The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #2

Btw, it is not that "I have to buy something feeling". I just hate having to be repsonsible about my money, and then I feel sooooooo sorry for myself  I'm pretty good at not shopping when there isn't anything I want. Unfortunatly, ATM, there is a lot of things that I want.

Aldn, I feel your pain about public transportation. I do a lot of walking to get around, and it really takes a toll on the shoes! I've griped about this before on here so I'll cut myself short this time, but the weather where I live (rain, rain, rain--it even rained all day and night yesterday, in the middle of our summer!) really limits the footwear for those who spend time outside walking to work/class/errands. I've found that Frye boots save my life about 9-10 months out of the year; although they're not very dressy, most of them polish up nicely, are very durable and comfortable, and Frye makes a good waterproofing polish you can put on the leather periodically. Of course, their style is not for everybody.

.

Fryes + a cobbler =>> decades of walking

Betinapple, it's a nice cardigan but in the pic it looks a bit boxy... I think that's always a bit of a problem with this kind of cardigans. Maybe if you try a size smaller it could work. I think you have a very nice curvy body that you should show off. It's hard to tell from the pic but I think it could make you look too "straight". But do try it on in a smaller size. What was your feeling about it?

I agree ... plenty of time to wear sweaters like this when you're a grandma

And now I will tell you a secret ... lots of my cardigans won't button all the way up properly. I don't let that stand in my way, since I'm only going to button the ones at the bottom anyway.

Shoes, shoes, shoes... You know, I used to be a person who bought a lot of tops, dresses and skirts and then ended up with the "nothing to wear" feeling because I didn't have any nice shoes to go with them. I used to wear black shoes all the time, one pair in the summer and a warmer pair in the winter. Now when I see those people with black shoes all the time I feel it's such a dull look. (Not on everyone, but black shoes with a floral summer dress look weird to me in most cases).

So, while I've become really good in limiting myself when it comes to buying tops, skirts and dresses I am now a passionate shoe fan. And dressing has become so much easier ever since! Shoes are the coolest thing on earth and I think it's the only item that I don't really count when I try to have a small wardrobe. Cause a nice collection of shoes is what makes everything else work, in my opinion.

And now I'm going to tell you something... I ordered myself a pair of shoes online, even if I told you two weeks ago that I won't buy shoes online again... :D But I've seen a pair that... well... it looks so perfect for fall! And I really need a pair of fall shoes. I ordered them at a store with a good return policy so I think it should be okay. And it's a pair of booties and I have made the experience that for me, it's so much easier to find a pair of booties or boots that fit than a pair of sandals or pumps. So, forget my rules, I broke them

I'll post a picture when they arrive AND fit

Completely agree about shoes' importance.

I had a doctor prescribe me orthotics, and I mentioned this to my mother, who said, "I don't think he understands how important shoes are to you." She was right ... the orthotics are in a drawer :innocent: For one thing, you were supposed to remove certain shoes' insoles in order to put them in. I made a comment to him, I forget what I said, but to the effect that I would have a problem doing damage to the shoes like that. He acted all offended

Most men don't have the relationship to shoes that we do, and a lot of men have 3 or 4 pairs of shoes. I am passionate about shoes, so I consider the 20 pairs I have to be quite conservative. (For comparison purposes, Imelda had 2700 :P)

To me, shoes are the best way to make a statement if you work in a business (vs creative) environment and want to have a compact wardrobe. Hey, they may be the best way to make a statement in any environment. And they sure are fun :woot:

So bloomingdales.com has fryes for 60 bucks.... i ordered a pair. crossing my fingers they fit!

RedandNavy Ha, yeah, I always say I won't buy shoes (or certain other items) online either, but really, I know there will be exceptions... :innocent: Hope your booties will fit well!

Betinapple I agree with the others about the cardigan, it's really expensive for something that doesn't fit perfectly (and I also relate to loving an item that is just so awesome... except when I try it on, argh). Although ta-ta's tip about not buttoning all the way is worth considering too.

ta-ta I think 20 pairs is really not a lot nowadays, especially when they've all been chosen with care and get worn.

I've been having a dreadful time lately (my sweet little cat of 13 years died on Monday ), and it's brought with it a case of Omg I've nothing to wear!, combined with a general dislike of my looks and how the clothes I have look on me. Of course I know it's not really to do with the clothes (or body) that I do or do not have, so I just try my best to ignore it and wear what I wore before - after all, I had no problem with them just a week ago. And luckily I have no idea as to what I would want to be wearing instead, so I can't run out and make silly purchases. :P

Recent (non-silly!) purchases:
  • white tank top to replace the one ruined by that pesky Zara cardigan (getting dressed without it was becoming a little difficult)
  • white tennis shoes/plimsolls to replace last summer's pair that used to fit fine but are suddenly just a little too tight for comfort this year
  • blue cotton Monsoon blouse (second-hand; this was on my summer list)

SO EXCITED!!!!! :woot: I got my shoes and my bag and I'm so so so happy! The shoes are a mustard pair of Acne pistol short boots. They fit PERFECTLY and they are great for me! I have a lot of very classic items in my fall / winter wardrobe (like navy cashmere turtle necks and grey wool cardigans and these boots are THE item that make my other items cool classic instead of boring classic. So so so cool and they fit with every single fall/winter wardrobe item I own! And the leather is a dream...

The bag is a MbMJ. It's not super exciting but very classic and versatile and will serve me well as a work bag AND as a diaper bag :P And it goes well with my shoes, too

Now this was it with my purchases. I'll have to save in the coming months cause the daycare costs for my children are getting higher... But honestly, that's okay. I have spent very wisely during the last few months and now I feel ready for a "no-spending" season. I'll need a pair of jeans sooner or later but I guess I will be able to afford them. Other than that I'll probably have to wait till Christmas - but I have a good wardrobe till then!! I feel very pleased with my purchase strategy

elle, so sorry about your cat

Feet are so strange ... they do get bigger. In high school I wore a 7, and now it appears I wear an 8.5 (recently up from 8).

Nice purchases, RedandNavy, especially the boots! They do look perfect.

I didn't know Frye made ballets! Someone must try them

My favorite way to buy shoes at a distance is from a site that also has a brick-and-mortar store where I can return them. Even better if the store can order them for you, but you have to make sure they don't fool around (while the shoe sells out). Lately I've been ordering my size plus the two sizes around it and picking my favorite.

barneys.com has free shipping on all orders, and I get free shipping with my rewards level + Nordstrom Mod card (which is a debit card--just the best thing).

With the shoes I just got, I found them on the website, and they had an 8.5. But I wanted them shipped to the store because they required a signature. First I looked at nordstrom.com, and they had only a different colorway that I didn't want. I called someone I know at a local store, and she searched the internal system to make sure they didn't have them (that would have gotten me points). They didn't, so I called Barneys. They searched their system, and actually they had more sizes. She got my preferred size from Las Vegas (hopefully no sales tax), and they'll be shipped to the store, where I can return them on the spot if need be (but there better not be need!! :D).

I really need to work on getting more solid pieces. I would hate to be cliche and say that I have nothing to wear, but I think I have hit a personal rock bottom. I recently cleaned out my wardrobe - like, hardcore cleaned out - and I swear, there is nothing left. I have one decent pair of jeans left (which is a staple for me), no skirts, no shorts of an acceptable length (two pairs of short shorts), one extremely short black dress, a nice sundress, two dressier dresses, no nice blouses, an abundance of useless tees and tank tops I truly hate and two pairs of nice shoes. It's odd that I suddenly have so many dresses in comparison to everything else since I don't wear them all that much. Obviously I will need new back to school clothes (I'm only fifteen), but I'm worried I won't find anything that I truly like. I don't want to buy things I'm never going to wear, but I really, desperately need new clothes. I'm just very nervous to shop... Then, if I do spot something I like, it's too expensive or I'm worried that it won't fit. For some reason, I have a lot of anxiety over this whole thing, which is odd. I love fashion and clothes, I just want things to work out well and I think I'm over-thinking it all.

RedandNavy, I love your bag. It's a really nice color and sizable enough to be versatile. Those boots look really lovely, too.

aldn - fingers crossed on your new Fryes! I just got insoles for some harness boots that were too roomy, and they fit much better now.

elle - so sorry about your cat! It is hard to lose a beloved pet

redandnavy - Love, love, LOVE those Acne boots!

betinapple - Have you tried Banana Republic or White House Black Market (two U.S. stores - not sure of their shipping policies overseas)? They have lots of little faux-Chanel boucle sweaters and jackets. I know, because I've bought a few on sale from them both recently.

I've tried some of last year's Frye ballet flats, and I find that for my narrow, flat feet that they're too short in the toes and too wide through the rest of the shoe. Granted, they will probably fit many others' feet like a, umm, glove. I found their last for their ballet flats to be significantly different from the lasts for their heels/oxfords/boots, as all those other styles fit me great, just not the ballet flats. If you try the ballet flats, make sure you order them from a place with free returns I would advise! (And, yes, I am obsessed with Frye. :P)

Thanks everyone for the nice words about my new shoes and my bag!! I am still so excited about the shoes... I got up this morning and first thing I did was running to my shoes :woot::heart: Haha! I haven't been this excited with a purchase for a long time. But in general I feel that recently I have bought some pieces that make the wardrobe work and that really fill out holes in my closet. That's a great feeling... I want more cardigans, more tees, more blouses, more dresses of course, but it feels like I can live without them. But I really needed a bag that can carry documents (I tend to prefer smaller sizes usually but sometimes I need to carry something bigger). And I needed a heeled shoe that works in cooler weather and the Acne boot will do just that.

Elle: I am very sorry about your cat, too!! I have lost my cat some years ago, it's so sad... Cats are such great animals with so much personality... I feel for you!

Shoestring: I often have the problem with Ballerinas that they are too wide in the middle and too narrow in the front...

Shoe sizes: I actually used to wear a IT 38 and now I wear IT 36.5 :P Kind of strange...

Thanks, my feet are fairly 'normal' in width (its the length that is little!!). I'm tempted to order a pair, especially if they're going to last a while.

I'm the complete opposite of you! I have huge feet (size 11 US). I've been thinking a lot about what I should save up for and I think I need to find a good pair of shoes. I have a decent pair of flats, so I'm not sure what I should go for. I guess I'll just have to be on the look out for something that will fit my wardrobe.

I do not think it is grandma-ish though  I've had my girlfriend find it for me in the smaller size. Hope that'll help. The SA at the Store said that they run qyite big. I usually do not button my cardis at all, but when it is so expensive I want to be sure that i CAN wear it closed

I agrree that the fit isn't the best. I'm new into knitted stuff and I loooooove that cardigan. I will try the smaller size.

thx for the tip  I couldn't find any chanel-ish jackets in any of the shops though. Also, when ordering from outside of the EU I have to pay taxes and it wont be as inexpensive after all.

Elle: so sorry about your cat. Mine passed away several years ago, so I really sympathize.

RedandNavy: lovely shoes and bag!

I just finished 'purging' my shoes wardrobe today, tossing and giving away all that I never wear / un-me / unconfortable on my feet.

I still left with 20+ shoes though, all are comfy and looks nice on my feet. I was thinking that the number was excessive still, so glad to know that ta-ta has around the same number of shoes...

I still need one nude pump for 2nd semester of 2011, and then I am done.

I did manage to find black pumps as I planned for 1st semester as I posted before, although I cheat and get 2 instead of 1 : bowed ferragamo in black suede and sergio rossi in black calf. Hopefully the additional 1 is justifiable since we have so much rain lately and I don't wanna ruin my suede one (I got it first).

Yesterday my bag had its first day out as a diaper bag, today it had its first day as a work bag. I am glad to say it worked very well for both occassions and fitted both my off-duty and my business outfit

Girls, I really need your advice on something. I'm going to Florence for a week and I need to have a carry-all bag with me. I usually use my Mulberry Bayswater, but I can't figure out if I'm asking for trouble bringing it? I do not know how bad pick-pockets can be in Florence. We're staying at a hotel outside of the city, and regarding that I'm not worried, but we will be seeing the city a couple of times. So.. do you think it is a bad idea bringing such an expensive bag? It is the only big bag which can be closed good, that I have. Also, I'm vain () and can't imagine walking around with a random not nice bag all week. I know. Stupid.
