Roberto Cavalli S/S 2018 Milan | the Fashion Spot

Roberto Cavalli S/S 2018 Milan

I get that it's not that guy's fault that this doesn't have any character or anything since he came there from Jil Sander (correct me if I'm wrong) but come on, it would be weak even as a no-name NYFW collection. As a whole it's just a waste of time and waste of fabrics so I guess they should have kept that design team and expanded their vision. With this (lack of) aesthetic they won't be successful at all.

And here's the lesson for the future- making basic clothes with random animal prints is not enough for Cavalli.

Oh no... See, Cavalli is all about charisma, attitude, a sense of location, earthiness. This has none of that. It's like he just ran through a checklist and picked up some Vuitton by Ghesquière on the way. Completely dry and witless. This wouldn't work even for Just Cavalli.

I think it's nice. It has a bit of a NY, Ralph Lauren vibe that I like. Safe? Sure. But at least it's appealing and and has a sense of maturity. No one wants the Cavalli aesthetic anymore, this will appeal to costumers way more than whatever Dundas was doing.

Wait..

So this brand actually has a Creative Director? This is so soulless, I thought this was one of those interim collections while they look for one.

Sad but moving on.

How someone can make Cavalli boring and dull is beyond me. That takes a special set of skills.

At least Peter Dundas was shockingly tacky. This is just, forgettable.

Very sad and very boring. Those giant animal prints look like Flinstones Couture.

Very forgettable, it may be somewhat better than the tacky but at least you remember the hideousness of the bad design. I hate the prints.

Um, what?

I guarantee that if this were a brand that you had some inclination towards liking during its original designer's tenure, you wouldn't be so quick to applaud a new designer's complete and utter disregard for or lack of understanding about what that designer and the brand they built represent.

Furthermore, I'm never quite sure from your assertions that "no one wants (insert designer's look here) anymore" what it is that you think happens to said designer's clientele. Cavalli flew under the radar for many, many years before breaking through in the late 90s/early 00s and having a moment as a leader of where fashion was. He had a cult following of people who knew of him and liked what he did prior to that, and that's just as much the case after that moment ends. His clients didn't just abandon their style because it wasn't trendy or leading the pack anymore. Yes, Roberto needed to retire and the house needed someone to prune the hedges. It didn't however, need someone to uproot them and toss them to the curb for the sake of making a parking lot.

Not trying to be antagonistic here mind you. I just think it's important to remember that simply because a brand never meant squat to you doesn't mean it never meant squat to anybody else. I mean, no one would be cheering if Zac Posen took over Yohji Yamamoto and did away with every ounce of the brand's identity save for the color black, would they?

Boring, dry and bad. The dresses are not even good...
I like when Cavalli is Cavalli. This brand has no point to exist if it is to do things like that.
This looks like an embarrassing Escada show.

They should call back Eva Cavalli. They need someone who will be able to keep the spirit of the house intact...Even if it's under a new creative director. Eva is needed.

The question is, who is this customer you are talking about? The people who cares about Cavalli wants the Cavalli look. Maybe an updated version of it, but still it needs to be Cavalli.

The Cavalli clientele is really particular. It's not Philipp Plein...
Cavalli is excessive but with a lot of artistry and craftmanship. I find Balmain more tacky than Cavalli...

I feel like if they continues like this, Cavalli will end-up like Gianfranco Ferre.

Cavalli is not Cavalli anymore. Last good Cavalli was in 2015 or 2014. Aslo with Dundas come back they didn't succseed the revival. Dundas went, Cavalli has no chance for revival , imo.
One more show-collection like this one and they will be "dead", they are "dead" yet... so pity.

Dundas would have lasted a while if he had brought the Pucci aesthetic.

Agreed. His interpetation of Cavalli was far too literal. It almost verged on a costume parody. It was all so heavy and overdone. There has to be an ease to it. It all felt forced.

If Roberto Cavalli still designed for the house he could have easily attained a large younger customer and client base. Imagine Rhianna, Katy Perry, Zendaya, and all the young celebrities wearing his clothes? Christina Aguliera's feather dress is ICONIC.
