Renée Zellweger to PEOPLE: 'I'm Glad Folks Think I Look Different'

Renée Zellweger has responded to Internet chatter about her appearance. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, the Oscar winner says she looks different because she is healthier and happier than ever – and she's fine with people taking notice.

"I'm glad folks think I look different! I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows," Zellweger, 45, says of the attention she received after an appearance at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards in Beverly Hills on Monday.

Calling the conversation about her appearance "silly," she says she is choosing to address it because "it seems the folks who come digging around for some nefarious truth which doesn't exist won't get off my porch until I answer the door."

"My friends say that I look peaceful. I am healthy," Zellweger continues. "For a long time I wasn't doing such a good job with that. I took on a schedule that is not realistically sustainable and didn't allow for taking care of myself. Rather than stopping to recalibrate, I kept running until I was depleted and made bad choices about how to conceal the exhaustion. I was aware of the chaos and finally chose different things."

That healthier, slower-paced lifestyle – and her happy relationship with boyfriend Doyle Bramhall – helped her turn a corner. "I did work that allows for being still, making a home, loving someone, learning new things, growing as a creative person and finally growing into myself," she says.

And if some people don't recognize the new Renée Zellweger, one thing they should understand is she's comfortable in her own skin.

"People don't know me in my 40s," says Zellweger, who prefers to lead a quiet life with Bramhall and a close circle of friends. Recently, she pitched in to help her pal and longtime publicist, Nanci Ryder, who is battling ALS, at the ALS Association Golden West Chapter's annual Walk to Defeat ALS in Los Angeles.

"People don't know me [as] healthy for a while," says Zellweger. "Perhaps I look different. Who doesn't as they get older?! Ha. But I am different. I'm happy."

There we have it, from the horse's mouth. She hasn't had any work done - end of discussion. :)

I've nothing against plastic surgery but when a transformation is THAT evident, I wish Renee would just own it and tell the truth. Because I genuinely couldn't care less what she has done. She's free to do as she pleases. It does however, insult our intelligence when we're told it's due to living a different lifestyle and a change of diet.

I couldn't agree more.

I think the blonde eyebrows are the thing that is throwing people off the most. They used to be darker and thinner. And she hasn't been in the public eye for some time and naturally she looks older

I'd say it's good work - she looks her age and natural, unlike Nicole Kidman. It's frustrating to see the criticism toward her now for having work done after years of people calling her ugly and squinty. I think she'd win over a lot of people if she said just this - people right now really admire celebrity women calling out sexism.

I say good for her. i've had reconstructive surgery on my upper thigh/ hip area which was in many ways for cosmetic reasons but also practical purposes of being able to put on most any pair of pants and Not feeling paranoid and thinking i look lopsided because of the accident which took out a major portion of my muscle when i was an infant.

I share this when it's in the appropriate context and when I AM comfortable and ready and willing to talk about.

Frankly if Renee doesn't feel like sharing what work she's had done, that's her friggin business. She can share this if/when she's ready.

She doesn't look freakish or have puffer fish face. she just looks rested. The drama is in the difference in her before and after.

I had the great misfortune of watching the CMT awards last week and the Paisley, Underwood duo made some kinda crack commenting on her ability to disguise herself. ugh i want what seemed like 5 hours of my life back.

Why all of a sudden is the media giving her flack about this? Didn't she have this procedure done ages ago?

God, look at those calves!! Even in a frumpy dress like that she still does it for me!

I don't know how is she playing mother to be. She looks like grandma.

^Seriously. I literally just googled her age. She's only 46! She looks like 60! Also is it me or did her eyes almost revert back to the way they were pre-"Life is good and I'm healthy"?

Yikes @ at the comments above! No wonder Renee resorted to plastic surgery. First they trash her for taking up plastic surgery, now when she clearly gave it a rest, she's called 'old'.
