in the past....

my mom is standing in line for me for 4 items.
Omg I'm so desperate

Yeah... there's already some up on ebay too.

i think the lines and the pushing and shoving could be much worse this year. due to the economic crisis in the US and europe.

the ebay vultures will be out in full force trying to earn extra income.

couple this with the declining supply of items that H&M provided equals a disaster in my opinion. :ninja:

the whole of stockholm is covered with h&m c'd'g ads. i'm curious about this collection, some interesting pieces on the "homme" side of it.

Wow lucy92, you got a point there...man, I gotta line up, I really really want some of these things. I can't tell if someone already mentioned it here, but could anyone tell me what the lines were like (in the U.S.? New York?) for H&M's prev. collaborations?
