2011 MET Costume Institute Gala (attendees): Alexander McQueen: "Savage Beauty"

Liv, Ricci, Diane, Godwin and Michelle were winners last night on all accounts for me.

Daphne is Daphne.

Kristen (Stewart) stepped out of her comfort zone and did great, and was, imo, one of the more original ones last night, just like Elle F..

that's it. all in all, too many boring dresses.

where is Stella Tennant? i can't find her...is she wearing chanel?

Yeah, where is Stella!?! Would've loved to have seen her turn up in something savagely beautiful by Lee McQ.

I like Alexa Chung's choice of Christopher Kane and short; I think it fits her style really well and he's a Brit designer.

the designer list on page 1 of this thread has been updated...

I've gone through every page of the MET ball file. And I agree with the overall consensus at how utterly boring the vast majority of outfits featured this year were.
I absolutely love how passionate we all are about this!!
Especially when the theme had so much potential! If you just think of all those incredibly dramatic McQueen dresses the attendees could have worn - it's so disappointing! Or even a plainish dress with an amazing Phillip Treacy head dress would be a nod to the McQueen-Blow aesthetic.
Not that I'd ever expect a Gwyneth Paltrow or a Claire Danes to ever wear anything directional or interesting, but still.... What a waste! If only someone wore this:

^^ Thanks for the updated list.
It's a sad situation when Madonna is one of the better dressed. I agree Raica. People take note, we are not (entirely) impressed. And our opinions matter of course.

Favourite looks are Liv Tyler and Karolina Kurkova (not that hard to narrow down)..

Maybe its just me but the colours and styles of some of the dresses remind me of the dresses Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lopez wore last year..

Mia Wasikowska and Saoirse Ronan looked older than their actual ages, IMO..

Karolina Kurkova makes doilies look so sexy

I wonder what the reaction would be if Gwyneth broke out that old black/goth number she wore to the Oscars years ago. Applause, for actually wearing classic McQueen, or scorn for wearing the same dress twice?

I think that the biggest problem with Naomi's look is her princess party hairstyle. Although the dress would look much better if it had one less layer and it just had the body hugging effect.

agreed.

my favs were Daphne, Natalia V., MCB, SJP, Karen Elson, Florence in McQueen, C, Ricci, Liv, Kurkova, Shalom, Chnel Iman, Liu, also Gisele looked great and K.Stew and Blake were actually pleasant surprises. Alexa stayed true to her style, and i respect that. i probably forgot few names, but the rest looked just awful. Kiki is my biggest disappointment.

I loved
Liu Wen
Joan
SJP
Christina Ricci
Raquel
Natalia
KK
Diane Kruger
Shalom
Chanel Iman
Daphne
Liv Tyler
Gisele B.

Special mention for Kristen Stewart and Blake Lively.

please do a search for the photo thread...it's pretty easy to find...:flower:

i was actually surprised that gwyneth did not wear mcqueen, as she has worn him before...
i think stella mccartney dressed as many people as were in mcqueen, which should not be the case...
i do applaud the designers who made custom pieces or altered pieces to go with the theme, like zac posen, olivier theyskens, and peter dundas (pucci)...
while many people looked fine, the object is to dress for the theme...
if this were the oscars, i don't think anyone would be complaining, but it's the costume institute gala...stylists and stars should have stepped up their game...
you can definitely tell who has a stylist and who doesn't...
