The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #2

I didn't start out wanting to buy anything this season, but I ended up with:

- one white silk dress from Vanessa Bruno
- one pair of black ballet flats from Topshop
- one pair of beige and black two-toned flats from Massimo Dutti
- one black tie-neck blouse blouse from Marc by Marc Jacobs
- one black leather clutch from Kate Spade
- one navy silk shirt from Massimo Dutti

That's practically a capsule wardrobe already! I think I'm making for not shopping much at the beginning of the year, and I need to stoppppppppp.

The promise of 10x the points got me to Nordstrom's last night ... bought a couple of black tops for layering to replace the one that bit the dust last fall. Let's see if I can find pix ... nope.

One is a cap-sleeve top with a ruffle front, but the ruffles are very flat across the front, so they don't enhance what doesn't need enhancing ;) On sale too. The other is 3/4 sleeve, and the great thing about it is that the neckline is very close-fitting so that when you put something else on top, it doesn't gap. I don't know exactly how they did it, but the design is outstanding (that one is Nic + Zoe).

Awhile back I got a couple of Sleeptops, which I was thrilled to get ... I had one I'd worn out, but didn't want to toss till I could replace. The company has apparently had some difficulties, so I wasn't able to get any from my original source.

So not very thrilling buys, just extremely practical ...

My plans for the Autumn/Winter season is mostly functional. I'm moving soon to a colder and snowier clime, and I need to get more cold-weather clothes.

Anyway, here's my list:
the x = procured item
the (+) = unplanned purchase
the - = still searching

x short booties (Rachel Comey Mars boot)
x sweaters (all from thrift)
x winter coat (all from thrift)
(+ leather sandals from Madewell)
(+ Rachel Comey Agronomist dress)
- black long sleeve top
- black skinny jeans
- silk shirt in neutral
- striped Breton-style top

michele

I found out Michele is discontinuing 12 mm bands, so it's now or never ... I ordered these ... saddle double wrap, black alligator, and black grosgrain ...

And with that, I am finished ...

This thread used to be hopping! Maybe now that we're emerging from the recession (so they say), it's not so inspiring to be minimal!

I've become much better at not acting on impulse and resisting good deals, at least in terms of browsing/buying ratio. I can enter a store without buying a thing, and sadly, that's rather a new situation for me. That said, I still do so much internet browsing that I always end up finding at least a thing or two that want and then get. Especially during this sale season.

Maybe the thing to do is not to do so much browsing, but I kinda love to go around and look at pretty things, pick them up and put them back down, like a magpie.

^ I suspect that those of us who were doing minimal before the recession have been doing even less during it ...

nordstrom

My hand-knit gloves developed a hole, so bought these to wear while I'm getting them repaired ... anyone else making unplanned purchases based on things wearing out or needing repair?

^I'm in a desperate, almost disconsolate search for two or three new pairs of trousers, given that some of the ones I'm wearing now are one or two sizes too big and ill-fitting (I've lost 13 pounds in the last six months), but finding the perfect pair is proving to be terribly difficult. :glare:

^ Have you tried having an existing pair tailored?

I really like the fit of Helmut Lang pants (+ tailoring) for me, but we may be shaped nothing alike ... you might trying using tFS to get some brand recommendations to point you in the right direction. Have you tried the labels you already own?

What about the Gap's new perfect black pants--anyone tried those? :innocent: I haven't, but considered it ... so far I haven't been feeling the need for another pair. My existing are Dries, which are OK after being tailored ...

Gap and Zara are my cheap sources for trousers.

Kookai and Comptoir des Cotonniers are also worth trying if the brands are available in your countries.

BUT I'm still having the same trouble as Nemova. I really need new trousers yet I can't find the slim/skinny trouser cut I like.

Oh, forgot Uniqlo! Will check.

wow, i haven't posted here in ages, just reading. i'm currently going through a somewhat wardrobe-change, making it simpler. focusing on expensive basics and good fabrics, primarily getting rick owens, ann d, damir doma - trying to keep it all-black, with some grey and white. i recently read some articles and books on zen-buddhism, which basically means that everything has to be esthetically beautiful yet practical / functional.. now, my question is, is it a good idea to invest in black items or should i opt for some color too? out of experience, i know i tend to grow tired of colors, but all-black might be a bit boring (..or depressing).

I go for grey a lot and some cream - black is quite strong, especially all the time, maybe you can incorporate some dark grey?

I like navy - the same kind of sober mood you get from black, goes with anything, suits most occasions, but not too austere. Very hard to find nice things in navy though, or even the right shade of navy.

Grey is beautiful too, and there are so many hues to choose from; taupe is also excellent, still very neutral but interesting to the eye.

Nice to see you!

How do you feel when you wear black? What's your astrological sign/element? Me, I like color, but maybe it's not you. Are you still wearing some natural leather? That could function as a 'color' too ...

I really wanted those perfect Gap pants to fit me, but wasn't able to make any of them work. I tried on every single style, too  I also got my hopes up for that Levi's Curve ID line, only to be disappointed when I tried them on. I guess I'm not in the 95% of women that will fit into/be flattered by the Levi's. Boo.

ta-ta, do you have your pants tailored extensively? I think tailoring may be the way to go, but don't know if the alterations I need are possible or worth the cost.

ta-ta, in general i feel 'strong' and comfortable. i mostly wear black with some navy and grey, aswell as the occasional blue - until recently ive hold on to the plaid flannels aswell, but im getting bored. no light colors though, except the occasional white tee
