When you think you're ready for the 3-hour Griffith melodramas, you should definitely try Way Down East. I watched it twice in a row because... I was just too impressed.

To be honest I'm kind of afraid to watch the Griffith epics. I remember that I took a class where we had to read about The Birth of a Nation, and the way this author described it made it sound like the most thrilling movie ever. Then when we watched pieces of it it was just so... not what I was expecting. Don't even get me started on Intolerance!

I was thinking of starting with Broken Blossoms to ease into Griffith, but I'll look into your suggestion as well.

Hahaha, I have my problems sitting through Intolerance as well, especially the Babylon segment. Lillian Gish rocking the cradle may be the most powerful image on Griffith's filmography, though. It's just so haunting.

I think you should try watching The Birth of a Nation from beginning to end. It is a great film with truly moving moments (or maybe I'm too easy). There is the battle scene which is impressive but can get a little tedious, but... it is a great movie overall, even with all the KKK controversy.

And, yes, I believe Broken Blossoms is a very good starting point. It is Griffith's most delicate film. And it's much shorter than his usual after TBOAN! Orphans of the Storm is a nice one too.

I also like The Battle of the Sexes, one of his last movies. It is very interesting to note the differences between Griffith's genuinely American melodrama movie and Murnau's European way in his Sunrise, as both treat basically about the same theme: fidelity, the lack of it, and diabolic women.

I think shorts count, as well as movies you've rewatched this year, but if you see the same movie more than once this year, it only counts as one. ^_^

^ wow, then I should add Harry Potter series! I watched it twice this year

I think it depends how you define a short, truthfully I put them on my list as long as they're over 40 minutes.

 I've been keeping a separate list of short films that I've seen this year to avoid "clutter." I kept a list for fun on another website last year and I included 7 minute long Looney Tunes cartoons for some reason, skewing my results drastically.

Battleship Potemkin is a must - the Soviets drew a fair bit on Griffith's experiments, but Eisenstein really took it to a new level.

Oh, I won't count shorts or rewatches then. Watching 100 new feature films in 6 months will be much more challenging for me. ^_^

71. The Amazing Spider-Man [****] > Better than the first Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. Let's wait and see if the second movie can beat Spider-Man 2, one of the best super-heroes flicks I watched along with The Dark Knight.
72. War of the Buttons [****] > The new frech version. Almost an overdose of sweetness.
73. Little White Lies [*****] > So witty! I laughed so much with it and didn't expect the end. A smart movie about hipocrisy.
74. On the Road [***] > Quite disappointed. The women only talked about sex and men, they barely had a character of their own.
75. The Ides of March [***] > It didn't quite work as an allegory or criticism for Obama's election imo. And it has such moralistic undertones. :innocent:
76. Tell No One [**] > Dull and full of stupid twists and turns. Too forced.

77. The Dark Knight Rises [****] > Somewhat disappointed but it's hard to top Heath Ledger's Joker.
78. The Life of Fish [****] > Such a delicate bittersweet movie! Just lovely.
79. Kick-*** [****] > I just laughed so hard with this one!
80. La Chance de Ma Vie [****] > I love french romantic comedies, they are much more original and less predictable!

Tinetush - what did you think of Die Welle (Germany, 2008)? I watched it and thought the acting was very powerful and the storyline shocking. Good film imo.
Sorry I completely missed your post. But yeah I really liked it too. It was a nice surprise as I just happened to catch it on the Telly. I really like it when lesser known films are shown, I like to be surprised. But I agree the acting was splendid, and the story was compelling ^_^

Haven't seen many films lately. Have to admit that all of my time spent in front of the Telly is used for watching the Olympics.
