The 100 Movie Challenge (2012)

^Ahh... how could I have forgotten about Ever After and North & South??? They are two of my favorites! Ever After is probably my favorite Drew Barrymore film ever, it's just so wonderful.

31. The girl with dragon tattoo - i've just finished watching it, it was very good, both Daniel & Rooney as well as the rest of the cast did a great job. And this is off-topic but I could not get over how much Stellan & his son Alex resemble each other

It's very interesting. I used to dance, so I'm very much into this subject, but I'm more into more classic dances like ballet, modern jazz and also flamenco, I'm not a big fan of modern/contemporary dance so I wasn't too familiar nor was a fan of Pina, which is why I wasn't as moved as many people were. There are some very beautiful moments though, and beautiful dances and settings.
The 3D effect was quite important, sometimes I felt like I was at a theater seeing it live, but in many angles and with zoom possibility, which was really cool! :D There are also some very nice songs (even Caetano Veloso's Leãozinho :P). It was a nice way to get to know a little more about her work, although I still fail to see the beauty in many movements and ways of expression present in her dance genre.

I didn't know it was in 3D, I must've watched the regular version, ugh!:lol:

You know, I think having a background of dancing (especially the classical kind) must influence the perception of the film.. or maybe in my case, being completely ignorant on the subject just "helped" me dive straight into it.. cause I was so unfamiliar with it and the amount of emotion it involves.. I was impressed in no time . I just found beautiful how modernity in all its expressions (morality, popular culture, aesthetics, etc) is encapsulated with such ease by those dancers. But then I feel like it's got a lot to do with the way Wim films.. I was not familiar with Pina or dance in general but I was with Yohji and Buena Vista Social Club before I watched his documentaries on them and I feel like he always does such a superb work even if you can tell he's no expert on the field, like I remember loving Buena Vista Social Club and when he did his documentary, I was .. smitten.. he added so many colors and dimensions to their art.. and same for Yohji Yamamoto.. I think he finds a human quality (integrity in the case of Yohji) and explores their work through that vein so ultimately it's not so much about the actual work but the mind of the creator.. in that aspect, I did resent Pina's absence at moments, the documentary feels incomplete without her.

Yeah, I resented her absence too. It seemed to me that the scenes with her which the dancers also watched (on that screen "inside" the screen) were initially supposed to be "regular" scenes, but he decided to put them in another perspective after her death... Just my feeling though, I haven't really read much about it. In the end it's more a beautiful homage than a documentary.
