Like athletes, apparently models need strong knees... and risk injury.

Frockwriter: Just how dangerous are those skyscraper heels? That’s a question begging to be asked following the news that a knee injury which kept Abbey Lee Kershaw out of New York Fashion Week now dictates that she will skip the season altogether. After being given the all-clear by a doctor to travel to the Milan and Paris legs of FW0910, Kershaw arrived in Milan for castings but lasted a day, unable to negotiate walking in the season's footwear, Chic Management director Kathy Ward told frockwriter. Noted Ward, “She flew to Milan, went to some castings, but she wasn’t ready to walk in high-heeled shoes”.
...
According to Ward, Kershaw has had a longstanding problem with her knee ligaments and made the decision to skip New York Fashion Week after an arthroscopic investigation just after Christmas revealed bone fragments.

According to Ward, Kershaw received medical advice that she would be OK to pick up the season at the midway point.

One wonders if Kershaw's orthopedic specialist has sighted some of the extreme footwear in which models have recently been expected to walk - prompting numerous stumbles already this season, notably Monika Jagaciak's spectacular stack in New York.

Given how much publicity the moment's extreme footwear fad has enjoyed - with numerous doctors weighing in on the health risks - it seems surprising that they were not across the story.

Under the circumstances, one has to assume that Kershaw’s catwalk stumble at New York’s Rodarte show last September – not to mention her collapse at the Alexander McQueen show several weeks later, due to a restrictive corset – did not help the situation.

“It could have exacerbated the situation – possibly, I don’t know for sure” noted Ward.

“She hasn’t had a full knee reconstruction - but she needs to rest and get strong again before doing anything else” Ward added. “She’s back in New York. She’ll have to take the season off”.

Oh I totally missed that actually....I'll wait for the pics then :p

* Oh no, I feel sorry for the girl who was crying... But it doesn't seem she was suffering, maybe her eyes were bothered by the air conditioning...

comment on WSJ On the Runway which picked up the story.

I worked backstage at the Jil Sander show. The reason Aug***e was in tears was because the shoes were extremely uncomfortable and high. She had broken her foot a while back and she had a bad cramp in one of her feet whilst walking on the catwalk. She was scared that she would fall because of the high and uncomfortable shoes. I can imagine the the pain and the fear of falling made her cry.

She cried with so much discipline and courage, it impressed me. So beautiful.

Now we have to hope that everyone doesn't want beautiful crying models.

"Over the weekend, while stuck to our beloved iPhone to keep up with all the Tweets from all the editors in Milan, we were shocked to see that The New York Time’s The Moment Twitter wrote about a model crying on the runway, saying “At Jil Sander watching a model with tears running down her face. An allergic reaction to the makeup or to those orange wedges?”
Her name is Auguste Abeliunaite, but she sometime uses Tomasuite as her last name. She also walked in Prada, Les Copains, Pringle of Scotland, and Burberry, a great season for a newer girl.
Pierre Rougier, Jil Sander’s U.S. publicist, denied the model crying to the Wall Street Journal’s Heard on the Runway, saying he couldn’t see it in pictures or video.

We’re going to pretend that she was crying out of joy, rather than pain from her shoes or the flash from the photographers. Either way, we’ll remember her."

Oh geez, that's really sad. Considering that ALK was out getting knee surgery from the shoes last season and she''d already broken her foot, her tears are very understandable.
Nobody looks that miserable from 'makeup'.

Also Natasha Poly goes wrong at two Shows
Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2007... she follows Freja instead went the other way(and Maryna's face like "WTF!!! She went wrong? or Am I wrong?")

Followup from WSJ:
Heard on the Runway got a call this morning from Ms. Abeliunate’s agent Piero Piazzi, who runs the agency Women Model Management in Milan. Ms. Abeliunate’s tears had nothing to do with an emotional issue or pain caused by excessively high heels. “She has delicate eyes,” said Mr. Piazzi. “We were laughing with the casting director after the show.”
...

As for why she looked so sad the agent explained thatthe girls of the east have sad eyes in general.” He confirmed that Ms. Abeliunaite commented on the Heard on the Runway blog, writing “There wasnt any small shoes or my emocional (sic) problems!!!! The lights was very strong and cameras was flashing all the time. My eyes are very sensitive thats why i was crying.”

Great that Milan was a big success for her!
