The 100 Movie Challenge (2012)

You watched this awhile ago, but what did you think of it?

I need to get into more silent films, but I just can never bring myself to for some reason. I've pretty much seen all the "important" silent comedies, but the dramas are another story for me.

I liked it! It's slightly longish, but my 11 year old son watched it with me, and it held his attention (he loves Chaplin though). The film techniques are pretty cool and the story is engaging, while very sad, but the "fantasy" ending lightens things up to a degree, if you don't take it for harsh sarcasm. Anyhow, definitely worth watching. If you're looking for silent dramas, "Man with a Movie Camera", "Metropolis", "The Passion of Joan of Arc", "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "Nosferatu" are all good as well. :flower:

28. In the Name of the Father (Ireland, UK, 1993)

31. Trois couleurs: Bleu (France, Poland, 1993)
32. Trzy kolory: Bialy (France, Poland, 1994)

I haven't updated this list for a while and I know I've seen more films than mentioned here - but I really can't remember which.

23. Vera Drake | A very interesting movie about the subject, if it doesn't change your mind, it will at least help to understand a bit of the other side of the coin.
24. To Rome With Love | I was expecting so much of the movie, but it disappointed me. The stories sounded forced. Some of the actors are great, but others just don't deliver. Woody Allen's story is clearly the best, but I wouldn't recommend this one.
25. Anna | Fun, quite modern for the time it was made, Anna and Brialy are such a good match! Not to mention the amazing apparitions of Serge & Marianne Faithfull.

On a side note, so ashamed some of you have already finished the Challenge and I've only accomplished 1/4 of it. :ninja::lol:

How was Stand By Me Not Plain Jane?

Hi, :flower: I thought it was very good; it's a little dated, but it holds up well since it's set in the past. We watched it with our son who is about the age of the main characters in the film, so that added something to the experience. The kids in the film all give remarkable performances imo (it was sad to see River Phoenix again - even then he showed massive potential). Plus, I love that the film is funny yet it manages to make viewers think about personality, mortality and humanity. The 50s music is great. It's worth watching; it is probably one of the better film adaptations of any Stephen King story/book.

Tinetush - what did you think of Die Welle (Germany, 2008)? I watched it and thought the acting was very powerful and the storyline shocking. Good film imo.

Really recommend Cairo Time.... reminded me a little of Before Sunrise/Before Sunset but more mature I guess.

After Sweetgrass and The Turin Horse, you think you can put up with all kinds of ultra steady, nothingness-of-life films but then you get to the Design Trilogy (which is actually about something) and just want to kill someone .. I'm excluding Urbanized as it's so well-made and really makes you think about the challenges of urbanization but Helvetica and Objectified, unless you're a total stranger to industrial design and typography, they're painful.. and it's 100% Hustwit's approach, he just wants to bring the enthusiasm/ego of creators to light and make it contagious and the result is talented guy #1 telling you what he does, and telling you what he does again, and then guy #2 telling you what he does and how identical it is to what guy #1 does.

Thankfully, the third and last installment of the series is more promising when it comes to Hustwit's future projects.

When you think you're ready for the 3-hour Griffith melodramas, you should definitely try Way Down East. I watched it twice in a row because... I was just too impressed.
