Haha, Betinapple, I have to tell you how I "solved" the problem when I visited Florence at the age of 15... I had heard about the pick-pocketing and had the glorious idea to put my money in to my socks  Yes, I know...... Well, the first time when I had to pay something (at a street vendor) I realised that taking your money out of your socks is maybe a bit... strange. I guess whole Florence was watching me, including all pick-pockets (who probably decided they didn't want any money smelling like swiss cheese...)

Honestly, I doubt the pick-pockets in Florence recognize a Mulberry. I think it can even be an advantage if you dress elegantly with a good bag since you'll look less like a tourist. Watch it well, carry it with confidence and go for it. My opinion but with no guarantee of course. (A pretty sure method in such cases is to carry your wallet in a plastic bag from a local super market. But it's not a very elegant solution.)

HAVE FUN in Florence! When are you leaving?

 I've heard of people keeping money in their bra but never in their socks!! I guess it is a good way of not having your cash stolen.

My main advice for avoiding getting pick pocketed is to be constantly aware and doing things like closing your bag properly, not keeping your wallet on your table whilst you eat etc. I always keep anything valuable in the inside zip up pocket in my bag so its harder for someone to dip in and out your bag and taking something. I shouldn't think a Mulberry would attract too much attention as it is not heavily logoed etc. Enjoy Florence :flower:

Well, nowadays I'd rather have my cash stolen than being caught taking it out of my socks

@Redandnavy: lol: I've heard about that trick before, but I do not plan on wearing socks :b Good advice. I think that the thing about NOT looking like a tourist will work too. I'm leaving saturday

@Chanel: good advice. I'm ALWAYS aware - I'm soooo paranoid.

Same, I'm originally from the countryside in England but moved to London for uni, and my friends all make fun of me for how paranoid I am about keeping my bag safe!

Has anyone else notice that on netaporter they've just started stocking a few Coach Classics handbags? Coach is normally really not my thing but I am in love with this one http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/106180 Its not too bad price wide compared to other designer bags, but is still kind of out my price range.

Betinapple:
Socks is definitely a new one! As was said, I wouldn't wear them either lol. Just don't take out more than you can afford to have stolen in any one trip, but don't be so paranoid you forget to enjoy yourself either. The pickpockets are really clever but you can be too. Just don't leave your bag on the floor where you can't see it, even during meals.

You can get a travel belt thingie (mine goes under clothes) and keep most of your cash there, and just a bill (such as $20) and your card in your bag ...

looks like a lot of fashion people are paranoid. i know i am.

@Chanel: my girlfriends laugh at me too, because I take my bag with me from the table, when I leave to get salad e.g. at a restaurant

@Womanolo
: I'm actually not bringing that much cash. My boyfriend got a lot of euros for his birthday, so I'm just bringing my card.

@ta-ta: thats a good idea. I just have no idea whereas to get one, and I do not have enough time to order one online. also, I always wear dresses, so it makes it a bit difficult :D

@Aldn: I am sooooo paranoid. I've always been. Even before I started buying expensive things.

it's mostly if i'm on the bus at night or really really early in the morning or if i'm walking about in a neighborhood i'm not fond of.

I got mine at REI, don't know if they are international. It was hot, so I was wearing loose fitting clothes. It is nude and made of fairly delicate material.

I am not paranoid, but I was going to New Orleans post-Katrina by myself when I bought it. My hairstylist at the time had family from there, and made me swear I would buy pepper spray. There were a couple times I was glad to have it ...

I think you are better off if you're not afraid. I know how to step up my intimidation factor if need be

@Aldn: I do it if I walk in a crowded area or in the capital of Denmark. In my own town I'm very relavxed about it.

@Ta-ta: hm, no clue, but I'm leaving tomorrow, so. I know it if it will be needed another time. Then I just have to solve the dress problem  And it is true that you need to walk with confidence. We're travelling with family, my boyfriend, my father in law and his brother in law, which are all big men, so I'm not scared. I always wear a hairspray in my bag, because I witnessed a fight last year. Pepperspray isn't legal in Denmark, but I guess hairspray in your eyes isn't nice either.

Girls, I really need your advice on something. I'm going to Florence for a week and I need to have a carry-all bag with me. I usually use my Mulberry Bayswater, but I can't figure out if I'm asking for trouble bringing it? I do not know how bad pick-pockets can be in Florence. We're staying at a hotel outside of the city, and regarding that I'm not worried, but we will be seeing the city a couple of times. So.. do you think it is a bad idea bringing such an expensive bag? It is the only big bag which can be closed good, that I have. Also, I'm vain () and can't imagine walking around with a random not nice bag all week. I know. Stupid.

This is maybe not helpful advice, but I have a (rep) hermes jypsiere bag. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get in and out of quickly, and shuts up like a clam when you close and buckle it. The leather is too tough to be cut through by a pickpocket. I find it to be a nice, secure messenger option when traveling. However, the real thing costs A LOT, and not everyone wants to own a rep. Just a thought. :flower:

^ I admire your patience ... I don't have what it takes to carry a bag that's hard to get into  I liked the PS1, but when I saw how the straps worked, I said no way :innocent: If I lived in NYC, I might have to revisit this topic ... right now I'm carrying an open-top straw bag.

@Shoe: thx for the tip  I brought my bayswater and it worked out fine in both Florenze and Zürich.

@Ta-ta: At home, in Denmark I'm not that worried either. I usually bring my bayswater, a shopping net, a bag like yours or a clutch.

Am I the only one who's already begun to plan the fall wardrobe? Even though Florence was HOT I were thinking of fall items all week, and have already bought a cardigan and a scarf for fall.

fall is what is shipping to stores right now....

Yeah I know. I just still think July is pretty early to start thinking about fall and winther clothing. Seems like the summer've just begun
