The Acne Thread

oh no no. my dermatologist told me you have to be on birth control for one month prior to starting accutane. the gyno gives me birth control, the derm gives me accutane. sorry more the misunderstanding

Ok.I undrestood that you said that guno would give you accutane, which is not true. But my advice is to go with birth control pills only. They will make your skin look much better, with no side effects, like accutane (liver demage). Try birth control pills for at least six or maybe 12 months, if it doesnt work, than go for accutane. it is the final solution. Accutane is mostly for boys. (trust me on this one)

try RETIN-A it's the bomb it smooths skin and acne disappear...it's magical. Also very good for wrinkles since it exfoliates skin.
I love RETIN-A:heart:

My doctor mentioned this as another alternative in case the antiobiotic doesn't work. Is there any way of getting this w/o a prescription?

Of course there is. I'm not sure if you can get it outside of the dermo's but since it's a lot less risky than say accutane you can get it without a prescription. My friend got tons of samples of the stuff when she visited hers and she gave me a few. Hope this helps.:flower:

^ Thank you. But I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it know because I just saw my primary doctor for a prescription, not a derm. I just can't walk into a store and buy it?

Nope and its very very expensive (even with good insurance I paid $50! without insurance it would have been $120 for ONE tube!)

I went to the dermatologist yesterday and he put me on Doxicycline and prescribed me Retin-A and Duac gel. We'll see how it goes!

I pay for RETIN-A 12€ circa and that's not much. At least in Italy this is the price for it. And yes you must have a prescription^_^

How can people just be put on Accutane for a few zits here and there? Isn't there a criteria that one must fill??

After my doctor described to me all the health risks associated with accutane, I decided against it. I think they make you sign a consent for saying in the event anything were to go wrong it's not their fault and you've agreed to it (scary). And even though I said I don't want children, I wouldn't want any birth defects in my child in the event I were to get pregnant and keep the baby.....scary stuff.

^^^ Good decision. Accutane is some really nasty stuff. Check out acne.org the regimen they have there has worked better than accutane for some people.

I already told you not to take accutane ,just the birth control pill, the effect will almost be the same, but with bcp you wont have dry skin, serious liver demage, (although you have to check your liver status) and bla.bla.The difference is how the two of them work. If you are interested ask me,I would help you with the advice, The reason that accutane is teratogen makes it more apropriate for boys, but there will be no effect on your child afer half a year of the last dose. Accutane doesnt destroy your reproductive system.

Im kinda tired of my skin situation now. I got back from my ski-hooliday last week. I had a lot of sun, so I was kinda tanned and my skin was really good. Then after a week at home, my skin is back to the normal bad condition. I got some spots om my left-cheek (some small spots that look really awful) my right-cheek is perfect. And I have also some old marks from spots on my neck under my cheekbone, that never want to disappear.

I get a feeling that my skin takes a year to make new cells.. Peeling might be a good solution for me. But everytime I have used a scrub my skin has been really bad. I usually use a Salicylwash 2%, but the problem is maybe that I overdo my skin. So now I only use Ole Henriksen Aloe Vera cleanser, Murad Perfect Skinloatin and Clarins loation.

What do you think I should do?

AHHHH!! NOO! STOP STOP STOP!

The very first time I went to get a facial I was speaking to the SA responsible for the products sold there and she stopped me when I said that I used scrub regularly(1-2 times a week). Most people think that using the scrub will help rid yourself of dead skin while at the same time getting rid of spots but she told me that in actuality it makes them a lot worse and a lot more permanet. :(

Here's what I wrote in the "Facial Scars" thread. It might not exactly pertain to you but I hope it helps somehow:

I'm using the same thing! Although expensive (for over the counter) I've been seeing some results. Every now and then when I break out I don't fear the zit/s themselves but the mark it leaves afterwards. =[ I've read though that it should be used for up to 8 weeks for maximum results and consistently over time after that.

My tips would be:

-Get used to getting some sort of peel (Glycolic Acid work wonders or Microdermabrasion) or use Neutrogena's Advanced Soultions acne mark fading peel
-Apply Vitamin E (as mentioned before) you can even find it in the form of a cream)
-Apply sufficent SPF. I've heard that not having protection against the sun is what aggravates most marks.

So if using harsh abrasive exfoliators is a bad thing, what should we use to exfoliate?

where can you just buy vitamin E? from the drugstore? does this help fade dark marks?

thanks for the help. even tho, I dont really have any scars and such from acne, my skin just seems to "work" very slow.

I used to worship Proactiv as well until I noticed that I would get the occasional breakout while using the system. Right now I'm using the Exposed system which has worked wonders, as well as the Neutrogena Advanced Acne Mark Fading Peel which is great. And I would also highly recommend any acne based Black Opal products for woman of color.

Oh, and of course drink tons of water and get some sleep!

Hey does anybody know what to do once you've popped a pimple? Are you supposed to put pimple cream on it, leave it alone or ice it??

Ive got this bacne and its making me go nuts. i have to constantly wear stuff to cover it up and it drives me nuts because i love wearing singlets and stuff due to HOT weather.
I've heard so many things to try, phisoderm and 2% BHA and there's this website www.howtogetridofacne.com which claims their guide is great but sounds kinda dodgy to me? has anyone used it before?
And can someone pleaseee recommend me a regime? Knowing me i'll just start trying a whole bunch of products which i know isnt good if it doesnt work together.
And where can i find this 2% BHA thing online?
Thanks so muchh u fashion spot forumers ;-) kisses!

i use lab series for men from sephora or high-end department stores its not too expensive and works amazingly, i have never been so pleased with a skincare product before...
